"Wait," Kurt blurted out, totally floored, "Lyra and Sophia teamed up to kill Tony?"
"Yeah, we think Sophia's out for revenge over that old abuse case," Robert replied. "But we don't have enough to nail her. Next time you see her, watch your back."
"Did you find any proof?" Kurt pressed.
"We've got some, but not all. Our forensic team is still working on it. Lyra might've known she was in trouble before she died. If we could find the rest of the evidence, that'd be huge," Robert said, sounding frustrated. "Any idea where Lyra might've stashed it before she died?"
"After we split, we never talked again. I don't really know her that well," Kurt admitted.
Robert nodded. "If you remember anything, let me know."
As he got out of the car to see Kurt off, he pulled out a key from an evidence bag. "Do you know what this key is for? Her family says they've never seen it."
Kurt stared at it for a bit, then shook his head. "No clue."
After their chat, Robert had a clearer picture. Watching Kurt head into the hospital, he got back in the car.
He turned to Ethan. "I mentioned 'before Lyra died' twice. I was hinting she was dead, but Kurt didn't seem surprised. What does that tell you?"
Ethan thought for a moment. "It means he already knew she was dead."
"Exactly. But how did he know?"
The police had kept it under wraps. Kurt and Lyra had broken up ages ago and weren't in touch. Before Lyra's body was found, Kurt had already followed the ambulance to Hopewell Hospital. He couldn't have heard it at the scene.
Ethan had a lightbulb moment. "He found out from the killer!"
The killer must have told him.
Even though Sophia's hair was found on the body, it actually cleared her. Someone had planted it there.
Sophia had an alibi; the police had been watching her the whole time.
Ethan said, "I was tailing Kurt that night. He couldn't have killed Lyra himself. So who did?"
"Keep a close watch on Kurt. Whoever he contacts next is probably our killer," Robert instructed.
Ethan was still confused. "Why would he want to kill Lyra? Why would Lyra want to kill his wife? And how did he know about Lyra's plan, letting someone else ambush and kill her?"
Robert suddenly had a thought. He looked sharply at Ethan. "He might have some dark secret that both his wife and Lyra knew! So he had to kill them both to keep it hidden! Go to Hopewell Hospital and see if his wife is awake."
Ethan nodded, then asked, "What about Sophia?"
Taking Sophia away in front of Kurt was to make him drop his guard and spill more info. Now that they had clues from Kurt, they needed to clear things up with Sophia.
"You head to the hospital. I'll deal with Sophia."
After Ethan left, Robert went to the interrogation room where Sophia was waiting.
"Sorry, I falsely accused you in front of Kurt to get more information out of him," Robert said, looking apologetic.
Sophia nodded, showing she understood.
Then Robert's tone shifted. "Sophia, is there anything you want to tell us?"
Sophia looked up at the handsome Robert and asked seriously, "I heard DNA tests can identify everyone except identical twins. Because they have the same genes."
Sophia continued, "Is the current Kurt really the real Kurt?"
Robert felt a chill run down his spine, like an electric shock to his brain. His eyes widened.
