The Other Side Of Him (4)
I had been avoiding Adams Carter when I discovered I was pregnant. Mum had no idea why I was sick and couldn't bring myself to eat whatever she cooked.
I didn't even know he would be coming to our school for a business seminar which he planned to hold with the students.
Immediately I noticed he was the guest lecturer teaching, I continually lowered my eyes on my book to avoid meeting his eyes.
While the class went on, my bowels swirled in circles and I knew what that meant. I forced myself out from my seat and excused myself.
I had gotten a pregnancy test kit on my way to school and rushed into the empty toilet to throw up the contents.
Carla and Hannah were watching me intently as soon as I retched out all that I had eaten. I barely ate except mum forced me to.
Then I closed the doors, brought out the test kit and tested myself.
I was definitely pregnant.
What was I to do?
What would I tell mother?
Will I tell her that Adams Carter had found me desirable three weeks ago, made love to me and I had completely been avoiding him?
Mother wouldn't believe me.
My eyes blurred.
What would I do?
I flushed down the vomit, opened the door and found my frenemies staring back at me.
"She's pretending to be sick." Hannah said with a grimace.
"She looks even way uglier." Carla put in.
I ignored them and started towards the washing zinc where I could wash my hands and face.
My silence must have reeled them because Carla grabbed my hair and pulled at it.
"Let me go!" I shouted although my voice was weak for it to be audible.
Pain tore through me as she pulled my hair even harder.
"You think you're the best, huh? And you can ignore us like we don't exist?" Hannah kicked my calfs.
I pitched forward, hitting my head on the zinc before I landed on the floor. I let out a scream.
My head swirled around in circles. Something snapped and the test kit which I had hidden fell off.
I was oblivious to the blood trickling down the side of my face. My hand tried to reach for the pregnancy test kit in a haste to shield my shame.
"What is this?" Hannah kicked it away from me.
Then she picked it up and studied it briefly.
"Give it back," I said to her.
Hannah gasped, giving it to Carla. "She's even pregnant." Carla laughed.
Carla pulled me up with my hair. "Who's the father of the child? Some homeless boy?" She teased.
I tried to push her away but Hannah grabbed both of my hands from behind me.
"Let me go!" I screamed helplessly.
"If she won't tell us the father of the child, perhaps if we do something to the child, the father will show himself. He could be a student, a poor struggling boy just like her." Hannah laughed.
Carla picked up a plank which was situated near by. "Good idea, Hannah. You always think ahead, don't you?" Carla grinned.
My eyes blurred instantly.
I still hadn't come to terms that I was carrying Adams Carter's child. I haven't told my mother, I haven't told Adams Carter either.
Hannah forced me to my knees again as I tried to kick Carla.
"Please, I beg you. Don't do this," tears fell from my eyes.
"Hold her still," Carla swung the plank in the air and it landed on my stomach.
Pain hit me like it rained rocks. I shouted.
"Please, it hurts." I cried.
Another hit and I thought I would die.
I was slipping out when the plank swung for the third time and the doors flew open.
"One touch on her, you will ever regret what pushed you to this!" It was Adams Carter, the father of my child.
When I woke up, I was in the hospital bed. My head ached slightly and Adams Carter was holding my hands.
"My baby," I said, holding my stomach.
"You are alright now." Adams grabbed my hands.
His eyes spoke of an intense worry for me. But I was more concerned about my baby.
"What of the baby?" I couldn't help the tears that streaked down my cheeks.
"Mia, the baby is safe," he said.
I started to cry and he pulled me into his arms. "Why won't you tell me about it, Mia?" He tilted my chin.
I was surprised at his calmness. "I only learnt about this today." I confessed.
"Is that why you've been completely avoiding me?"
My lips quivered. "I thought I didn't meet up to your expectations. I had seen the symptoms of my pregnancy earlier but I was afraid if I voice it to you, you wouldn't accept me. I am just the daughter of a maid."
"Whoever told you that you're not worth me?" His eyes broke into my soul.
"I thought...." I swallowed my words.
"Assumptions doesn't end well. When it comes to me, do not hold back. You're more than just a woman to me. You are my woman, and no one can dare to lay a hand on you." He brushed my lips affectionately and kissed me.
That confession was my undoing. Adams Carter was in love with me. And he didn't care that I was just some maid's daughter.
I leaned into him and pressed my lips back on his. We kissed intensely for awhile before he broke the kiss.
"You are such a strong woman, Mia. Carla and Hannah will pay for the hurt they've caused you. I showed the school authority the footage of the assault, and justice will be served. No one dares to lay a hand on you and goes scout free." His hand brushed down my hair till it fell to my breasts.
My breath hitched as he toyed around my nipples. I parted my lips watching as his eyes darkened.
He circled a finger around my nipples until they poked through my dress. I wore a thin lace material for a brassieres.
"I haven't told my mum about the baby." I fought the waves of emotion as he placed himself beside me and started to kiss my neck.
"Our baby, Mia. We'll make it known to her that you're my wife."
"Wife?" I looked at his eyes, surprised at the words.
He smiled warmly. "Or don't you want to marry me?" He asked.
What that his way of asking me to become his wife?
This other side of him was interesting to watch.
And the way he touched and kissed me.
Tell me, how could I refuse him?
"Yes," I said, "I will marry you."
