Chapter 149 Preparations at Dawn

Chapter 149 Preparations at Dawn
Lyra: POV

We gathered around a large map spread across a sturdy table in the palace's war room. Kael pointed to the three void rifts we had identified, forming a triangular pattern around the Water Temple.

"If these three rifts fully connect," he explained, "they'll create a triangular array that could tear open a much larger spatial breach."

Nova flew down to perch on my shoulder, her tiny voice urgent in my mind. The rifts have grown by approximately 30% in the last twelve hours. The spread is accelerating faster than our previous calculations.

I relayed this information to the group, watching their expressions grow more serious.

"We can't afford to wait," I said. "If Nova's observations are correct, we have less time than we thought."

Aria spoke up, her voice uncharacteristically tense. "My wind-ears have picked up something else. Lord Cassius's scouts are also searching for these rifts. We need to reach them before they do."

I placed my hand on the Tidesong Staff, feeling its power hum beneath my fingers. "The staff can amplify our sealing abilities, but it works best when combined with Kael's storm element."

Marcus studied the map with a tactical eye. "If all three rifts fully connect, the void creatures we encountered before will be nothing compared to what might come through."

After further discussion, we decided to tackle the rifts one by one, starting with the largest one to the northwest, then moving clockwise to the others.

The gentle dawn light spilled across Shadow Valley's courtyard as our combined forces assembled for departure. I stood beside Kael, watching as soldiers from both territories organized their supplies and checked their equipment one final time.

Captain Elaris approached with her Water Guardians, their blue-silver armor gleaming in the morning light. "Lady Lyra, we're ready to move out on your command."

Prince Altaris emerged from the palace with his shadow forces, their dark purple armor seeming to absorb the early sunlight. Behind them, King Thalarian appeared on the palace steps, his expression stern as he surveyed the assembled troops.

"Bring honor to Shadow Valley," the king called out to his son, deliberately avoiding eye contact with me or any of the Star Crystal forces.

I climbed into the specially designed star-light carriage, pulled by four shadow drakes whose scales shimmered with an iridescent purple-black sheen. Kael took his place beside me, while our combined forces formed a protective formation around us.

With a signal from Kael, our procession began to move toward the palace gates and beyond, into the dangerous territory where the void rifts waited.

As our caravan traveled through the forested hills, I found myself deep in conversation with Stella, my dragon soul.

What does it truly mean to be Star-Chosen? I asked. Is my only purpose to seal void rifts?

Your destiny is greater than mere sealing, Stella replied. The rifts are symptoms of a deeper imbalance. As Star-Chosen, you must address the cause, not just the effects.

Kael noticed my distracted expression. "Dragon soul conversation?" he asked with a knowing smile.

I nodded. "Stella says there's something deeper behind these rifts. We're not just dealing with random tears in reality."

As we progressed, disturbing signs became apparent along the roadside—vegetation with severe purple streaks, as if the void contamination was spreading faster than anticipated. Even the air felt heavier, charged with an unnatural energy.

Aria rode up alongside our carriage, her expression troubled. "The wildlife ahead is behaving strangely. Birds flying in erratic patterns, deer with purple-tinged eyes. The void influence is spreading to living creatures."

We had been traveling for several hours when Nova suddenly darted back from her forward position, circling urgently above our carriage.

Unwelcome company ahead, her mental voice warned. Armed soldiers in the clearing, wearing flame insignias.

I signaled for the caravan to halt. "Nova says there are Flamescale Domain soldiers ahead," I told Kael and Altaris, who had ridden up beside us.

Kael immediately raised his hand, alerting our forces. He and Altaris dispatched scouts to advance stealthily through the trees for reconnaissance.

When the scouts returned, their report confirmed our suspicions: a contingent of Flamescale soldiers waited in the forest clearing ahead, their banners bearing Prince Valen's personal crest.

I noticed Aria's face had gone pale, her hand unconsciously gripping her reins tighter. Her reaction seemed disproportionate to the general danger—there was something more personal in her fear.

"We don't change course," I decided after consulting with Kael and Altaris. "We face this encounter directly."

Our procession continued forward into the wider clearing. There, blocking the road, Prince Valen waited with approximately twenty Flamescale soldiers. He was dressed in formal royal attire, his red-gold hair gleaming in the filtered sunlight. His smile appeared pleasant, but his golden eyes remained cold and calculating.

I felt Kael's storm element surging beside me, ready to protect me at the slightest provocation. Behind us, our combined forces had quietly arranged themselves in defensive positions.

My fingers tightened around the Tidesong Staff, which emitted a faint warning glow in Valen's presence. The staff's reaction confirmed my instincts—this prince was dangerous.

Valen's gaze swept over our company, lingering briefly on me before moving past, searching for something—or someone. His smile widened as his eyes found their target somewhere in our ranks.

"Where is my soulbound?" he called out, his voice smooth and commanding, carrying clearly across the clearing. "I need you."

The words sent a chill through our entire company, and I realized this encounter was about to become far more complicated than a simple territorial dispute.
