Chapter 67 Who Sent You?
Rebecca woke up with a start. At first, she did not understand where she was. Her head hurt badly, pounding with a dull ache that made her feel sick.
Her body felt stiff and sore, like she had been lying in the same position for a long time. The air around her was thick and smelled strange, like metal, oil, and dust.
She opened her eyes but her vision felt as if she hadn't opened them at all.
There was complete darkness everywhere and for a moment, her heart skipped.
She blinked several times, but nothing changed, everywhere was still in total darkness.
“Where am I?” she whispered, her heart beating rapidly.
"Hello?" she whispered, her voice hoarse and weak, a clear indication of how thirsty she was.
There was absolutely no answer, so she tried again but there was still no answer.
She tried to move her arms, but they hit something hard on both sides. There was barely any space, her knees were bent tightly against her chest, and her back was pressed against a cold surface.
Panic crept into her chest slowly as she began to think about everything that had happened .
Her heart beat rose and she kept shaking her head, telling herself it wasn't what she was thinking.
But the more she shook her head, and tried freeing herself, the more it dawned on her that she might have truly been kidnapped.
Then the memory suddenly came crashing into her mind. The argument with Derek, her storming off, the men approaching her, her struggle and then the total darkness afterwards.
What had she done to them? Who were those men? What did they want from her? Did she know them? Was there an history between them?
She was still thinking when the truck she was in hit a bump, causing her to wrap her hand protectively round her stomach, even though she was in potential danger. She was still tasked with the responsibility of making sure her child was fine.
The thought that she was kidnapped twisted her heart painfully and her eyes started glistening with unshed tears.
Where were they taking her? What did they want? Was this a mistake or they really wanted her? What for? Who were they? She kept asking herself, as she tried very unsuccessfully to keep tears from gathering in her eyes.
But the more she thought about it, the more tears gathered and before she knew it, tears were already flowing.
She thought about Derek, her tears flowed even more. Will he even know she was missing? Will he even care to look for her, or will he assume she had gone back home in anger?
She should have just told him the truth, she reasoned, maybe if only she had told him, they would have talked and maybe, just maybe she wouldn't have found herself in this predicament.
Maybe she wouldn't have gone out in anger and they wouldn't have seen her to kidnap.
As she was thinking, the vehicle suddenly slowed down. Her body shifted as the car turned, then stopped completely. The humming sound disappeared, leaving behind a heavy, terrifying silence.
She held her breath and listened.
She could hear voices now. Muffled. Male voices. Close.
Her heart began racing again.
"No… no… please…" she whispered, as she wrapped her hand tighter around her stomach.
Then... before she knew it, she heard a loud click andight flooded in as the boot opened abruptly.
Rebecca gasped, squinting against the sudden brightness. Cool air rushed in, filling her lungs, but it did nothing to calm her fear.
Two men stood over her as she looked up and froze.
They were strangers. Their faces hard, and unreadable. One of them, the shorter one with a knife scar running down his cheek, smirked slightly, while the other, the taller and less scary one simply stared at her like she was just an object.
Her body trembled violently.
"This can’t be happening," she whispered, shaking her head.
Even though she'd thought about it, she'd hoped that somehow, she hadn't been adopted but looking at them, all her hopes were thrown into the sea.
The man closest to her grabbed her arm roughly and pulled her out. She cried out as her feet hit the ground unsteadily.
"Let go of me,"she screamed, panic exploding inside her.
She stumbled, nearly falling, but they held her upright. Her breathing was wild now, tears streaming down her face uncontrollably.
"Who are you?" She cried. "What do you want from me?"
Her voice cracked as she spoke, fear raw and uncontrollable.
"Please," she sobbed. "I didn’t do anything."
The men said nothing, the taller one among them was busy chatting with someone, while the shorter one wrapped his hand round her waist.
The shorter one scoffed.
"Shut her up," the other said coldly.
Rebecca shook her head wildly. "No, no please, let me go. You've got the wrong person."
The taller one glanced at her and scoffed. “Says who? We got exactly who we wanted,” he said and took a picture of Rebecca, sending it to the person he was chatting with.
Rebecca shallowed, fear gripping her. Someone sent them to kidnap her. Who was it?
"Please," she whispered, already feeling her energy drained. "Please… I’ll do anything. Just let me go."
Her mind raced wildly, as she thought of who could possibly kidnap her and why. Is this because of Derek? She thought. Was it a business rival of his that was trying to hurt him through her, or does someone know about her baby and wants to harm it?
"If this is about my husband," she said shakily, "he has money. He can pay. He’ll pay anything you want, we will double the money you were promised." She pleaded desperately, not for herself but for her child and for Derek.
The men exchanged a quick look.
Rebecca noticed it, and it only deepened her her fear.
"I’ll do anything," she cried. "Anything you want. Just don’t hurt me. Please." She cried with tears streaming down her face when they said nothing.
She swallowed and opened her mouth to speak again but the shorter one stopped her.
“I’ll shut you up if you utter one more word,” he said, his voice deep and scary.
That didn't stop Rebecca. "I'll shut up but can you please, just tell me who sent you? What do they want from me? What did I do to deserve——"
She was still saying when a hand suddenly clamped over her mouth.
She screamed, but the sound was muffled. Her body went rigid with terror as she struggled, her heart pounding so violently she felt dizzy.
"Be quiet," the shorter one whispered harshly. "If you don’t want to get hurt."
Her heart pounded so hard she felt dizzy. Tears soaked her cheeks as she nodded frantically.
The hand was removed.
She sucked in air desperately, sobbing quietly.
The taller one grabbed her arm again, pulling her away from the shorter one roughly.
"Move," he said coldly.
She stumbled as they dragged her along, her legs barely able to carry her weight. Every step felt heavy, painful, terrifying.
Tears streamed freely down her face as fear wrapped around her completely.
She didn’t know where they were taking her.
She didn’t know why this was happening.
She didn’t know where they were taking her.
But one thing was clear....
Her life, and her child’s life, were now in terrible danger.
