Chapter 145 144: Energy, Essence & Exsitence
Chapter 145 144: Energy, Essence & Exsitence
The Headmaster finally looked at the four boys and what he said next made the air turn cold.
"She is dying."
The words struck like lightning.
"No."
Kade's growl was immediate. "There must be something you can do."
Alaric's crimson eyes narrowed dangerously."You're the most powerful mage alive. Fix it."
Damien's hands trembled. "Please..."
But the Headmaster did not move. "There is a way," he said slowly.
Hope flickered in their eyes.
Then he continued. "But it requires a sacrifice."
The word landed heavily.
"What kind of sacrifice?" Lucien asked carefully.
The Headmaster looked directly at them.
"One of you must give her your essence."
Silence swallowed the courtyard.
Damien blinked.
"My... essence?"
The Headmaster nodded.
"Your essence is the core of what you are. Your magic. Your identity. Your supernatural bloodline."
His voice remained steady.
"If one of you transfers that essence to Seraphine, it will replace the life force she burned away."
Kade's grip tightened around her unconscious body.
"And she'll wake up?"
"Yes."
For a moment hope surged again.
Then the Headmaster finished the sentence.
"But the one who gives it will lose everything."
The courtyard fell silent again.
"You will lose your power," the Headmaster said calmly. "Your supernatural identity will vanish completely."
He looked at each of them in turn. "You will no longer be what you were born as."
His gaze moved to Kade.
"If you sacrifice your essence, you will no longer be a werewolf. Your pack will no longer recognize you. Your own bloodline may reject you."
Kade's jaw tightened.
The Headmaster turned to Damien.
"You are not merely a dragon. You are the heir to a dragon throne. Without your essence, your claim disappears. Your family would cast you aside."
Damien's stomach dropped.
Then Alaric.
"A vampire without essence becomes nothing. No power. No status. No place in your kind."
Alaric said nothing, but his expression darkened.
Finally, Lucien.
"And an incubus without essence becomes... simply human."
Lucien let out a quiet breath.
His silver eyes lowered slightly.
The meaning of the sacrifice settled slowly over them all.
This wasn't just losing power.
This was losing who they were.
Everything.
Their identities. Their futures. Their place in their own worlds.
All gone.
The Headmaster folded his hands behind his back.
"It must be one of you," he said quietly.
Four pairs of eyes snapped toward him.
"Why?" Damien demanded.
The Headmaster's voice remained calm.
"Because of the bond created long before any of you were born."
He looked down at Seraphine again.
"When Seraphine's mother, Selene Emberlain, chose to live among humans, she performed an ancient ritual."
Nyx continued the explanation.
"She used the blood and essence of your fathers to anchor her existence in the human realm."
The boys stared at them.
"That spell bound your bloodlines together," Nyx said. "Not only with Selene... but with the future Aetherborn."
The Headmaster nodded.
"That bond passed down through generations."
His gaze returned to them.
"Which means you are the only ones who carry the compatible essence required to save Seraphine."
Silence wrapped around them like chains.
Kade stared down at Seraphine's pale face. Damien's hands clenched into fists. Alaric looked away, his thoughts unreadable. Lucien stood unusually still.
The choice sat in front of them.
Heavy.
Terrifying.
They loved her.
They cared about her.
But giving up their essence meant giving up themselves.
Their power.
Their future.
Their identity.
The Headmaster's voice broke the silence. "So," he said quietly. His eyes rested on the four boys. "Is anyone willing to volunteer?"
No one spoke.
And for the first time since the battle ended, fear truly entered the room.
Because the question now hung between them all.
Who would give up everything...
For Seraphine?
Wind moved softly through the broken pillars of the academy, carrying the distant cries of injured students and the crackle of fading fires.
Kade stared down at Seraphine in his arms.
His jaw tightened.
His pack. His family. His entire life was tied to who he was. A werewolf without his essence would not just lose power. He would lose his place in the world.
Slowly, reluctantly, he stepped back.
Alaric's crimson eyes lingered on Seraphine's pale face. A vampire's identity was everything. Power. Status. Bloodline. Without it, he would become something worse than weak. He would become nothing.
Alaric clenched his fists but he did not step forward.
Lucien stood very still. His silver eyes flickered with conflict. Seraphine had chosen him for the Moonlight Ball.
For a moment, he had believed he might finally matter to someone beyond charm and flirtation. But to give up his essence...
To become ordinary. To lose the very nature of what he was.
Lucien lowered his gaze. "I..." he started quietly. Then stopped. He couldn't say the words.
The silence grew heavier.
Then-
"I'll do it."
Every head turned.
Damien stepped forward.
Shock rippled across the courtyard.
Kade stared at him. "You can't be serious."
Even the Headmaster, Virelkan Duskrend Kamina, looked surprised.
Damien's expression was calm.
Strangely calm.
"I started this," he said quietly.
The others frowned.
Damien looked down at Seraphine.
"When she first came here... I was the one who lured her to Melinda." His voice softened. "If I hadn't... maybe she wouldn't be lying here now."
The Headmaster studied him carefully "Damien," he said slowly, "you are dragon royalty."
The murmuring in the crowd grew louder.
"You are the heir to the dragon throne," the Headmaster continued. "If you surrender your essence, you will lose your claim. Your brothers will take the throne instead."
Damien didn't hesitate. "I know."
His voice was steady.
"You will lose your power. Your status. Your inheritance."
"I know."
The Headmaster watched him closely.
"Your family may reject you completely."
Damien finally lifted his eyes.
For the first time, something fierce burned in them.
"I would rather lose a throne," he said quietly, "than lose Seraphine."
A wave of whispers spread through the gathered students.
Even Nyx looked slightly stunned.
Beside him, Kade ran a hand through his hair, conflicted.
Alaric said nothing.
Lucien exhaled slowly.
The truth hurt.
They cared about her.
But Damien was the only one willing to lose everything.
The Headmaster nodded once.
"Very well."
He stepped aside slightly.
"If you are certain... then kneel beside her."
Damien moved forward.
Slowly, he knelt beside Seraphine's still form.
For a moment he simply looked at her. Her face was peaceful. Almost as if she were sleeping.
The Headmaster placed one glowing hand gently over Seraphine's chest. Ancient runes began forming in the air. Magic hummed softly around them.
"This ritual transfers essence through breath," the Headmaster said quietly.
Damien understood immediately.
He leaned closer. His heart pounded once in his chest. Then he gently kissed Seraphine. The moment their lips touched-
light erupted.
Golden dragon energy poured from Damien like a rushing river, flowing directly into Seraphine.
The air vibrated with power.
Students shielded their eyes.
The transfer lasted only seconds.
Then Damien's body suddenly went limp.
He collapsed beside her.
Kade lunged forward instantly. "Damien!"
But the Headmaster raised a hand sharply.
"Stop."
The command froze them.
"This is the essence, leaving him," the Headmaster said calmly.
"Do not interfere."
The boys watched helplessly.
Golden light continued flowing from Damien's body into Seraphine. His dragon aura faded slowly. Weaker. Dimmer. Until finally-
It vanished.
The courtyard fell silent again.
Damien lay motionless beside Seraphine.
And for a moment-
nothing happened.
Then-
Seraphine's fingers twitched.
