Chapter 153 The Secrets of the Death Forest
Chapter 153 The Secrets of the Death Forest
Kael: POV
Morning light spilled through the window, stirring me from sleep. I reached across the bed, finding emptiness where Lyra should have been. My eyes snapped open to see her fully dressed, securing supplies into a small pack. The determined set of her jaw told me everything.
"We need to find Aria," she said without looking up. "I can't stand thinking about what Valen might be doing to her."
I sat up, studying her face. Though we'd sealed three rifts yesterday, exhausting ourselves in the process, her eyes burned with fierce resolve. The shadows beneath them betrayed her lack of rest.
"Are you sure you're recovered enough?" I asked, already knowing her answer.
"I don't have the luxury of waiting." Her hands trembled slightly as she tightened the straps on her pack. "Would you wait if it was me? Aria's our friend, Kael—she's probably suffering in Valen's clutches right now. We have to get her out of Flamescale Domain before it's too late."
I was dressed in minutes. We needed to move quickly, but recklessly charging into Flamescale territory could get us killed—and wouldn't help Aria. Our best shot was a risky shortcut that could shave days off the journey.
Marcus and Thor were already awake when we found them. Thor's face darkened when we explained our plan to rescue Aria from Valen's stronghold.
"Flamescale borders are heavily guarded," he said, tracing a line on the map. "But there's a forest here, at the junction of all three territories. The 'Shadow Edge.' It's rarely patrolled—and traversing it will get us to Flamescale Domain much faster than the main roads. We could reach their outer territories by nightfall."
"Because it's fucking dangerous," Marcus added bluntly. "Scouts report increased void activity. But if we're serious about saving Aria quickly, this is the way—straight through the shadows to Valen's doorstep."
Lilian appeared with a leather pouch. "Take these healing potions. They're stronger than standard issue." Her eyes met mine. "Bring her back safely."
Before leaving, Altaris provided a rolled parchment. "A safe route to the border. The forest has changed recently—trees twisting, animals fleeing. Be careful. This path cuts right to Flamescale Domain; it's your fastest shot at reaching Aria."
The journey to Shadow Edge took three hours. As we ventured deeper, the air grew thick and oppressive. Trees contorted into unnatural shapes, their bark blackened and peeling. Purple-tinged leaves dangled like diseased flesh. Every step brought us closer to Aria, but the void's corruption raised doubts about our survival.
"This isn't natural," I muttered, helping Lyra over a fallen log crusted with violet fungus.
Nova circled above, then dove down. "I can feel abnormal energy waves ahead," she reported, perching on Lyra's shoulder. "Much stronger than regular void creatures. But if we push through, we'll hit Flamescale Domain by dusk—Aria's counting on us."
Stormbringer's presence surged in my mind, his agitation prickling beneath my skin. Something comes. Something twisted. We couldn't afford delays; Aria's life depended on speed.
My instincts flared. I pulled Lyra behind me just as the underbrush erupted. A massive creature burst into the clearing—a nightmarish fusion of wolf and lizard, three times larger than either should be. Its skin pulsed with purple energy, each breath releasing toxic void mist.
"What the fuck is that?" I snarled, summoning storm energy to my palms. We had to dispatch it quickly—every minute wasted kept us from Aria.
Lyra's voice came through our bond. Its energy pattern is strange. Not like anything we've encountered.
The creature charged with impossible speed. I threw up a storm barrier, only to watch its claws tear through it like paper. I barely dodged as those talons ripped past my shoulder, tearing my jacket.
"Normal attacks aren't working!" I shouted, rolling to my feet as the beast whirled for another charge.
Lyra's water elements swirled around her staff. "It's feeding on the void energy to heal itself," she called, observing the creature's slashed flank already knitting together.
I reached for Stormbringer's power, feeling electricity course through my veins. Lyra's water elements spiraled toward me, and I instinctively knew what to do.
"Together!" I shouted.
Our elements merged, creating a swirling blizzard of ice and lightning. Frozen spears struck the creature, stopping its advance. It howled unnaturally as frost spread across its corrupted flesh.
But it wasn't enough. The creature shook off the ice, void energy pulsing brighter.
Its core—we need to target its core! Stormbringer thundered in my mind.
I channeled deeper, drawing on ancient sealing techniques. Silver-blue runes appeared on my arms as Lyra's starlight joined my storm. The creature charged again, but we were ready.
Our combined attack struck its chest. For a moment, nothing happened—then it froze, purple energy swirling violently. With a wet, sickening sound, it collapsed into violet liquid.
Panting, I turned to Lyra. "Are you hurt?"
She shook her head, face pale. "Kael, I remember something. There's a major void rift deep in this forest—one linked to Valen's experiments. Sealing it might weaken his hold on Aria."
"Nova, what can you see from above?" I called.
The tiny dragon returned. "The trees are completely dead about a mile ahead, covered in purple. No wildlife. But beyond that, I spotted Flamescale patrols—this path is the fastest way."
We moved ahead, knowing sealing the rift could disrupt Valen's alliances and aid our rescue.
Deeper in, breathing grew harder. I created a small storm current for cleaner air and swept for life signs.
"No living presence nearby," I reported. "Strange for a rift this size. Maybe Valen's forces abandoned it to focus on Aria."
Lyra ran her staff along the ground. "No element detection devices either. Not Flamescale's style."
I crouched, examining disturbed soil. "Someone's been here—tracks maybe three days old, could be Valen's scouts."
Nova fluttered nervously. "It feels like an abandoned experiment site. This might explain how Valen's keeping Aria captive."
The void rift was in a natural cave, entrance surrounded by pulsing purple crystals. We entered cautiously, Lyra's staff glowing blue. Inside, the temperature dropped; purple energy veins crawled the walls like infected vessels.
"The energy here is more concentrated," Lyra whispered. "More purposeful. If Valen's behind this, sealing it could clear our path to Aria without alerting his forces."
Stormbringer's unease rippled through me. This was cultivated. Someone wanted it to grow—perhaps to power Valen's hold over Aria.
The cave opened into a circular chamber with a floating rift at center. Tables of equipment and carved rune arrays bore Flamescale insignias.
"Something's over there," I pointed to shadowy forms.
As we approached, my blood froze. Several figures in Flamescale uniforms stood motionless, skin rotting, eyes vacant.
"Star Goddess," Lyra gasped. "They're dead but moving. Valen must have experimented on his own people—this is what we're up against to save Aria."
The corpses turned, eyes flickering with void energy, shambling forward. I struck one with a storm chain; it flew against the wall but twisted back up, unharmed.
"They're absorbing void energy to regenerate!" I shouted as more emerged. We had to clear them fast to press on.
Lyra's starlight slowed them, but they recovered quickly. Soon, four surrounded us, attacks nearly useless.
I merged with Stormbringer, shifting to storm dragon form. With enhanced strength, I tore one apart—only to see pieces crawl back together, void energy as blood.
"We must attack the rift and them simultaneously," Lyra called, energy low. "It's the only way to weaken this place and get to Aria before Valen realizes."
One broke through, lunging for Lyra. I couldn't reach her.
She raised her staff, eyes desperate. The Tidesong Staff flared with blinding light, channeling pure purification energy.
The soldier froze, void dissipating, replaced by blue glow. Peace crossed its rotted features before it collapsed to ash.
The others turned, eyes fixed on the staff.
"Lyra—" I began, but she stepped forward, staff raised, determination set.
"I know what to do now," she whispered. "Once we seal this rift, nothing will stop us from reaching Flamescale Domain and rescuing Aria."
