Chapter 170

Chapter 170
Allie:

I stayed rooted in my spot, petrified as I saw Denver sync his claws into Green. They didn’t get deep like they would’ve without the silver, but still, it took Green by surprise. He wrenches them out with a twisting motion, making the wounds deeper with what little he had to work with the sadistic son of a bitch, proving himself worth the title.

“She will die today, and so will you, and there will be nothing you can do to stop me!” Denver foretold.

He slammed his own head into Green’s nose, already broken, his blood splattering onto my mate. Green looked over at me as if for courage, as if there was something I could do to help him.

I saw it then, a change in him, the fear that gripped around him as Denver's power surged on.  He landed blow after blow on Green, and I was helpless to stop him. Even with many wounds to him, Denver still seemed to be powered by the belief that he would live, but nothing we did mattered. Even if he died today, it would be for some greater cause than any of us could ever imagine. His own insanity seems to be some almighty force keeping him going.

Green, however, only had me, only the want and will to protect me. I didn’t know how to keep him safe. I didn’t know how to stop this. All I knew was that I had to sit here and watch it. He took blow after blow before, somehow he got the strength to get up again. But they kept coming, and they kept dragging on, and I didn’t know how to make it end. It seemed like he wasn’t ever going to get up, and I felt like there was something I had to do. I had to tell him that it would be all right, that he would get out of this.

I closed my eyes, and I sat there, and I reached out for him across the bond. I reminded him of his promise to me that he wouldn’t die that we would live long and happy life together I thought back to all of those moments where we almost fell into one another, where we had found something worth fighting for where, even if we were on the road being hunted by this man, even if we were in the middle of a civil war against power, hungry idiots, we had fallen in love. Not because of some mate bond, not because of a goddess that I knew nothing about. Because we cared for one another. And that meant he had to get the hell up!

Just as Denver threw his arm back for another punch, Green’s face now matched his swelling, an eye bubbled up, unable to see out of it, a busted bloody lip, and one of his ears swelling large. He took his claws and dragged them down Denver’s neck, blood spurting out.

Denver grabbed onto Green, and they wrestled to the ground, rolling across the clearing. “Even if I go, I’ll take you with me!” he vowed.

Green and Denver separated, and for the final time, just as I remembered, they put their hands up. Denver seemed not to notice the wound on his neck, solely focused on Green. I wondered if he even remembered that I was there.

He swung, and Green knelt down, dodging and getting two blows to his stomach. Denver kneed him in the face, knocking him back. Then Green didn’t fall to the floor, and instead he stood back up, jostling his head as if to clear the blow from his mind. Denver came at him, but Green put his arm up to block. Denver put in two blows to the side that had been clawed.

They were locked together, a blow here, a blow there. They were picking each other apart bit by bit, dancing around the clearing, entangled in a bloody web, splattering the forest floor, and I couldn't tell who was worse off. I stepped forward, needing to see him better, needing to know he was alright.

A gust of wind entered the clearing, and Denver caught my scent, his eyes still red and unhinged from his wolf's control. He turned to look at me, forgetting Green. He started coming my way, and Green tackled him to the ground, the two rolling and wrestling for control. Denver winning and getting onto the top, punching Green once, twice, grabbing Green's arm, and a sickening pop followed.

“No!” I cried.

Denver raised his claws past where they should be fighting the effects of the silver, ready to make Green's death hurt.

This was it the moment that I never knew where it ended. It looked like Denver was about to win, but Green was still alive. His arm was broken, and all hope was lost, but I knew that something could happen, he could still win. Seeing him there now, his arm bent in a way it shouldn’t be, his breathing ragged as Denver was going in for the kill, I didn’t hesitate.

I ran forward, my knife extended, and I landed on the man's back, stabbing him with the knife again and again.

“You cannot take him from me!” I screeched.

I could hear the squelch of the blade in and out. I couldn't believe it was me who was doing something so violent, I was killing a man. Just as I thought I was winning his arm swung back and I went off of him into the air. The world whirring by me as I saw the two getting farther and farther away, I couldn’t breathe. I think he had knocked the air out of my lungs, or maybe he had broken a rib, searing pain in my chest as I continued to go sailing through the air.

Just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse, I landed on something hard, a crack happening behind me as I landed on something, possibly a tree. My mind went dizzy, and the world started to blur together.

I could hear the struggle between them, but I couldn't focus on them any longer, my injuries taking hold. I could still feel the knife in my hands as I tried to get closer to them. I moved forward, but the haziness only grew. My breath unable to fully inflate. I was horribly hurt, but I couldn't care less. I had to see that Green was alright.

All I could make out was the grunting of them and the sound of fists on flesh. The two men both trying to finish this endeavor quickly to either help me or finish me off. There was a sharp, tangled groan and a cry and then…

Crack!

Silence. The loud snap of a neck being broken, but I couldn't hang on any longer, the world faded to black around me. I didn't know what I would wake to or if I would wake at all. All I knew was I would be with him, and that was enough.
