Chapter 127 - Unreject Me

Kaya’s pov

I walked towards the house with an anxious heart. Kathy was just a human, and the worst she could do to me was scream and create chaos, alerting the neighbours. I didn’t want that, but I was there to face it all.

She opened the door and welcomed me inside. I hesitated a little as soon as I saw her ever-smiling face. She was a sweet lady, and I was about to turn her life upside down.

“Pete’s not in town. He travels a lot for work. Right now I think he is in Italy,” she said as she escorted me inside. “You are always welcome here, Kaya. Don’t stay in a hotel when you visit this town, okay? We have enough rooms for your entire family.”

My lips pursed. It was best I broke the news to her sooner than later.

“Kathy, he didn’t travel for work,” I said. She cast a confused look at me.

“How would you know?”

“He came to visit us and stayed at our place the whole time.”

Her lips parted as her forehead creased. “But... why would he lie to me?” she started to shake her head. “No. He would never... we talked every night. He would send me texts in the morning. He knows I won’t check my phone until my break at the university, so he patiently waits for my response. Well, he didn’t call me last night or text me this morning. But I am sure he will call me tonight. Sometimes work gets in the way.” Her friendly expression changed. “Why would he lie about going to meet his niece? That doesn’t make any sense.”

I heaved a breath. “He lied because he didn’t want you to know where he was going. He didn’t want you to tag along or even find out where we lived. I know we are his family, but I can’t stand liars. That’s why I am here to tell you the truth.”

“No…” She slowly sank to the couch. Her gaze wandered around until they found mine. “You are lying. I didn’t expect this from you!” Her voice got louder.

“Why would I lie?” I said, shrugging my shoulders.

“Because you are jealous of his success! You are envious about how well he has done in life. Of his popularity. Perhaps this is the reason he never spoke about his family. I am glad I never pushed him into contacting his family. You all deserve to be pushed away!”

I held back a scoff. Kathy’s reaction wasn’t unexpected, and she was unaware of our reality. Closing my eyes, I shook my head as I picked up my phone. I knew that nothing I said would prove anything to her. I opened the recording on my phone and played it. Her tense muscles relaxed when she heard his voice.

“What is that?” Her breathing had laboured.

I showed her the screen of my phone. Her mouth hung open when she saw Pete sitting at the dinner table in our pack house. I knew the words he said would break her heart bit by bit, but she had to see it.

“He came to visit us, and this is what he said he did to you.”

She stared at the screen and then at me. I could tell that she was still in denial. She scurried towards the coffee table where her phone was and called his number. He was unreachable. We had put his charred body in his car and made it look like an unfortunate accident, but I waited for her to stop trying to contact him.

“He isn’t reachable... Where is he?”

“He left. He knows we recorded this, and I told him that I would tell you everything.”

I didn’t know if the humans would ever find his burnt car lying at the base of the mountain. Even if they did, it would appear like he met with an accident on the way back and the car broke into flames.

“I think he admitted to us thinking that we will side with him since we were related. But I can’t. What he did was a crime.”

Her blue-grey eyes suddenly welled up with tears. I felt bad for her. Her world was crumbling down, and unfortunately I was the bearer of the bad news. She sucked a shaky breath in.

“Get out,” she whispered. “I don’t want to see you right now. Just leave me alone.”

Pursing my lips, I turned around and walked towards the exit. I knew I would no longer be invited into her home once I told her everything. Once I reached the door, I glanced over my shoulder and looked at her one last time.

“I am sorry,” I said and walked away.

“That went okay,” Mira remarked. “At least she didn’t call the police or scream or something like that.”

I sighed as I picked up the phone and sent her the video. Although she didn’t ask for it, I wanted her to have it.

I stared at the screen. I saw that she opened the message, but then I suddenly got blocked. A humourless chuckle escaped my lips when I realised I could no longer send her messages.

“Well, let’s go back, Mira. We have done our part.”

Six months passed by with no news from Kathy. Life went on. With three pups to take care of, I was extremely busy. Although I never forgot Kathy, I stopped spending time to think about her. So when my phone rang with her name on the screen, I was taken aback. I quickly answered the phone without thinking twice.

“Hello?” I answered, not knowing what to expect.

“Hey, Kaya.”

Silence followed. At least she didn’t sound hostile.

“Hey, Kathy. Nice to hear from you,” I said.

I heard a sigh. “Yeah. I just wanted to let you know that they found him.”

I frowned. “Huh?”

“They found his car. It was badly burnt, and he didn’t survive.”

My lips parted. “Oh. I’m sorry.”

I heard a forced laughter. “Actually, Kaya. It has been a long time since I have been thinking about calling you. I did a lot of thinking when you left that night and was waiting to confront him when he returned. He never did. I assumed he ran away. I guess the bastard died.”

So she believed me.

My lips pursed together. “You deserve better, Kathy. I am sorry he did that to you.”

“Yeah. Me too. I always wanted to conceive. I guess that’s not happening anymore.”

I closed my eyes and sunk to the couch in our room. “We can try to heal you. He used a herbal elixir to hurt you. Perhaps our medicine can heal?”

There was a short pause. “Really?”

I wasn’t sure how to execute it, but perhaps my bite could heal her.

“We can try,” I said.

“Wow. Of course, I would like that.”

**Five years later**

“Kaya, I am pregnant!”

Kathy almost screamed into the phone. A broad smile spread across my face as soon as I heard the news. Five years had passed since I met her with some of the medicinal mixtures our healers came up with. Tricking her into letting me bite her was the hard part. Although she was a little pissed at me, she let it slide since by the time I did it, we were pretty close. And two years ago, she met an awesome young man, closer to her age. Of course I did some digging to find out if we could trust him. When I found out he was decent enough to date her, I let them be.

“That’s great! I am so happy for you! It worked!”

“I know! Thank you so much, Kaya. I would love to visit your place some day. Your culture sounds interesting,” she said.

I face palmed. Although I loved her company, I didn’t think letting a human into the wolf’s territory was a great idea.

“Yeah. Some day,” I said, cringing. If she really wanted to travel into the woods, perhaps we could arrange something. “We would have a lot of fun.”

“Yes! Got to go, hun. Talk later? I am at the hospital right now. My doctor is shocked I healed,” she said.

I smirked. Of course they would be shocked.

The call ended, and I sat in silence in my room. A smile curled on my lips. Five years of peace had passed. It felt good to think that I played a major role in saving several lives. As the Luna of a wolf pack, I knew that tranquillity wasn’t forever. There would always be battles we would have to fight. Some of them would be internal, while others would be more challenging. At least we had time to catch our breath.

I hummed to myself as I left the room to check on my pups. I left them in the dining room to have some snacks. Helena and I were going to take them for a walk in the woods in the evening. They needed to be energised for that. I heard their excited chatter as I got closer.

“You know what? Mommy didn’t give birth to you. Daddy laid eggs,” my daughter said.

“What?” I heard Archie.

“Yeah. You came from an egg,” she said.

I leaned closer to hear their conversation.

“How would you know? You are only five!”

She and Ethan giggled. I held back a chuckle and listened to them.

“Well, you both came from the dumpster. I know because I am older!”

“You all are crazy.” I heard Zian’s voice.

I wanted to laugh, but I had to put on a serious face before walking inside.

“Mommy! Archie says we came from the dumpster!” My daughter complained.

“She said I came from an egg!”

I smiled at my pups. “You all are mine. No one came from an egg or the dumpster. Now who likes ice cream? I am thinking of getting some ice cream on the way out.”

Helena, Penny, and I walked with the pups in the wilderness. We walked towards the ruins of my old pack, and once we reached it, I halted at the main entrance.

“Wow! This place looks so cool!” Zian exclaimed. He and Archie ran towards the broken walls and the burnt-down structures as the younger pups followed their lead.

Seeing the ruins still aroused raw emotions in my heart, but they weren’t as intense as they used to be. That place not only held the cries of my pack members and my parents. It now held the last screams of the one who betrayed them.

Penny stepped closer to me as Helena placed her hand on my shoulder. “Are you okay?” Penny asked.

I nodded my head as I watched the pups climb the broken structures. I smiled. They knew nothing. Perhaps it was best it stayed that way.

I could say that we were at peace.
