Chapter 49
Chapter 49
Charlotte picked up her phone and took a picture of her food. She sent it to Melvin, telling him that Bella had made her something to eat and that she was able to eat it.
Melvin replied with a happy emoji and also told her to take her medication.
When they were done eating, Bella and Mia took the plate back to the kitchen. They returned and began talking about the wedding they had attended. Jade called Mia a few minutes later.
"I'm leaving," she told her. "I have to go back home with my brother."
"Is there a problem?" Mia asked.
"No, my brother just wants me to come with him. I will be back by next week."
Mia nodded. "Safe trip then."
"Send my regards to Bella and Charlotte. I won't be able to call them. Can you help me tell them?"
"Sure," Mia said. "I'm with them now. I will let them know."
"Thank you," Jade said. "I have to go now."
"Sorry, when are you leaving?" Mia asked.
"In a few hours," Jade said. "I'm at the airport already."
Mia nodded. "Safe trip."
The call ended, and Mia announced Jade's departure to Charlotte and Bella.
"She's leaving with her brother," she added.
"Do you know that, Bella?" Charlotte asked.
Bella shook her head. "No?"
"Jordan did not tell you?"
Bella nodded. "He did not. We haven't spoken since we departed yesterday."
Charlotte sighed. "Maybe it's an emergency."
"I guess it is," Bella answered. "What about Jade's internship? Won't..."
Bella's phone began to ring. It was Stella, Charlotte's manager, calling.
"It's Stella," Bella told them. "I will put her on a loudspeaker."
Charlotte nodded. "You should let her know, though."
Bella nodded. She picked up the call.
"Hello, Stella."
"Hello, ma'am. One of the..."
"Is it about the company?" Bella asked.
"Yes. It's about one of the interns."
"Your boss is here. I will put you on speaker," Bella said.
"Sure," Stella answered. Bella placed the call on a loudspeaker. "You can go on."
"Okay. One of the interns named Jade Myles sent an email about an emergency. She needs to return home and won't be back until next week. Her reasons were genuine, so I approved it. Just thought you should know."
"Stella?" Charlotte called out.
"Yes, ma'am."
"Can you send me a copy of the email?"
"Yes, ma'am," Stella answered.
"Is that all?" Bella asked.
"I sent in the revised version of the documents that were sent back."
"Oh, thank you," Bella said. "I will check them."
"That would be all, ma'am," Stella said.
"Okay."
The call ended, and Bella dropped her phone on the table.
"What do you think the reason is?" Charlotte asked.
"I can't say," Bella answered. "Stella said it's genuine, though."
Charlotte stared at her phone. "I think she just sent it."
She opened the message and began to read it aloud.
"Their mom is sick?" Bella asked.
Charlotte nodded. "Yes. She also attached some proof."
Bella sighed. "He did not say anything to me."
"Maybe he doesn't want to bother you?" Charlotte said.
"Do you think it would be nice to call him?"
"They are already at the airport," Mia said. "I don't think he will pick up."
"Well," Charlotte said. "I don't think it's right to call him about it, though. If he wants you to know, he would have told you."
Bella nodded. Charlotte is right.
"I will just wait for his call."
Silence invaded the room for a few seconds until Liam spoke up.
"Mummy?"
Charlotte turned. "Baby? You're awake." She helped him up. "Are you hungry?"
Liam nodded. "Yes."
"Mia, can you please take Liam to the kitchen to get something to eat?"
"Sure." Mia stood up. "Come here, baby."
Liam stood up from the bed and moved closer to Mia. She picked him up, and they left the room.
Charlotte stared at Bella. "Are you okay?"
Bella nodded. "I am."
"You look worried. Are you worried about Jordan?"
"Not really. I..." Bella sighed. "Never mind." She stood up. "I will go check the documents Stella sent. You should get some rest."
Charlotte nodded and lay down. She knew Bella was worried about Jordan, but she didn't want to talk about it, and Charlotte wouldn't force her to, either.
Bella took Charlotte's laptop and began to work on the documents, while Charlotte scrolled through her phone.
"I created two files," Bella told her. "You might need to go through some documents before you sign."
Charlotte sat up. "Maybe I should do that now. I feel so bored."
Bella brought the laptop to her. "I can tell you are." She handed the laptop to her. "I am heading to the Academy to tidy up something. I will be back soon."
Charlotte smiled. "I am missing you already."
"I know you will. But I will be back soon. Mia will keep you company."
Charlotte nodded. "See you later."
Bella took her bag and left the room. With Charlotte alone in the room, she began to go through the documents Bella had prepared. Most of the documents only needed her signature; Bella did a pretty good job on them.
Charlotte smiled. Who can understand how she works if not Bella?
Charlotte sent back the signed documents, closed and placed the laptop on the table, and then lay on the bed.
She was already dozing off when she heard a knock on the door.
"Who's that?"
"Melvin," she heard.
"Come in."
Melvin walked in and sat beside her on the bed.
"Are you good?"
Charlotte nodded. "Yes, I am. How is work?"
"Fine," Melvin answered, staring at Charlotte.
"Is everything alright?"
Melvin nodded. "Yes. I'm just trying to process everything. Are you really going to keep the pregnancy?"
"You don't want me to?" Charlotte asked.
"Of course I do. But..." Melvin sighed. "Your company is at its busiest moment. I don't want..."
"That's why I need you," Charlotte cut him short. "You have to assure me that you will be there. It's twins, not one. I can't do it alone."
Melvin held Charlotte's hand. "I know I haven't been a good husband and father lately. And I am sorry about that. But I promise you that I won't let you go on this journey alone."
Charlotte stared at him. "Is that a promise?"
Melvin nodded. "Yes, it is."
Charlotte sighed. "Fine."
Melvin moved closer to her and pulled her into a hug. "Thank you."
He placed his hand on her stomach. "I've missed this feeling. How long has it been? Four years?"
"Talking about that," Charlotte said. "Liam's birthday is coming up. We promised him we would celebrate it."
Melvin nodded. "Yes, we did. I have been busy lately, and haven't thought about it. Do you have anything in mind?"
"I don't." Charlotte shook her head. "I've been busy too. But we can plan out something."
"We should speak to Mia. She is in the best position to do that," Melvin said.
"What are you two talking about?" Mia asked, folding her arms.
"When did you get in?" Melvin asked.
"A few seconds ago," Mia said. "I didn't know you were back."
"I am," Melvin answered.
