Chapter 50 Two Can Play

Chapter 50 Two Can Play
Rebecca drove away from Derek’s office slowly.

The road in front of her was busy, but her mind was not on the traffic. It was still inside that office, replaying everything that had happened between her and Derek. The surprise on Derek’s face when he saw her. The way his employees looked at her when she had introduced herself as his wife. The meeting. The contract signing. The way he had smiled at her when everything ended well.

And most of all, the compliment.

'You look perfect and beautiful.'

Rebecca shook her head slightly as she drove. She didn’t understand why those words were still sitting so deeply in her heart. It was just a compliment. She had heard compliments before many times, but none had made her heart react the way it did today.

It annoyed her, confused her and it scared her a little. Her mind flashed back to what Amelia had said.

She can't have fallen in love with him, she thought as she shook her head again.

Her chest felt tight as She placed one hand over her stomach unconsciously, then quickly removed it as if she had been caught doing something wrong.

"This is not real," she whispered to herself. "It’s just a contract. Just acting."

But no matter how much she told herself that, her heart didn’t seem to listen. She sighed and focused on the road or at least she tried to.

Lost in thought, she didn’t notice when the traffic light ahead turned red.

By the time she realized what was happening, it was too late.

Her car hit the one in front of her.

It wasn’t a hard crash, but it was enough to make her gasp loudly and slam her foot on the brake.

"Oh no," she muttered, panic rushing through her. “Not again!”

She pulled her car to the side of the road quickly and turned off the engine. Her hands were shaking as she opened the door and stepped out already preparing an apology speech.

The other car driver also pulled to the side of the road before the door opened.

The man stepped out.

Rebecca raised her head and froze.

"Liam?" she said, shock written all over her face. "It’s you?"

Liam looked just as surprised at first, but that surprise quickly turned into something else. Something cold and sharp.

"So it’s really you," he said slowly, looking her up and down in disgust and mockery. "I should’ve guessed."

Rebecca crossed her arms over her chest, her apology speech long forgotten. "I wasn’t paying attention. I’m sorry about your car."

He laughed, but there was no humor in it. "Still clumsy and careless," he said. "Just like before."

Rebecca frowned before asking. "And what’s that supposed to mean?"

Liam stepped closer, his eyes dark. "I mean you're always careless and clumsy. You can't drive well, cheat well or do anything well at all. That's why you got pregnant for another man while we were still dating and pretending to be innocent. Cheating on me and then acting like you did nothing wrong."

Rebecca felt her anger rise instantly. How dare he accuse her of cheating when he had been the one cheating on her with someone she called her sister.

Her body stiffened but loosened up when another thought crossed her mind and she narrowed her eyes.

She looked at him and smirked. “I see," she said coldly. "So she didn’t tell you."

Liam blinked surprised. "Tell me what? And who's she?"

Rebecca laughed, but it was a bitter sound. "I see there's trouble between you and Vanessa seeing as you still don't know anything."

Liam’s face tightened. "What are you talking about? What trouble and what has Vanessa got to do with this? What don't I know?"

She tilted her head slightly and shook her head, clearly enjoying his confusion. “Feels good to see you this confused and frustrated.”

"Stop talking in circles," Liam snapped, his patience thinned. "If you have something to say, say it clearly. That’s the only thing you’ve ever been good at beating around the bush instead of speaking straight." He said frustratedly.

Rebecca stared at him for a moment, then nodded slowly. She was enjoying this, seeing him curious and agitated was making her happy.

"Fine," she said. "Since you're so agitated, I'll tell you. I know about you and Vanessa. I know everything."

Liam’s face went pale.

"What do you mean? What about me and Vanessa?" he asked quickly.

“You still think I'm lying? I mean, think about it. Why do you think I broke up with you?  I wonder why she just didn't tell you I know. Maybe she has other plans for you, who knows?” Rebecca shook her head.

“You don't know what you're talking about. You're just lying,” Liam said, trying not to believe her.

"If I were you, instead of bothering myself with whether or not I'm lying, I'll be more bothered about why Vanessa kept the fact that she knows I knew about you two to herself," Rebecca replied calmly, "If she wasn't entertaining other thoughts, she would’ve told you already. But she didn’t, did she?"

Liam opened his mouth, then closed it again.

Rebecca continued, her voice steady. "The fact that she didn’t tell you means something is wrong between you two. And honestly? I’m glad."

She stepped closer now, her eyes burning. "After everything you both did to me, it feels good to know you’re turning against each other. You both know how to fight and destroy things. At least now you’re doing it to yourselves and maybe you’ll destroy yourselves the way you tried to destroy me."

Liam clenched his fists. Anger filled his chest, but behind it was something worse, doubt.

As Rebecca turned and walked back to her car, Liam stood there, replaying her words over and over in his mind.

Vanessa’s visit, her coldness, her lack of interest when he had tried touching her, then her obsession with Derek's Grandfather.

'She’s using me,' he thought bitterly. 'She’s always been using me.'

He thought back to how she had approached him, if not for her he would have been the father of Rebecca's child, he would have been married to her and inherited everything her father had left behind.

But because of Vanessa, he's here, jobless and single. Well two can play this game.

A dangerous idea began to form in his head.

Without another word, Liam returned to his car. He slammed the door shut, his jaw tight with anger as he pulled out his phone and dialed a number.

"I need you to follow someone,” he said into the phone after the call connected. “I’ll send you her details."

He didn’t know one thing. Vanessa had already done the same.
