Chapter 274 274 The Miracle in the Doctor’s Office 2
They arrived at the hospital and headed to Dr Rosenberg’s office. Levi and Meadow went for separate tests, then returned to wait. The hour that followed felt longer than it should have. Ethan watched Meadow the whole time, his worry sitting openly on his face. Meadow leaned against him quietly, tired and warm, while Levi sat with a different kind of tension in his body. He was waiting for his own result too, but there was a strange sharpness in his eyes, almost like he wanted the test to find something.
Dr Rosenberg finally returned with two envelopes. He was not smiling, and Ethan’s heart dropped. Fear hit him immediately. If something terrible had happened to Meadow, if she had been poisoned too, he would not wait for explanations before tearing the culprit apart.
The doctor sat behind his desk and prepared himself.
“Your blood tested positive for vinyl chloride and polychlorinated biphenyls,” Dr Rosenberg said, looking at Levi.
Levi went still.
Those were the same substances that had damaged Amber’s liver. In that instant, he knew. He knew who had been poisoning his wife.
Instead of looking sad or afraid, Levi smiled. The smile widened slowly, and it was so out of place that Dr Rosenberg frowned. Ethan and Meadow stared at him too, confused. Why would anyone smile after finding poison in his blood?
“Luckily, it is a small amount, and your wolf can expel it,” the doctor added.
Levi nodded, still smiling.
“That bitch,” Levi muttered.
His mind went straight to Kate. Quiet old Kate. A staff member who had worked at the mansion for fourteen years. Why had he not suspected her? She rarely served them directly, but sometimes Amber would request a drink or food from her because she was familiar, quiet and seemingly harmless. Levi had tested all the staff through his little trap, and now, after drinking orange juice Kate had claimed was meant for Amber, the poison had finally shown.
He would enjoy getting the truth from her. He needed to know why she would do that to her Luna. More importantly, he needed to know who put her up to it.
Levi looked at Ethan and grinned.
“I think we have caught the bitch that has been poisoning Amber,” he said.
Ethan realised what had happened at once.
“Since we returned, I have fed Amber food from your kitchen, but I have ordered the staff in my wing to make us something to eat every night. I would not feed Amber the food, but I would taste it and come for a test in the morning since Dr Rosenberg said he wasn’t equipped to detect the poison in the food unless ingested. The test has been negative until now. Kate served us orange juice last night,” Levi said.
Ethan gasped. Kate had been with them for years. She came to work for them shortly after their father died and had remained there ever since. She was quiet, never got into trouble, never drew attention to herself. Why would she do this to Amber? Their mother had been a kind Luna. Even after Cain died and her smiles became rare, she still treated the staff fairly. Ethan’s anger stirred, hot and sharp, but he trusted Levi to handle the matter. He would not deny a man revenge for his mate.
Dr Rosenberg gave Levi medication to help clear the poison from his system. The amount was small, so there was nothing to worry about.
“Ethan, you and your brother should let me handle this,” Levi said.
Ethan nodded. He had already made that decision. This was Levi’s fight. Amber was his mate. The betrayal had happened under their roof, and the person responsible deserved whatever Levi decided to do after he got answers.
Once they were done with Levi’s result, Dr Rosenberg returned to his chair and looked at Meadow. This time, a smile softened his face.
Ethan became nervous and relieved at the same time. The smile was a good sign, but he did not trust anything until the words were spoken.
“Congratulations, Luna. You are four weeks pregnant,” Dr Rosenberg said.
Ethan exclaimed with pure joy. The news hit him so hard that he forgot everything else. He forgot the wheelchair. Forgot the secret. Forgot Levi was standing right there. He got up, lifted Meadow gently and spun her around in his arms.
Meadow gasped and clung to him, stunned by the news and by his sudden joy. Ethan laughed, holding her like she was carrying the whole moon inside her. For a few seconds, nothing else mattered. Not Cynthia. Not poison. Not the hidden Alpha. Not the danger waiting around them. Meadow was pregnant. Their child was already growing inside her.
Dr Rosenberg cleared his throat.
The sound dragged Ethan back to reality. His legs were meant to be a secret. He stopped at once and sat back down, his joy crashing into the shock on Levi’s face.
Levi stared at him.
Meadow was pregnant, and Ethan could walk. The two miracles had landed on him at the same time, and for a moment, he could not process either of them.
“Since when?” Levi finally asked.
Ethan looked at him and knew there was no way around it now. So he told him everything. The silver. Meadow’s idea. The secret shifting. Echo working through the damage. The progress. The lake. Keith. Joseph. The plan to keep it quiet because they needed the element of surprise.
When Ethan finished, Levi looked hurt. He tried to hide it, but Ethan saw through him. Levi felt like an outsider. He had raised them, protected them, sacrificed for them and stayed when many men would have walked away. To know they had kept something this big from him hurt more than he wanted to admit. It made him wonder what else they were hiding. It made him wonder if they still suspected him somehow, even after everything he had done.
Levi did not want to spoil the happy moment for the couple, so he congratulated them. His voice was calm enough, but Ethan could see the wound beneath it. He understood it too. And the understanding made the guilt worse.
“I am sorry,” Ethan said.
Levi looked at him.
“I have no excuse for keeping this from you. I did not see the damage it would cause. I have other things to tell you, but I hope you will find it in your heart to forgive me,” Ethan said.
His voice carried real remorse, and Meadow looked between the men quietly.
“Joseph and I truly appreciate all you have done for our mother and us. We wouldn’t be alive if it weren’t for you, and we wouldn’t have a home if it weren’t for you. You stepped in when it mattered most, Levi. We will always be grateful for that.”
Levi’s jaw tightened.
“We have known you longer than we knew our father, and you have earned the right to be our father. It was wrong for me to keep this from you. I once again apologise,” Ethan said.
Levi let the hurt go, or at least placed it aside. He did not want anything to spoil the moment. Meadow was pregnant. Ethan was walking. Amber was alive. For once, the good news was bigger than the pain.
“Amber will be thrilled that Meadow is pregnant,” Levi said.
It was his way of letting Ethan know they were all right.
They rejoiced in the hospital, and even though Ethan wanted badly to carry Meadow bridal style out of the office, he forced himself to behave. He settled for pulling her onto his lap and using the wheelchair to take her out, his arms wrapped around her as if she and the baby were already the centre of his whole world.
He hoped the hidden Alpha would show up already so they could get it over with.
