Chapter 36 Looking For The Truth
I covered my mouth with my hands and ran back to my room. Locking the door, I leaned on it, my mind swirling in different directions.
What exactly were they hiding?
I ran towards my closet, rummaging through my things for the card. When I found it, I let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding.
I felt my jaw clenching with uncertainty as I contemplated. Something deep inside me felt like I would be changing my life with the next step I would take.
Nervously, I dialed the number on the card.
…
“Madam, we have arrived your destination,” The taxi driver said, diverting my attention away from the door of the restaurant.
I blinked twice not knowing that I have been staring absentmindedly. I muttered an apology and paid him, telling him to keep the change. Getting out of the car, I inhaled deeply.
I stepped into the restaurant, looking around for any trace of her. The hairs on my skin stood straight and I felt cold. Every laughter, chatter or stare made me even more anxious than I already was.
A waiter walked towards me with a smile on his face. “Ma’am, are you here for Ms. Gordon?”
“Huh?” I raised a brow.
He nodded towards a table where Cecilia was sitting, staring at me as our eyes met, she left the glass of wine up. I swallowed and walked towards her table.
“I knew you would come around,” She said with a smile as I took a seat across from her as she studied me. “You look nervous.”
“I’m not,” I replied, hiding my fidgeting hands under the table.
Cecilia chuckled softly. “Suit yourself then. I will have the waiter take up our orders.”
I shook my head. “I’m not here to eat with you. It’s bad enough that I’m meeting you publicly like this.”
“Oh, “ She arched a brow. “You’re scared someone will see us? It’s seems Aurick is rubbing off on you. Impressive. Anyways, what do you want to know?”
I felt my heart pounding even faster in my chest as I thought about her question. I didn’t know exactly what was going on, I have no clue about what was going on.
Why was Aurick so scared about me finding out my father’s death?
Was there something or someone behind me?
I felt a shiver down on my spine as I considered my options.
Was he killed?
Sensing my reluctance to respond, she leaned back in her chair, folding her arms with an irritated expression.
“We don’t have all day, girl.”
“The truth,” I blurted out. “I want to know the truth.”
“The truth? There are many truths, Yvonne. You have to be specific.”
My jaw twitched as I pursed my lips before responding. “What do you know about my father’s death?”
Cecilia’s gaze was fixed on me, making me squirm uncomfortably in my chair. After a brief moment of silence, she reached into her bag and brought out a file and stretched it out towards me.
I stared at it with an inquisitive look. “What’s this?”
“Take it. It might give you some clarity.”
Hesitantly, I collected it from her and opened it. I was instantly dumbstruck. In the file were pictures of my mother and Aurick at different locations.
“I don’t understand,” I said, tilting my head as I stared at the photos.
“Those pictures were taken before your father died and before I got divorced. Your mother and my husband were having an affair,” She replied, smiling like she hadn’t just shaken up my whole world.
I slammed the file on the table, few of the photos landing on the ground. Patrons close to our table looked towards us but I didn’t care. I can’t have her lying about my mother like this!
I definitely made a mistake by coming here!
“Don’t you dare lie about my mother with these photoshopped pictures. There’s no way my mother would have done whatever you are saying she has done!”
“Darling, your mother was a whore,”Cecilia responded with a smirk. “A cheap whore at that.”
“Stop it!” I barked, my body trembling as I stood up from my seat.
At this point, everybody was staring at us.
Cecilia’s eyes narrowed at me. “I know you wouldn’t believe me—“
“Of course and I have been foolish to have even come here!” I retorted. “You are just as crazy as they said you were.”
“Crazy?”
I could see the fury burning in her eyes, a stark resemblance to when Barth was angry.
“Just because they couldn’t handle the truth coming out, they decided to paint me as crazy and keep me away from my son! They destroyed my life and my reputation. They took everything that I had worked for away!” She responded, tears brimming in her eyes. “Do you know how miserable I felt? Not able to see my son again and hearing him have a different opinion from me that I left him when I never did!”
“But, you did,” I scoffed, not feeling any bit of sympathy towards her. “You left him and he became ruined. All he had was Aurick who made sure he was comfortable when you left. We all know the story. You ran away to be with another man and left your son wounded and broken.”
Cecilia’s jaw tightened. “Do not speak to me in that manner! You don’t know what you are talking about. I was forced to leave my son! I didn’t do that willingly.”
From the corner of my eyes, I could see the waiter who had ushered me in and some security guards heading towards our table.
Cecilia saw them too because she stood up and carried her bag in her arms, ready to leave.
“If you think your mother is so innocent. Why don’t you show her this pictures yourself and hear what she has to say. Or if you would love to find out the truth, go into Aurick’s study room, in his safe you would find the answers and evidence that I speak the truth.”
She walked away from me, her eyes boring into mine before departing. My gaze fell to the scattered photos on the table.
