Chapter 32
Larry helped Rebecca load the groceries in the car a while later. They got in the car. Larry put the key in the ignition but didn't start it. He turned to Rebecca. "I think next time, I'll wait in the car."
"Maybe next time, I will have my license and can go alone."
"That's fine, too." Larry said then started the car. He pulled out.
Larry pulled into a car lot a while later. "Do you see anything you like?"
"Larry, I told you I didn't want you to buy me a new car."
"I know, but you are going to need a vehicle when you get your license. I will have mine at work."
"It could take a while for me to get my license. I have to get a social security card and that could take a while. I don't want you to buy me a car, Larry. Can we go home? The milk will get warm."
"All right. Fine." Larry said then pulled out of the car lot. "I wish you would let me buy you things. Especially something you need."
"We talked about this before."
"I know," Larry said. "You're going to need something to drive when the time comes."
"We'll figure it out then," Rebecca said. "I love you, Larry, but I need to get use to everything that is happening. I am doing my best."
"I know. I'm sorry."
"So am I."
A few minutes later, they pulled up to the hotel. Larry shut off the car. Joe came over and opened Rebecca's door. She got out. "Thanks, Joe."
"You're welcome ma'am."
Larry opened the trunk. "Can you have someone take these upstairs, Joe."
"Yes sir." Joe said then waved someone over. "Take these up to Mr. Newman's suite, please, Don."
"Yes sir." Don said then picked up some bags. Rebecca picked up the remaining bags. "You don't have to help me, ma'am. I can come back down."
"It's not a problem," Rebecca said.
They walked inside. Shelly walked over to them. "There's a detective waiting at the bar for both of you."
"Thanks, Shelly." Larry looked over at Rebecca. "I'll take care of this. Go on upstairs." He said then kissed her cheek. "I'll be up, shortly."
"All right," Rebecca said. She walked over to the elevator with Don. They got on when the doors opened. Rebecca saw Larry watching her as the doors closed.
Rebecca put the groceries away and started pacing across the room. Larry came into the suite a while later. Rebecca walked over to him. "What did they want?"
"We should sit down." He said as he put his arm around her. He started to lead her to the couch.
"This doesn't sound good." She said as they made it to the couch. They sat down.
"I want you to know, you don't have to do this, but Detective Sharp wants to talk to you before he talks to the other detectives. He says he will tell them everything after he sees you."
"Why does he want to see me?"
"He wouldn't say. You don't have to do this. We have a case without him talking."
"We only have him here and the assault on us," Rebecca said. "That's not enough to keep him in jail." She said as she got up. She walked across the room. She stopped and turned to Larry. "If he tells them everything, I know he did, he will be in jail until he dies. I won't ever have to worry about him again."
"No you won't." Larry said as he stood up. "You won't have to worry about him anyway. I will make sure of it."
"I want him in jail, Larry. For both of us. I don't want you to worry about him either. I will go talk to him." She said then walked over to the windows. "If he confesses then his trial won't take so long. Then we can get on with our lives."
"All right. I will let the detective know."
"Thank you," Rebecca said. "I want this over."
"I know." Larry said then pulled out his phone. He dialed a number. "Tell him she will do it." He waited. "Yes, that's fine." He hung up. "They will be waiting at the station."
"I have to use the bathroom first." Rebecca said then walked down the hall.
They rode quietly to the police station. Larry parked and got out. He walked over to the passenger's side and opened the door. Rebecca slowly got out. Larry pulled her close. "You don't have to do this."
"Yes I do," Rebecca said. "I want to do this for both of us. For our future."
"Let's get this over with then." Larry said then pulled away a little. He took her hand and walked her into the station. The chief met them at the door and led them to the back. They went into the observation room where they saw the detective sitting at a table.
"Are you sure you want to do this?"
"Yes, chief. I need to do this."
"We will be here recording everything. Officers will be right outside the door if anything happens."
"I'll be fine," Rebecca said. She looked at Larry and took a deep breath. She let go of his hand and followed the detective out the door. They walked around the corner and he opened the door. She walked in and over to the table. She sat down across from the man.
"Thank you for coming," he said.
"What is it that you want?"
"I really want to kill you, but I couldn't do that. You ruined me and got me arrested. You are a strong, brave, and a very persistent person. You didn't give up no matter how much I threatened you. You were smarter than I gave you credit for. I will confess what I have done. I know that I will be in prison for the rest of my life, but I want you to know that I will never be sorry for what I've done. I just wish I would have been a little smarter than you," he said. "You should always do what you think is right and don't give up on it. In my eyes, I was doing the right thing, but somehow, I know that you stopped me for a reason. I just wanted you to know that I don't hold anything against you for doing what you did."
"I have one question for you. Was it worth it?"
"Yes, it was."
Rebecca got up. "Thank you. I know you will get what's coming to you." Rebecca said then walked to the door. She walked out.
Rebecca sat at the bar about 12:30 in the morning when Larry walked up behind her. He waited a moment then sat down on the stool next to her. He motioned to the bartender for a drink. He waited until he brought the drink and left. He took a sip. Rebecca didn't say anything. They sat there quietly for several moments until they finished their drinks. Rebecca got up and took Larry's hand. "I think I want to go somewhere where's there's a beach with white sand."
"You got it. I will start making arrangements." He said as they walked to the elevators.
