Chapter 21

Larry stood in the doorway of Rebecca's bedroom for several minutes watching her work on the computer. He finally tapped his knuckles on the door. "What are you doing?"

"I'm trying to decide which one is better," Rebecca said. "What do you think?"

Larry walked into the room and over to the desk. He squatted down next to her and looked as she went through the pictures. "I like the fifth one," he said.

Rebecca clicked back. "This one?"

"They all look the same to me."

"Well you think the old advertisement looks fine too," Rebecca said. She closed the laptop. "I'll look at it later with fresh eyes."

"That's a good idea," Larry said. He put his hand on her thigh. "Did you get you dress?"

"Not yet. Monica said she will send it up when it gets here. She said she would get it here by five."

"Isn't that cutting it short?"

"If the party doesn't start until seven, I will have plenty of time to get ready."

"All right."

"So, is the deal final now?"

"Yes. The papers are signed, the money has been exchanged and now the party happens."

"Do you have a party after all the deals are done?"

"Usually that's up to the buyer, but my father is having this party for the clients."

"That's nice of him."

"I guess. He likes to throw money around."

"Do you ever throw the parties?"

"I have a couple of times," Larry said. "He likes to do it so I let him. He has the space for it."

"So, it's at your father's house?"

"Yes." Larry stood up. "I was thinking about getting you your own office. You shouldn't have to work in the bedroom."

"This is fine, Larry. I don't need a huge office like you. At least for now. After I finish this advertisement, I'm not sure what I am going to do."

"All right."

"I know you want to spoil me and get me everything you can, but I not use to all this. You saw my small apartment. The whole thing wasn't much bigger than this room." Rebecca stood up and stood in front of him. "I love you, Larry but you need to give me time to adjust to all of this."

"I guess I am trying to do too much at one time. It's just that I haven't felt this way about anyone before."

"Neither have I," Rebecca said.

Larry pulled Rebecca close and held her. "I guess that I need to remember how you must feel. I can't help but to want to spoil you."

"Just give me some time. There's too much going on right now."

"All right." Larry hugged her. Someone knocked at the door. "That's probably the chief." Larry said then let her go. He started walking out.

"Give me a minute or so."

"All right." Larry walked out.

Rebecca walked into the living room a few minutes later. "Hello, Chief Reuben. How have you been?" She asked as she shook his hand.

"I've been all right for the most part. How about you?"

Rebecca sat down next to Larry. "The majority of my memory came back."

"That's good." The chief said. "I can't stay long. I was just on the way home. We found your car behind a hotel on Main Street. Do you remember if you rented a room there?"

"I rented a room at a motel outside of town. I don't remember what it was called, though, but it was by a truck stop. I paid cash for the night. The next day is when he found me. I was parked at the police station trying to get up enough nerve to go in when he come out and saw me."

"He was in my station?"

"Yes. He came out talking to a uniformed officer," Rebecca said. "I drove off, but he followed me. I was trying to find my phone in my purse, but I dropped it. I ran up on a curb and flattened the tire. I took off on foot and ran."

"He must have changed the tire and moved it. There was a flat in the trunk. We also found your phone under the seat. We are still processing your car and everything in it, but he must have worn gloves. His fingerprints are nowhere so far."

"He was wearing gloves when he beat me up."

"If he was at the station, he should be on surveillance footage. Then we could at least put him here."

"Would we have a case then?"

"It's possible. I will look into it." The chief said. "Do you remember where you had the flat tire?"

"I don't know."

"All right. It's not a problem."

"Yes, it is. I should have paid more attention."

"You were fearing for your life," Larry said. "Don't worry about it."

"I do worry about it. Just one camera catching him places him here. That helps out my case."

"I know, but you couldn't have known that then."

"I just wish I was more attentive. I was a reporter."

"Rebecca, don't beat yourself up over this. We are still investigating this. We are doing anything that we can to catch this guy."

"I appreciate it, Chief Rueben. I want this guy behind bars for what he has done to me and the others."

"So do I. The reason I came here today is to tell you that he has been suspended. They took his badge and gun before they released him. They have opened up the investigation and Brian and his team are keeping an eye on him."

"So, he's out on the streets?"

"Yes but are safe here. Between the security at the hotel and my police force knowing to keep an eye out for him, nothing is going to happen to you." Chief Reuben said. "I want you to come down on Monday to tell the DA of the whole story since you remember more."

"I just told you."

"I know, but I want it on record."

"All right," Rebecca said.

"I'll call you with the time." Chief Rueben got up. "I'll see you then."

Larry got up and shook the chief's hand. "Thank you, chief," Larry said. "I'll walk you out." He said then followed the chief to the door. They talked for a few moments then the chief left. Larry walked back over to the couch with Rebecca. He sat down next to her. "Baby, I don't want you to worry about anything."

"I'm not worried about my safety. I know I am safe here. I'm worried that nothing is going to happen to that detective and he will keep doing what he's doing."

"He will mess up some time," Larry said. "He will pay somehow."

"Yeah, I know," Rebecca said. She leaned her head back. "So, what are your plans for this weekend?"

"I'm not sure. I did think about going to the beach for the weekend, but that might be spoiling you too much." Larry smiled. Rebecca hit him with the back of her hand across his chest. "Or we could hang out here."

"Make whatever plans you want. A getaway sounds nice, actually."

"Great. Do you like the beach or would you like a cabin in the woods?"

"It doesn't matter. Whichever is more peaceful, I guess."

"All right," Larry said. "I'll see which one I can get on short notice." Larry said then got up. "Are you going to be all right?"

"Yes, I'll be fine. I'm just going to sit here and wait for my dress."

"All right." Larry said then walked back to his office.

The doorbell rang around 4:30. Rebecca got up and walked over to the door. She opened the door. "Hey, Monica. I was starting to worry."

"I'm sorry. They sent the wrong dress on the truck so I had to go and get the right one."

"At least it's here with time to spare. Thank you."

"Have a great evening." Monica said then walked away.

Rebecca closed the door and carried the dress back to her bedroom. She closed the door.
