Chapter 26: He pesters

Mark's words rang in Lacey's head when she returned to work and she almost slapped a hand against her forehead, she knew that she should have rejected his offer but she wanted to just humor him

she chuckled lightly as she settled in her desk. What did he have that could woo a woman? Did he think his subservient act was going to make her fall in love with him? Oh goodness he must be joking.

He didn't say anything though as she opened her laptop, thank God she got to work before break was over. Mr. Dave would have had her head for lunch and she wouldn't have known what to do with her life, anyway that was the beauty of working somewhere not too far from her home.

There was a knock on the door and she looked up, the perfume scent already gave the person away. " Elsa, come in." She said and Elsa pushed the door open.

" Hey, babe. You've been wheels on stick recently. I don't know how to catch you anymore."

She looked at the door, " We are at work, why are you looking for me when you could just head up to my office?" She asked.

Elsa shrugged, " maybe I just wanted to complain about you ignoring me these days. You've been rolling with the hotshots."

Lacey furrowed her brows, "What hotshots?" She asked. Her life had been pretty boring and chaotic. Most importantly, she had been stressed mentally and physically, " I don't know what you are talking about."

" I heard that you attended a party over the weekend."

"Oh? That was a work-related event."

Elsa snorted in disbelief, and Lacey sighs, " Mr. Alistair. " she said, causing her to get more angry.

" What are you even doing with that guy? He's premium headache."

" I don't know what I am doing with him to be honest. All I need is to get him to sign that deal but he's there insisting that we be more than friends. The boss is counting on me to get that deal come to fruition, I don't even know how they expect me to do it. It's just so frustrating and tiring. I can't remember the last time I had a sound sleep, it's been from one problem to another. I am already tired of everything. I can't function properly." She complained.

Elsa rose from her seat and went close to her, hugged her partially and patted her back, " I'm sorry, I didn't know that you have been facing all these things silently, why didn't you say anything?"

"And dump my problems on you? Knowing how much of a worrier you are? Of course not." Lacey replied and Elsa chuckled.

" What are friends for? If I don't worry about your business, who will? No one." Elsa said shutting down Lacey's complaints.

" Aren't you scared of getting caught on camera?"

Elsa chuckled, " I have taken care of it"

Lacey's eyes almost bulged out of their sockets, " What do you mean you've taken care of it? What did you do?"

" Oh, nothing much, I might have just removed their switch, don't ask me how. I had help though." She grinned evilly.

"Even at that, I must say you are very wicked, because tell me how you would manage to do all of that without being caught. For what? To speak to me? Don't tell me you are involved in any office crime." She said with a warning tone.

Elsa laughed, unbothered by her friend's tone, "Will you just learn how to take a chill pill? Of course I don't have any expertise in removing CCTV systems. It's down at the moment. I heard them discussing it before and I decided to seize that opportunity." She smacked her lips playfully, " So, you my friend have a lot to tell me."

Lacey punched some words into her laptop, " I don't have anything to tell you, it's past break time."

Elsa snapped the laptop shut, and Lacey withdrew her fingers, staring at Elsa in wonder "You don't mean that, because as it stands, we have to get someone else that would do your job , you and I have to talk and I'm not even joking about it."

" So, what do you want to talk about today?"

" You. What are you doing concerning your husband's case?"

Lacey rolled her eyes and sighed, " Of all the things you want to ask me."

" It's important, he's a part of your life."

" Well not anymore. We are getting a divorce."

Elsa's eyes widened like saucers and at a point, Lacey began to fear for her, " Say something." She urged.

" I don't know what to say. Don't tell me your mom talked you into this." Elsa said regretfully and Lacey rolled her eyes yet again wondering what gave these people the impression that she was probably a weakling that couldn't make decisions herself.

"That's an insult if you don't know." She said and Elsa raised her hand in mock surrender.

" I'm sorry I didn't mean to, but we all know that your mother, no offense, is the architect of this problem. She doesn't want you to remain in that marriage." Elsa said in an unapologetic tone.

" Yeah, but that didn't influence my decision. Isn't it time I rest from shouldering his burden? My arms are getting weak."

" What will you do now?" .

" Get my life back."

" And by getting your life back you mean dumping him because he is broke momentarily?" Elsa fired hotly, " I hope you know that there are sharks out there and not anyone worthy to be called a husband. Why are you trying to throw him out of your life? He can still make money tomorrow." She added.

" I don't care about his money to be honest."

" So you think? How would you feel if another woman comes into his life and reaps everything you've worked for? Haven't you watched The Acrimony? I promise you, Mark is going to be great someday."

Lacey's phone replied, ringing very loudly, " Hello?"

" I'm outside your office, come downstairs."
