Chapter 111 Close Calls and New Resolve

Chapter 111 Close Calls and New Resolve
Lyra: POV

We discussed the limited information we'd gained from Arden, trying to piece together Cassius's complete plan. The knowledge that I was specifically needed for the ritual explained much of their persistence in hunting me.

"The Void Lord needs a powerful energy conduit," Stella reminded me. "This explains why both Valen and Cassius have been so fixated on capturing you rather than simply killing you."

The next morning, we maintained our merchant disguises as planned, setting up our stall in the marketplace. Despite my best efforts to focus on the task at hand, my thoughts kept drifting to Arden locked in the shed back at Storm's Eye.

"Your mind is elsewhere," Aria whispered, arranging herbs with practiced efficiency. "I understand your concern, but we need to stay alert."

"I know," I sighed, forcing myself to concentrate on the fabrics I was organizing. "It's just..."

My words trailed off as a chill ran down my spine. Nova, who had been napping peacefully inside my collar, suddenly stirred awake. She poked her tiny head out, trembling slightly against my skin, sending me clear warning signals through our bond.

Looking up, I saw what had triggered her alarm. A squad of fully armed soldiers had entered the marketplace from the northern entrance, their armor gleaming in the morning sun. My heartbeat quickened as I recognized the crimson insignia of Emberscale's elite guard on their breastplates.

"Kael," I murmured, just loud enough for him to hear at the other end of our stall.

He nodded almost imperceptibly, having already noticed the threat. The soldiers began methodically moving through the market, stopping at each stall. One of them—clearly the leader—was holding several parchments that I instantly recognized as wanted posters.

The squad leader's voice boomed across the marketplace: "Attention, citizens! Recent energy signatures indicate the presence of wanted fugitives in this area." He held up the sketches, and even from a distance, I could make out rough drawings of our faces. "Anyone harboring information about these traitors and failing to report will be charged with treason!"

As the soldiers drew closer to our stall, I lowered my head, pretending to be deeply engaged in rearranging our merchandise.

"Act natural," I whispered to myself, feeling sweat beading on my forehead despite the cool morning air.

When the soldiers finally reached us, Kael stepped forward with casual confidence that I could only envy. He examined the wanted posters with apparent interest, as if he were merely a curious merchant.

"What did these folks do?" he asked conversationally, his accent perfectly matching the local dialect. "Look pretty ordinary to me."

The soldier gave our stall a cursory glance, his eyes briefly passing over me as I kept my face partially hidden behind a stack of fabrics. "Dangerous rebels," he replied gruffly. "Enemies of the realm."

I held my breath as the soldier's gaze lingered on our merchandise, praying that Nova would remain hidden and still.

"Have you seen any of these people in the area?" the soldier asked, addressing not just us but the cluster of villagers who had gathered nearby.

To my surprise and relief, the villagers shook their heads emphatically. One elderly woman even remarked, "Like that pretty girl there? Trust me, soldier, we'd remember if someone looking like her passed through our little market."

The soldier nodded, seemingly satisfied, and moved on to the next stall. I remained frozen, afraid to move until they were well away from us.

When the soldiers finally left the marketplace, we didn't immediately relax. We continued our merchant charade for another hour to avoid suspicion, then carefully packed up our stall earlier than usual.

"We should return to Storm's Eye," Marcus suggested quietly as we walked through the village streets. "This was likely just the first search party. The fact that they detected energy signatures means they have new tracking methods."

"That's concerning," I replied, keeping my voice low. "If they can track void energy or my starlight..."

"Then we're no longer as hidden as we thought," Kael finished grimly.

We approached our safe house with extra caution, checking for signs of disturbance. To our relief, everything appeared untouched. Thor greeted us at the door, confirming no one had approached during our absence.

"How's our guest?" I asked, referring to Arden.

"Quiet," Thor replied. "Almost too quiet. I checked on him twice—he seemed completely unaware of what was happening in the village."

After securing the house, we gathered around the wooden table in the main room as evening approached. Marcus laid out rough sketches of patrol routes he'd observed, while Aria reported snippets of conversation she'd overheard at the market.

"They're increasing patrols on all major roads," she explained, her expression grim. "And they mentioned something about 'energy detectors' being distributed to squad leaders."

Thor's massive fist came down on the table, making the cups jump. "We should relocate. Find somewhere more remote, away from these patrols."

"And risk being spotted during travel?" Aria countered. "We'd be exposed on the open road."

I listened to their debate, a new resolution forming in my mind. After months of hiding and reacting, perhaps it was time for a different approach.

As night fell, I climbed to the roof of our safe house, staring at the bright moon hanging in the sky. The day's close call weighed heavily on my mind.

Kael joined me a few minutes later, offering a steaming cup of tea. "You know," he said quietly, "we almost got caught today."

I nodded, taking the cup. "We can't keep living like this, constantly reacting. The Triple Moon draws closer each day. We need to take action."

Kael's gaze drifted to the dark forest where the void rift lay hidden. "Are you thinking what I'm thinking?"

"The void rift," I whispered in response. "If we could find a way to seal it, or at least slow its expansion..."

We began discussing how we might approach that dangerous source. Kael suggested combining his storm sealing abilities with my purification powers.

"We've already proven it works," I said, remembering our fight against the void bear. "Our powers together create something... different. Something stronger."

Marcus asked, "Isn't there some risk in doing it this way?"
