Chapter 32 The Silence Before the Break

Chapter 32 The Silence Before the Break
Nyra

Sleep takes me gently.

That alone should have warned me.

I’m warm—wrapped in thick blankets, curled on my side. The room smells faintly of Malakai: pine, clean earth, lightning waiting to strike. My body hums with that deep, quiet contentment I’ve never known before, like every fractured part of me has finally settled into place.

Sable stirs lazily inside me.
 Safe, she murmurs.
I breathe out slowly and let myself drift.

The curtains flutter.
Just once.
I don’t wake.
A shadow passes over the floor.
Still nothing.
A faint click—soft, practiced—at the window latch.

My brow furrows as something in the air shifts. Not danger exactly. Just… wrong. Like the room has exhaled and forgotten to breathe back in.

My eyes flutter open.
Moonlight spills across the floor, silver and thin. The window stands open.
I sit up halfway, heart thudding.
“Malakai?” I whisper.
The answer comes fast.
Hands slam into me.

I scream—but a palm clamps over my mouth as iron bites into my wrists, burning hot and sharp. Runes flare, searing through my skin, and pain explodes up my arms.

Wolfsbane.
Magic dampeners.
My magic recoils violently, slamming into invisible walls inside my chest.

Vespera’s face snaps into focus above me.
She’s smiling.
Not the fake sweetness she wears in public—but something colder. Triumphant.
“Shh,” she murmurs. “You’ll wake the whole pack.”

I thrash, panic roaring, but another figure grips my legs, dragging me toward the edge of the bed. The blankets tangle uselessly around me as the room fills with shadows and muffled movement.

“You don’t get to do this,” I snarl, fury burning through the pain. “You don’t get to touch me.”
She leans closer, eyes glittering. “Oh, Nyra. You don’t understand.”
Her fingers trail down my cheek, mockingly gentle.
“You were never meant to keep him.”

Rage surges—but the cuffs tighten, magic choking off until my vision swims.
“You should have stayed asleep,” Vespera whispers.
The world tilts violently.
Darkness crashes down.

Malakai

I wake with a gasp.

Not from a dream.
From absence.
The bond—my constant, steady pull toward Nyra—flickers. Not gone. Muted. Like something thick and suffocating has been thrown over it.

Astrael surges instantly.
Wrong, he snarls. Something is wrong.
I’m out of bed before thought forms, heart pounding, already moving—already running.
Nyra’s door flies open under my hand.

The room smells like fear.
The bed is overturned. Sheets torn, half-dragged across the floor. The window gapes open, curtains snapping violently in the night air. Scorch marks burn into the wood near the bedside—runes, partially erased but unmistakable.

My vision tunnels.
“No,” I whisper.
Astrael slams against my control, rage like a storm crashing against glass.
They took her.

The world goes red.
I throw my head back and drive my voice into the pack link with brutal force.
“FULL LOCKDOWN. ALL WARRIORS TO STATIONS. ACCOUNT FOR EVERY MEMBER—NOW.”

The command echoes across Stormborn, sharp and absolute.
I drop to one knee beside the bed, fingers brushing the shredded sheets like I might still feel her warmth there.
Astrael howls inside me, raw and savage.
 Blood. I want blood.

Footsteps thunder down the corridor.
Tarek is first through the door, eyes snapping to the wreckage. “Malakai—”
“They took her,” I snarl, voice shaking with barely restrained violence. “From my house.”
Kael is right behind him, already crouching near the scorched markings. “Runes,” he says grimly. “Magic suppressors. Wolfsbane residue.”

Rowan’s jaw tightens as he takes in the scene, fury radiating off him. “This was planned.”
“From the inside,” Kael adds quietly. “These wards didn’t just fail. They were disabled.”
My hands curl into fists so tight my knuckles crack.

Astrael slams again, harder.
 Let me loose.
“I will,” I promise him silently. Soon.
I rise slowly, power coiling under my skin, the air around me vibrating with contained violence.

“Find her,” I command, voice deadly calm. “Find everyone involved.”
Tarek meets my eyes, understanding the unspoken truth.
There will be no mercy.

And gods help whoever thought Stormborn would break quietly—
Because this pack was built for war.
