Chapter 8
An officer walked beside my brother, laying out the situation. “We’ve collected blood samples at the scene and sent them for testing. The Crime Scene Unit is already on scene. The results should
come back soon.”
My brother crouched and searched for anything the killer had missed.
If only I could tell him: Brother, the killer is right beside you.
When he got back to the precinct, Dr. Howard Pike stood waiting, his face set.
“The results are in. The victim is… it’s Ivy Graham.”
My brother staggered back a few steps, staring at the report as he shook his head.
“No. No, that’s impossible. She can’t be dead. She can’t.”
Like a madman, he rushed into the autopsy suite and hauled out my body.
He reached for my ruined face, but his hand stopped in midair.
His tears hit my hand.
He gently lifted my hand and found the crescent scar in my palm.
Then he broke, sobbing out loud.
“Why? Why is it you, Ivy Graham?”
“Get up. Get up and argue with me. Call me ‘brother‘ one more time.”
“I’m… I’m not mad anymore. I never wanted you dead.”
“Why? Why did this happen to me? You’re all I have left. Ivy, I was wrong. Don’t leave me alone. Please, get up.”
The brother who loved me had finally come back.
The words I’d longed to hear finally came.
But I had no way to answer him.
It was all too late.

Brother, if I could have heard this while I was alive, how good that would have been.
But there is no going back.
