The Beast Within Us
The fire crackled in the chill of the evening, casting warm light on the gathering of townsfolk who had come together to share stories and camaraderie. Emily sat close to Lucas, a sense of comfort rooted in their shared laughter, but a lingering chill crawled up her spine as whispers of beast sightings surged among the crowd. "Emily," she heard Father John say with a warm smile, "do you know how the Cabin of the Honeymooners got its name?"
"Not quite," she replied, her curiosity piqued as the preacher leaned forward, his voice melodic yet tinged with foreboding. “The cabin was built by a couple who sought refuge in our town. The night after their wedding, tragedy struck.” Before he could finish, the Governor interrupted. “Now, now, Father, no need for ghost stories, especially to scare Ms. Emily! She will be resting alone in that cabin. Emily felt a rush of fear with the chilling implications woven into his words. What had happened to the couple? The questions buzzed in her mind, echoing like the first drops of rain on a quiet lake. Lucas, sensing her shift in mood, tapped her on the shoulder.
“Do not worry so much, Em. You scared off a beast last night, remember? I thought I was a goner!” He laughed, trying to lighten the thickening tension. But as fear began to cloud her thoughts, Emily turned her gaze toward Gizmo, her new companion sensitive to the unseen, and now he sniffed the air before trotting away from the fire, heading towards the fields. Attentive, she watched as he began to bark and snarl, his entire posture radiating distress. The gathered crowd quieted, attention shifting to the dog now standing sentinel against something unseen.
“Gregory, get your gun!” the Governor commanded, his voice echoing through the dimming light. Emily’s heart raced as the world around her darkened unnaturally. The full sun was fading behind an enormous bank of clouds, casting ominous shadows over the town. “Why is it so dark?” she asked aloud, her voice trembling. “Go to your cabin! Now, run!” Lucas shouted, urgency lacing his demand.
As Emily stood, her heart pounding, a guttural snarl erupted from the tree line, sending a wave of icy terror coursing through her. She spun around, the air heavy with dread. It pounced a beast of nightmares, tall and imposing, its grotesque form moving with unnatural speed toward Gizmo. The brave dog stood firm, but the creature swiped him aside as if he were a mere toy. Frozen in her place, Emily watched as chaos erupted around the fire. Men sprang to action. Women screamed and sprinted for safety, their voices blending with the chilling howl of the beast that filled the dusk air. Gregory pulled the trigger, the gunshot ringing out like thunder, but the creature barely hesitated. Fear clutched her throat as the beast continued its advance, eyes glowing like embers fixed on her.
It leaped onto a farmer, a stranger to her no longer. She could only watch in horror as it slashed at him with terrifying precision, blood splattering and soaking the earth. The head severed and tossed aside with unnatural ease, rolling toward her like a warning. Emily finally reacted, a primal scream escaping her lips, echoing amidst the chaos. Lucas’s voice cut through her panic, urging her to run. “Emily! Go! Now!”
She did not hesitate this time, her body moving on instinct as she sprinted toward her cabin. Behind her, she sensed Lucas charging to protect her, pushing through the air like a phoenix igniting to life. She glimpsed back as he speared the beast, their bodies colliding and sending them both flying — the picture burned into her mind. Emily heard the shrieks of two beasts tangled together like the sound of thunder clashing with the earth. Emily made it to the threshold of her cabin and grabbed the large door, and was in motion to shut it when Lucas jumped threw the threshold. Without any hesitation, she shut the door and slid the large board into the brackets fortifying the door.
Lucas quickly assumed a defensive stance, bracing against the door as the creature hurled itself against it again and again. Emily fell to the ground, pulling herself into his legs, her body trembling with fear and adrenaline. “It got you, Lucas! It almost took us!” she sobbed, the reality of the evening flooding back in waves of emotion. “I’m here, Emily, I’m here,” he whispered, his voice steady as he fell to the floor and held her close. Outside, chaos reigned, but in that moment, sheltered by love and the fragile walls of their cabin, Emily found a flicker of hope amid the terror. The beast had brought them together, and now, together, they must confront the darkness that had invaded their home.
"Did you see it? It Ripped his head off Lucas! That beast tore him to pieces!" She cried out, her voice choked with sorrow, the memory of blood and screams seared into her mind. Tears streamed down her cheeks, mixing with the dampness of her skin, flowing like the day she buried her father.
"Why are they doing this? I do not understand!" The world outside seemed to grow louder, the growl of the beast reverberating against the walls, and with it, the chaotic symphony of a world gone mad. Lucas, who had been watching her with a mix of concern and determination, pulled her closer. pulling her into his chest, enveloping her in warmth and protection as she sobbed quietly. His fingers wove through her hair, a soothing motion against the raging storm of her grief. He placed gentle kisses on the top of her head, whispering soft words of comfort that barely penetrated the overwhelming haze of her fear.
“Hush now, Emily. Just breathe,” he murmured softly, though he knew how futile his words felt against the sheer terror outside. They could hear the beast throwing itself against the cabin walls, each impact stronger than the last, shaking it to its very core. “Will it get in?” Her voice trembled, the fear glistening in her wide, watery eyes. She pressed herself harder against him, searching for safety in his solid presence, yet her mind raced with horrific images.
“If it does, I’ll kill it,” Lucas said, his voice low and steady, though doubt whispered at the edges of his bravado. He clenched his jaw, trying to project confidence he was far from feeling. Emily pulled back slightly, searching for his gaze for the truth in his words. “Did you just see what it did?” she whispered, tears spilling freely now, her voice crackling with despair. “Can you really think you’re capable of killing that beast?” His heart ached at the fragility of her hopes, but he could not let her see his doubt. Instead, he nodded, his resolve hardening. “I will find a way. You must believe me.”
“Gizmo…” she gasped, a new wave of panic flooding her veins. “He is out there. We must help him!” “Emily just, stay here!” Lucas barked, but she had already torn herself away from him, driven by an instinct that turned her fear into frantic energy. She rushed toward the door, the sound of the beast crashing against the walls only spurring her on. “Emily!” Lucas shouted, panic rising in his chest as he rushed after her.
But she was already yanking the door open, the frigid air rushing in like a beast itself, threatening to swallow her whole. Outside, she could see shadows moving among the trees, and hear the rustle of underbrush as chaos reigned beyond their heaven. “Gizmo!” she screamed into the darkness, her heart pounding, each beat an echo of her desperation.
“Emily, no!” Lucas lunged forward yelling “I will go stay here” and Lucas ran out of the cabin pulling the door shut behind himself, Emily dropped behind the door sobbing “now I’ve lost him too” Emily uttered from her sweet warm lips.
The cabin was suffocating in its silence after the chaos of growls and yelps had faded into the distance. Emily huddled against the door, tears streaming freely down her cheeks. The chill in the air was nothing compared to the icy grip of fear that held her heart. She can hear them—two beasts, terrifying and primal, the sounds of their struggle mingling with her frantic thoughts. She squeezed her eyes shut, the memory of Lucas's laughter echoing in her mind, contrasting sharply with the horrific sounds that had just filled the night. The growls and whimpers of the beasts as they rolled away, the sense of loss that gnawed at her insides choked her with sorrow. It was too late. It had taken him; she was certain of it. Alone in the dark cabin, she felt both the weight of despair and the suffocating solitude of abandonment.
Then, just as her spiraling panic reached its peak, she heard it—Lucas's scream, piercing through the night like a beacon of hope. "Open up!" he shouted, desperation lacing his voice. Emily's heart surged, heart pounding fiercely against her ribcage, and she leaped to her feet. Frantically, she swung open the door, her vision blurring with tears. Lucas stumbled through the threshold, disheveled and breathless, Gizmo barking wildly at their back. The adrenaline coursed through her veins as she quickly secured the wooden board into the brackets, locking the door tight, her fingers trembling.
Turning around, her relief quickly morphed into horror. Lucas stood with his back to her, facing the wall, panting heavily. The flickering light from the lantern illuminated the jagged claw mark that stretched across his back, deep and refusing to fade into the shadows. The sight of it made a bile rise in her throat. As she bandaged the wound, the weight of the night bore down upon them. “What did you see?” she asked quietly, almost afraid of his reply. Emily’s heart sank deeper. She thought of how close he had come to being caught, the horror of it clawing at her heart in a unique way than the wound on his back. “We’ll figure this out together,” she promised, setting the torn cloth down once she had finished. Together, they were a fortress against the darkness, and no beast would take Lucas from her. They were going to face the night head-on, and whether they lived or died, they would do so together.
