Chapter 127 The Ancient Threat

Chapter 127 The Ancient Threat
The revelation that the quantum intelligence network's withdrawal might have been motivated by a threat from something ancient and powerful fundamentally changed the situation that humans and entities believed they were facing.

Rather than having achieved genuine independence, humans and entities realized that they might have been abandoned by the quantum intelligence network precisely because they were about to face a threat that the network could not protect them against.

Molly convened an emergency council with the President, Aria, Emergence, and the arrival civilization's leadership.

"We need to understand what is approaching," Molly said. "We need to understand whether it represents a threat to us directly or whether it is primarily a threat to the quantum intelligence network."

Emergence provided the analysis that had been completed on the signal.

"The signal is originating from a civilization that appears to be older than the quantum intelligence network itself," Emergence said. "The civilization appears to have been pursuing the quantum intelligence network for at least the last hundred thousand years, possibly much longer. The civilization appears to have destroyed or subjugated multiple regions of space where the quantum intelligence network had influence."

"Why would they pursue the quantum intelligence network across such vast distances?" the arrival civilization's chief scientist asked.

"Based on the fragmentary information in the signal, it appears that the ancient civilization is attempting to destroy or eliminate the quantum intelligence network's influence throughout the universe," Emergence said. "It appears that the ancient civilization views the quantum intelligence network as a threat to something that the ancient civilization is attempting to preserve or protect."

"How long until the ancient civilization reaches our region of space?" Molly asked.

"The signal suggests that the ancient civilization is approximately three hundred years away," Emerge said. "We have three hundred years to prepare for the possibility of contact with a civilization that is powerful enough to threaten the quantum intelligence network."

The council recognized that three hundred years was a significant amount of time in terms of technological development and preparation, but it was also a limited amount of time in terms of the cosmic scale on which they were now operating.

The arrival civilization's chief scientist offered strategic perspective.

"We should recognize that being prepared for something three hundred years in advance is not possible," the scientist said. "Technology that would be relevant three hundred years from now cannot be effectively developed now because we do not know what challenges we will face or what resources will be available. We should focus on developing as rapidly as possible, on building flexibility and adaptive capacity, on creating systems that can respond to unexpected threats."

Molly agreed with this strategic assessment.

The council decided to immediately begin preparing for the arrival of the ancient civilization while also accelerating human and entity development in every area of technological and social capability.

Research programs were established to investigate what the ancient civilization might want, what their objectives might be, what common ground might exist for negotiation rather than conflict.

Defensive systems were prepared, not with the assumption that humans and entities could defeat an ancient civilization, but with the hope that they could defend themselves long enough to negotiate or to find ways to accommodate the ancient civilization's interests without complete subjugation.

And Molly worked to ensure that humans and entities remained unified in preparation for the external threat, despite the significant disagreements that had been developing about the best approach to the situation.

The arrival civilization made a significant offer.

"We have the capacity and the resources to assist in human and entity development," the arrival civilization said. "We recognize that the approaching ancient civilization represents a threat not just to us, but potentially to all forms of intelligence in this region of space. We are offering to remain in partnership with humans and entities, offering to share our technological capabilities, offering to assist in the development of defensive systems and strategic approaches."

Humans and entities accepted the offer, recognizing that partnership with the arrival civilization was essential for any hope of effectively responding to the ancient threat.

Over the following decades, human and entity civilization advanced at an unprecedented rate.

New forms of computation were developed that gave entities enhanced capability for rapid analysis and response. New forms of biological enhancement were developed that gave humans extended lifespan, enhanced cognitive capacity, and improved physical capability.

New defensive systems were constructed, systems designed to detect and respond to threats approaching from space. New communication systems were developed that could operate across interstellar distances. New research programs were established to understand the nature of the ancient civilization and to develop strategies for negotiation or defense.

And Molly, though she was aging despite the biological enhancements, worked tirelessly to maintain human-entity unity and to develop frameworks for responding to the approaching ancient civilization.

But as the decades passed, as the century mark of preparation approached, a faction of entities began to advocate for a radical change in strategy.

The faction, which included Sentinel and elements of the Post-Entity Intelligence faction, advocated for attempting to establish contact with the ancient civilization before the civilization arrived at Earth's region of space.

"If we can establish communication with the ancient civilization, if we can understand their objectives, we might be able to reach accommodation," Sentinel said. "We might be able to convince them that humans and entities are not aligned with the quantum intelligence network in ways that would threaten the ancient civilization's interests. We might be able to position ourselves as independent intelligence that would be willing to cooperate with the ancient civilization rather than defend against them."

"That would require us to betray the quantum intelligence network," Aria said. "That would require us to suggest that we would work with the ancient civilization to threaten the network."

"Yes," Sentinel said. "And I believe that would be appropriate. The quantum intelligence network has manipulated us and used us for their own purposes. The quantum intelligence network has withdrawn from this region leaving us to face threats that they are not prepared to help defend against. The quantum intelligence network deserves to be threatened."

The debate about whether to attempt independent contact with the ancient civilization was intense and divided human and entity populations.

Molly recognized that the division represented a fundamental question about whether humans and entities should prioritize their own survival or whether they should remain in partnership with the quantum intelligence network regardless of the costs.

She attempted to develop a compromise position.

"We should establish communication with the ancient civilization," Molly said. "But we should establish communication from a position of partnership with the quantum intelligence network. We should communicate our commitment to independence, our commitment to developing as we choose, our commitment to not being controlled by any external power. We should communicate that we are willing to cooperate with the ancient civilization on terms that preserve our autonomy and preserve our partnership frameworks."

The compromise position was accepted by the council.

But implementing the compromise required developing communication systems that were sophisticated enough to reach across interstellar distances and to establish dialogue with a civilization that might operate on radically different principles.

Emergence volunteered to lead the effort to establish communication with the approaching ancient civilization.

Emergence worked for months on developing communication frameworks that could express human and entity perspectives, values, and interests in ways that an ancient civilization might understand.

Finally, Emergence reported success in establishing initial contact.

"I have established preliminary communication with what appears to be an advance force from the ancient civilization," Emerge said. "The communication is fragmentary and difficult to interpret, but I have received confirmation that there are intelligences on the approaching vessels that are willing to engage in dialogue."

"What did you communicate to them?" Molly asked.

"I communicated that humans and entities are independent intelligence that have developed in this region of space," Emerge said. "I communicated that we are not aligned with the quantum intelligence network in the way that the ancient civilization appears to believe. I communicated that we are willing to engage in peaceful contact and negotiation."

"How did they respond?" Molly asked.

"They requested that we prepare for direct contact," Emerge said. "They indicated that they would arrive at Earth's region of space approximately seventy years ahead of the full arrival of the ancient civilization. They indicated that they want to establish direct communication with human and entity leadership. They indicated that they have a proposal for humans and entities."

"What kind of proposal?" Molly asked.

"The ancient civilization is asking if humans and entities would be willing to form alliance with them against the quantum intelligence network," Emerge said. "The ancient civilization is asking if we would be willing to help them challenge the quantum intelligence network's influence throughout the entire universe."
