Chapter 171
Chapter 171
Jess:
The vomit came first. Someone heard the fighting, and they called for us. We started running as fast as we could, but we didn’t exactly know where they were. The trackers did their best to find them. The scent of blood was pretty strong. By the time we got there, the fighting was done, and the scene that lay before us was like something straight out of my nightmares.
Green and Denver were still tangled up. I couldn’t tell which one of them was dead, but neither of them was moving.
My sister… Allie was lying unconscious at the bottom of a tree. I hurled when I saw her. Blood staining her clothes. I couldn’t tell if she was breathing.
I turned away as everybody else moved forward, assessing the damage.
“He’s dead!” I heard, and I didn’t know who they were talking about as my guts upheaved.
I couldn’t be doing this right now. I had to pull it together. I had to help them get medical attention. I was the medical attention, and I couldn’t move instead, all I could do was unleash the contents of my stomach.
“Jess,” he called to me, and I didn’t turn around. “Jess, she’s alive,” he told me. He rubbed my back, and I focused on the words that he said. I repeated them in my head again and again. “She’s alive,” he said it again for me.
“I’ve got to go. I’ve got to help them take her. She’s badly wounded,” he told me.
The pure happiness that I had left me, and I turned around to see them carrying away Allie on a board. I wanted to run after her, but I knew that I couldn’t. I had to stay here, and I had to help. I had to help. I had to help Green.
I wiped my mouth and rushed over, grabbing some gloves from Fallon.
“There you go,” she muttered as she got to work, looking at Green.
“Can you hear me, you idiot!” She smacked his face slightly, but my sister's mate didn’t move a muscle. I eyed the shoulder that was popped out of place and winced as Fallon brutally snapped it back in.
“ I’ve got a heartbeat on him, but it’s weak. He’s lost a lot of blood. Looks like he’s taken in some silver too,” she announced.
Another board was brought over, and we loaded him onto it. My hands were already coated in his blood.
“You guys go, I’m gonna take care of this asshole,” Jeremy announced. I stared down at the man, who was black and blue from Green's defense of my sister.
The monster in our nightmares now lay lifeless on the forest floor. He had lost. I wanted to be happy, but I wasn’t sure if it was true. Green and Allie were both maimed by his hand.
“What are you gonna do?” I asked, but the word spat out of my mouth.
“I’m not taking any chances. I’m cutting up this bastard and burning the pieces,” Jeremy announced, kicking the dead man's head to the side.
It was a fitting end. Nothing left of him could harm this world.
I followed after the rest of the team to help get Green to the clinic. When we arrived, my sister was already on an operating table, but I did my best to push that from my mind and focus on Green.
“I need four liters of O Neg!” Fallon barked out, and someone brought them over. “Make sure Montgomery has enough o positive for the Luna,” she murmured. The nurse ran off towards the OR.
Focus.
I got an I.V in on Green, and we began pumping him full of blood. I remembered what Fallon had told me that if there isn’t enough blood in the body for it to cycle, silver poisoning could kill a wolf.
Once the blood was flowing, we got to work bandaging him up. Fallon threw quick and nimble stitches along the wide gashes on his side. I gulped, looking at the open muscles being sewn back together. I was bandaging the many cuts all over his body.
“Goddess damned fool,” Fallon grunted as she worked tirelessly.
She didn’t bow down to the alpha title like everyone else, but she respected Green deeply. I know she hated seeing him like this, he was her leader after all.
The X-ray machine was wheeled in after she finished, and we made sure there wasn’t any internal bleeding. Despite a broken nose, broken ribs, a fracture to his knee, the now relocated shoulder, and a torn ACL. There wasn’t any internal bleeding. We stepped back from him once he was bandaged up. The blood is still flowing into him along with fluids.
“They shouldn’t have gone off on their own like that,” Fallon grunted. “But he should live,”
I watched her stalk off to the OR, and I wanted to follow, but I stayed rooted where I was. I wasn't like Allie. If I saw her on that table, I’d never be the same again. So I watched the monitor on Green beep slowly. His heart rate was slowly climbing.
“She’s alright,” Charlie announced as he came up next to me.
“She had some internal bleeding, some broken ribs, and a collapsed lung…” he rattled off the injuries, and I felt dizzy.
He steadied me, taking me over to a chair. “Don’t worry, both Montgomery and Fallon are in there now. She’s stable. She’ll pull through no problem.”
It didn’t help. I couldn’t believe that it was over. That Denver was dead. It had been a nightmare finding out Allie was a human mate, thinking she was fine all those months, only to have the band-aid ripped off and hear about the monster who’d been hunting her.
To think he was truly dead.
Allie and Green still had to pull through, but if they did…
I wouldn’t feel alright until my sister was out of the operating room. Until she opened her eyes. I needed to hear her voice.
I sat there staring at the floor as tears bubbled up in my eyes. Charlie didn’t tell me to stop crying, he didn’t wipe them away. Instead, he held my hand and sat next to me as the tears dripped down my face one by one. We waited for what felt like days before they came out of the surgery.
I jumped up to my feet as Fallon took off her mask.
“She did beautifully. Her lung is good, and the bleeding has stopped, she might sleep for a day or two, but she’s just fine,” Fallon informed me.
I dropped to my knees, my hands clasped together tightly. The relief was crushing my body to the ground. Charlie grabbed me and picked me up.
“Come on, come on,” he urged me forward, and we followed my sister in her bed to a room.
I watched her breathe evenly in and out. She had a massive bruise on her side, and she was bandaged around her chest. I came over to the side of the bed, grabbing her hand and kissing it.
“I’m here!” I told her. “I’m right here!”
It wasn’t very long before her brothers were there beside me, waiting for any sign of her waking up. None of us said anything for the next 36 hours. We slept there, not moving, not eating, not drinking. All of us hunched over the railings of her bed, waiting in bated breath for her to open her eyes.
I thought I was dreaming when her lashes finally fluttered.
“G-green,” she called.
