Chapter 150 Destined Choices
Chapter 150 Destined Choices
Lyra: POV
The clearing fell silent. Valen's words hung in the air like poison, "Where is my soulbound? I need you."
I felt Aria stiffen beside me, her hands gripping her daggers so tightly her knuckles turned white.
Instinctively, I focused on the Tidesong Staff, channeling a thin stream of awareness through it. The void energy surrounding Valen was different from the contamination we'd been fighting. This wasn't random corruption—it was focused, concentrated, almost sentient in its purpose. Stella stirred within me, her agitation mirroring my own.
His void contamination is deliberate, she warned. Someone has taught him to harness it.
Valen's golden eyes swept across our ranks, searching, calculating. When his gaze landed on our side of the formation, his lips curved into a triumphant smile. I turned slightly and saw Aria's face had drained of color.
"Go to the back, we'll handle Valen and his men," I whispered urgently, trying to push her behind me.
It was too late. Their eyes had already connected across the clearing. The air between them seemed to vibrate with an invisible current—unmistakable to anyone who had experienced a soulbound connection. Aria was Valen's destined mate.
"No," Aria whispered, her voice trembling but determined. "I'm not going to run away anymore. This is my battle, Lyra."
Kael moved close to my side, his voice low. "Be ready to fight. This just got complicated." Altaris approached from the other side, his shadow mages spreading out in defensive positions.
Valen stepped forward, extending his hand toward our group. "Come, my destined one," he called, his voice silky but commanding. "You belong at my side."
I moved in front of Aria, raising the Tidesong Staff. The crystal emitted a warning pulse of blue-silver light. "She doesn't belong to anyone, especially not you."
Valen's laugh was cold. "How naive, Princess. A soulbound connection isn't something you can interfere with. It's written in dragon blood." His eyes fixed on Aria behind me. "You feel it too, don't you? The pull. The inevitability."
To my surprise, Aria stepped out from behind me. Her voice was quiet but steady. "I understand what a soulbound connection means. I also know it can be rejected."
Valen's face darkened. For a moment, something like genuine pain flickered across his features before hardening into cold fury. "Attack!" he commanded his soldiers. "Take the girl alive. Kill the rest."
Chaos erupted. Kael's storm barrier surged up around our group, deflecting the first wave of fire blasts. The Tidesong Staff in my hands resonated with his storm energy, strengthening our defenses. Altaris barked orders to his shadow mages who split to our flanks, while Captain Elaris and her Water Guardians formed a defensive perimeter.
I caught a glimpse of Aria's hands glowing with pure wind element—not the basic manipulation I'd seen her use before, but advanced control that spoke of years of training. Who was she, really?
Kael and I moved in perfect sync, my starlight purification weaving through his storm seals to create a net that caught and neutralized Valen's fiery attacks. Aria's wind blades sliced through enemy magic connections with surgical precision. Altaris and his shadow mages created disorienting visual distortions, breaking the enemy formation.
Suddenly, the void energy around Valen intensified. Purple energy coiled around his body like serpents, and his eyes gleamed with an unnatural light. Through the Tidesong Staff, I sensed him drawing energy from his own soldiers—their life force draining visibly as they staggered.
He's performing a forbidden dragon flame absorption! Stella's voice cut through my mind. It damages both caster and victims permanently!
Valen's flames transformed, shifting from normal red-gold to an eerie purple-black. The temperature around us spiked so dramatically that the air itself seemed to warp and distort.
With a roar, he released a blast that tore through Kael's barrier. Kael stumbled backward, clutching his shoulder where the corrupted flame had burned through his armor.
"Kael!" I rushed to heal him, diverting my energy from offense to healing.
Aria's face hardened with determination. She stepped forward, drawing Valen's attention away from us. Her wind element swirled around her with unprecedented power as she faced him directly.
When their elements clashed—her silver-blue wind against his purple-red fire—I saw something extraordinary. The faint outlines of their dragon souls materialized briefly behind them. Their elements didn't simply collide; they formed a strange resonance cycle.
Aria's expression shifted from determination to pain. Her blue eyes began flickering with the same purple light as Valen's. Whatever connection they shared, he was using it to influence her.
"Aria, break away!" I shouted, struggling to maintain my healing flow to Kael.
Altaris seized the moment of Valen's distraction. "Shadow squad, flanking assault now!" His troops surged from the sides, breaking through the enemy line.
"We need to retreat," Kael urged, his voice strained from pain despite my healing. "The rift is still our primary objective."
I created a water mist screen while Altaris's shadow magic enhanced our concealment. As we began withdrawing, Aria suddenly wrenched herself free from the energy connection with Valen.
"Go! Complete the mission!" she shouted toward us. "I'll draw them away! I'll catch up with you later."
"No!" I tried to move toward her, but Kael caught my arm.
"She's made her choice," he said firmly. "This is a battlefield decision we must respect."
Through the swirling mist and chaos, I caught one last glimpse of Aria creating a massive wind element barrier while simultaneously leading Valen and part of his forces in the opposite direction.
Then Kael pulled me onto our carriage, and we were moving rapidly away, the sounds of battle fading behind us. I'd lost sight of Aria completely.
During our retreat, I couldn't stop looking back, insisting we stop to search for her. Kael remained adamant that we continue toward the rift.
"There are pursuers," Thor reported, "but not many. It seems the main force was drawn in another direction."
By evening, we reached our temporary camp at the forest's edge. Everyone was exhausted, faces grim with the day's events.
Marcus approached, his expression solemn. "All squad members accounted for... except Aria."
Did Valen take her? The question hung unspoken in the air between us.
