Beneath the Surface
The sun hung high over the forest, spilling yellow light through the tall pines. Emily stood in front of the cave entrance, the remnants of her transformation still tingling in her limbs. As she slipped on her worn T-shirt and jeans, she marveled at the strange blend of sensations, the feeling of fabric against her skin felt both foreign and comforting. As she slid into her long coat, memories of her recent hunt coursed through her mind like a warm tide.
She took a deep breath, the crisp air filling her lungs, and called out into the stillness, “How did I do?” Her voice echoed in the vastness, light, and full of hope.
Immediately, she heard something rustling in the underbrush. Pushing through the shadows, an enormous grey wolf stepped into the clearing, its fur shimmering like moonlight on water. Emily’s heart raced; this was no ordinary wolf. This was Alaric, the majestic alpha of the pack, who had watched over her since her first transformation.
“Good,” he growled, his deep voice reverberating through the forest. “How was your first hunt?”
Emily glanced down at her pregnant stomach, where the satisfaction of her recent meal simmered. It was a feeling unlike any she had experienced as a human primal rush of instincts fulfilled. “It was exhilarating,” she replied, her eyes sparkling with wonder. The two locked eyes in profound silence as the forest around them became a spectator of the electric connection they shared. She felt the weight of Alaric’s gaze, heavy with ancient wisdom yet filled with something more—a kind of understanding that transcended words.
After what felt like an eternity, Alaric broke the silence. “Go. Your time has not come.” His tone was firm yet soft, layered with a meaning Emily couldn’t grasp. “What do you mean, my time’?” she asked, her voice trembling with both confusion and urgency. “What’s going to happen?” Alaric stepped closer, his massive form casting a shadow over her. He reached up, delicately grazing his claw along her cheek gesture both tender and fierce. “You will see, my love,” he whispered, before bolting back into the woods with a swiftness that made her heart skip a beat.
Stunned and filled with questions, Emily watched him disappear into the forest. A mix of emotions swirled within her: confusion, excitement, curiosity. The connection she felt with him was undeniable as if he had awakened something deep within her she didn’t know existed.
With a reluctant sigh, she began her journey back to the town that felt like home. And the man she was sure she loved, yet as she walked, the shadows of the forest surrounded her like an embrace, the trees whispering secrets that only a few could hear. She replayed Alaric’s words in her mind, trying to extract their meaning.
What was her “time”? What destiny lay ahead?
The last remnants of the hunt still pulled in her veins, invigorating her spirit. She felt different, more alive, more aware. The forest had changed her, but so had the bond forged between her and Lucas.
When she finally reached the outskirts of the town, the familiar houses loomed like silent sentinels. The laughter of her people echoed from the great fire, but she felt worlds apart from it all. The day had gifted her with an understanding, a glimpse of life intertwined with the wild and untamed beauty of the forest.
As she walked along the street, she felt a familiar presence and turned to see Lucas approaching her. There was something desperate in the way he moved, a longing etched on his face. When their eyes met, time seemed to slow. He reached out, closing the distance between them, and pressed his lips against hers—a surprised greeting that stirred a thousand unspoken words, Lucas noticed a strange odor coming from Emily. She stiffened, her heart racing not from excitement but dread.
“Lucas,” she whispered, her gaze drifting as if searching for something distant. “The grey wolves got him. I watched them... I watched them kill him.” The tears brimmed in her eyes, and she felt herself crumbling under the weight of her confession. As if she were a marionette with strings pulled taut, Emily fell into Lucas’s arms and sobbed. “I’m a coward. I’m so sorry.” Each word spilled from her lips like a jagged stone, sharp and painful.
“It’s okay,” Lucas replied softly, his voice steady as he held her close. “It isn’t your fault. It’s his.” But beneath his soothing words, he felt a ripple of hesitation in her voice, a lingering fear he couldn’t quite decipher. There was something about the way she smelled that made him want her badly, Lucas just couldn’t figure it out. “Please, can we just go inside? I’m freezing,” Emily said, pulling out of his embrace as if she were suddenly conscious of their closeness, of the fire brewing between them. He nodded, sensing the urgency in her tone, and led her to the small cabin they had once called the honeymooner.
Inside, the air was warmer, but Emily still shivered—whether from cold or fear, he couldn’t tell. Lucas’s heart raced; he was so happy to see her, to be near her again. In a rush of affection, he touched her gently, his fingers skimming over her waist before resting on her bottom, drawing her closer. But Emily flinched, a flicker of panic crossing her features that made something deep within him stir uneasily.
“Lucas,” she said, distress creeping into her voice. “I can’t. The baby… it’s hurting.” Laying a protective hand over her stomach, she sought away from his touch, retreating to the bed, her expression a mix of yearning and fear. The sweet scent coming from her, the warmth radiating from her, pulled him in like a moth to a flame. He could feel the weight of her fear, the lingering shadows that wrapped around her heart. But underneath it all, he sensed a flicker of desire, a longing that mirrored his own. She shivered again, this time from sensation rather than cold, and he felt her pulse quicken beneath his lips. “Lucas—” she began, her voice trembling. “I don’t want you to see me like this… not after everything.”
“After everything is why I want you more,” he murmured, his breath warm against her skin. “You’re a survivor. You’re my savior. Let me remind you of who you are.” The tension hung in the air, thick and electric. Lucas felt her body responding, inching closer as if the universe conspired to bring them together once more, to mend the fractures of their reality. He kissed the curve of her belly, feeling the gentle rise and fall of her breaths, and at that moment, the walls around their hearts began to crumble.
“Just let me in,” he whispered his voice a soft plea against her wound-down defenses.
And for the first time since she entered the town, Emily let go of a breath she didn’t know she was holding. In that shared silence, they began to heal—together, despite the shadows that loomed outside their door.
