A sudden commotion broke out outside.
My brother stepped out and saw a high–school–aged boy, his eyes swollen red from crying.
“Officer, my sister’s missing. Please–please help me find her.”
My brother’s face turned grave. “Tell me exactly what happened.”
“My sister is twenty–one. She’s been working out of town, but I haven’t been able to reach her for
days.”
“She’s all I have left. Please, you have to find her.
Something flickered across my brother’s expression.
Even I felt my heart twist.
Their story sounded too much like ours–only I never had a brother’s love the way that boy’s
sister did.
His sister had been gone two days and he was out of his mind with fear.
I’d been gone four days, and my brother still said I was playing games.
I closed my eyes and found I couldn’t cry anymore.
The brother who once loved me most was truly gone.
My brother traded a look with Jack, then pressed his lips together, hesitating over how to tell the boy the brutal truth.
“We just recovered an unidentified female body…”
The boy’s knees buckled. “No… no, no…”
They half–carried him down the hall.
He was about to submit a DNA sample, fighting back tears, when his phone rang.
A cheerful female voice chimed in, “Hey, where are you? Why aren’t you home? I’ve been on the road for two days just to surprise you.”

“Sis, I thought something happened to you. I’m heading home right now.”
The boy wiped his face, bowed his thanks to the officers, and sprinted off.
My brother and I both exhaled.
Teams returned one after another from canvassing the area.
No one brought back anything useful.
His brow furrowed again. Time kept sliding by, and we still had nothing.
