Chapter 391
Chapter 391
“Lilian... is she pregnant?”
“The blood test came back positive,” Ethan explained quickly and efficiently. “But we need confirmation from an ultrasound. And we need to know if everything is okay.”
The doctor's face lit up with a genuine smile.
“That's fantastic! Let's check it out right away. Lilian, come with me to the exam room.”
Lilian followed her, with Ethan close behind her like a protective shadow.
The environment was familiar: the antiseptic smell, the examination table, the ultrasound machine. But the feeling was completely new.
While the nurse prepared the equipment, Lilian lay down. In the past, she would look up at that white ceiling and feel like the loneliest woman in the world. Now, when anxiety threatened to rise, she felt Ethan's large, warm hand wrap around hers.
He was there. His blue eyes were fixed on her, conveying an unshakeable calm.
“Everything will be fine,” he whispered, kissing her forehead.
Dr. Kelsey applied the cold gel to Lilian's belly and began the exam. The silence in the room was heavy, broken only by the hum of the machine.
Lilian held her breath, her eyes fixed on the monitor, trying to decipher the black and white shapes.
“Well, doctor?” Lilian asked, her voice trembling. “Is everything okay?”
Kelsey narrowed her eyes, focused on the screen, moving the transducer slowly. Suddenly, a broad smile appeared on her face.
“Ethan, Lilian... congratulations.” She pointed to the monitor. “Lilian is indeed pregnant. You can see here... this little dot is your baby.”
The sound of the heartbeat, fast and rhythmic, filled the room.
Thump-thump-thump-thump.
Instant tears filled Lilian's eyes. The relief was so overwhelming that she sobbed. Ethan squeezed her hand, his own eyes watering, emotion catching in his throat.
“He's there...” Ethan whispered, amazed.
But Dr. Kelsey didn't stop the exam. She continued to move the device, her expression becoming focused again.
“Wait...” she said. “I have more news for you.”
Ethan's heart stopped. Fear instantly shot through him.
“More news?” His voice came out in a high-pitched whisper of panic. “Is the baby okay? Is there a problem?”
“No, Ethan, calm down,” the doctor quickly said, laughing at his reaction. “Actually, it's great news.”
“What is it, doctor?” Lilian asked, her heart beating wildly.
Kelsey adjusted the image on the monitor and looked at the couple with a sparkle of excitement in her eyes.
“Look closely.” She pointed to a second spot on the screen. “You're not expecting one baby. Congratulations... you're having twins.”
The room fell completely silent.
“Twins?” Ethan stammered, pale and shocked. “We're having... two?”
“Twins?” Lilian repeated, her voice a whisper of shock. Her eyes widened, fixed on the monitor, trying to process the duplicate image.
“Yes, Lilian.” Dr. Kelsey smiled from ear to ear. “You're pregnant with two babies. It's a miracle. After all the waiting... God has given you double. Congratulations, dear.”
Lilian and Ethan exchanged a look of pure disbelief, which quickly turned into explosive joy. They had come looking for certainty, for a little brother for Théo, and they were leaving with two.
It was more than a blessing. It was a cosmic reward.
Back in the office, still in a daze, they listened to the doctor's recommendations for a twin pregnancy.
“The pregnancy is still in its early stages, about six weeks,” Kelsey explained. “But I want to congratulate you again. I know the Legrand family was eagerly awaiting an heir. Your mother, Ethan, always told me she feared you would never marry or have children.”
Ethan smiled, squeezing Lilian's hand.
“Thank you for your kind words, Aunt Kelsey. But... this isn't our first child.”
The doctor's smile faltered.
“No?”
The confusion was evident. If Suelen Legrand said there were no grandchildren, what were they hiding?
“Doctor,” Lilian interjected softly. “Thank you for being there for me during those difficult years. I was pregnant at the time, remember? Despite everything, we made it.”
We have a healthy boy who is about to turn five.
“Congratulations...” Kelsey was moved, tears welling up in her eyes. “I felt so guilty for not being able to help at the time. It's wonderful to know that everything turned out well.”
“That's in the past,” Lilian smiled. "Our son is downstairs with his grandmother. You can meet him later.
“I'd love to!”
“But Auntie...” Ethan leaned forward, his tone becoming serious. “Please keep the pregnancy and our son a secret. No one knows, not even my grandfather or my parents. We want to keep it private for now.”
Kelsey, though surprised, nodded immediately. Medical confidentiality and personal loyalty guaranteed her silence.
As they left the office, they found Carlos in the hallway, talking to Harry.
Lilian sat down on a nearby sofa, still processing the news, while Ethan exchanged a few quick words with the assistant.
“Sister-in-law?”
Lilian blinked, coming out of her trance, and saw Carlos in front of her.
“Sorry, Carlos. I didn't hear you.”
“I asked how the exam went. Is everything okay?” Carlos seemed concerned by her silence. “Was the test wrong?”
Lilian smiled, a smile that lit up her face.
“Thank you, Carlos. Your test was right. I'm pregnant.” She lowered her voice, looking around to make sure no one was listening. “But we're not expecting one baby. We're expecting two.”
“What?!” Carlos's eyes widened, whispering back. “Twins? Wow! Congratulations, sister-in-law! That's fantastic!”
“Thanks, Carlos.”
Ethan approached at that moment, helping Lilian to her feet.
“What are you two whispering about?”
“She told me!” Carlos exclaimed enthusiastically. “Congratulations, Dad! You're finally going to have an heir! And I'm going to be an uncle to twins!”
Lilian frowned, confused.
“Carlos... you didn't know?” she asked.
“Know what?”
Lilian looked at her husband accusingly.
“Ethan, you didn't tell him about Theo?”
Carlos was on high alert.
“Who's Theo?”
Ethan shrugged, without the slightest sign of guilt.
“Our first child. He's almost five years old.”
“What the hell is this?!” Carlos almost shouted, attracting stares. “Seriously, Ethan? You have a five-year-old son and you didn't tell me? I'm your best friend!”
“You didn't ask,” Ethan replied with his usual irritating calm. He gestured to Lilian. “Let's go. We have another visit to make.”
As the couple walked away toward the elevator, Carlos stood open-mouthed, looking at Harry for confirmation.
“Harry... is your boss messing with me?”
“Who? Mr. Ethan? No.” Harry laughed, patting the doctor on the shoulder. “He's telling the truth.”
The boy is downstairs with his grandmother. He looks just like his father.
“What a heartless bastard...” Carlos muttered incredulously before running after them. He needed to see this secret nephew.
