Chapter 43 The Hunt Begins

Chapter 43 The Hunt Begins
Luna’s POV

The city seemed calmer now, almost peaceful after the storm of the alley…But I knew better. Danger was still out there, like a predator circling just beyond the light. Kai and I moved silently through the streets, as shadows stretching behind us, blending with the night.

Kai kept a protective hand near my shoulder, not touching, but close enough that I felt the familiar hum of his power radiate through me. My own energy pulsed under my skin, still restless, and still raw from the alley. I had expected exhaustion to overtake me…but my rush of feelings had other plans.

“We need information,” Kai said, voice low. “He won’t just strike blindly. Ethan plans, and he leaves traces.”

I nodded, feeling the shadows around me coil slightly, almost as if they understood. “I can feel his energy. It’s like a scent… faint, but it’s there.”
Kai’s eyes narrowed. “Good. Lead the way.”

We turned down a narrow side street. Neon signs flickered above abandoned shops, casting red and green light across puddles and broken glass. My shadows moved ahead, brushing against walls, seeking, probing, and listening.

“Here,” I whispered, stopping. My fingers traced the air, and the shadows stiffened. There…a faint shimmer on the brick wall, almost invisible in the dim light. A residue of Ethan’s power. He had been here recently.

Kai crouched beside me, his eyes scanning the ground. “He’s testing us,” he said, tone rough. “Not just with Tyler, not just at the school. He wants to see how fast we react.”

I let my hands hover over the wall, letting my shadows crawl over the faint marks. I felt it immediately: the echo of his presence, cold and sharp, like broken glass under my skin.

“He’s here,” I murmured. “Not now… but close. He’s watching, waiting for us to make a mistake.”

Kai’s jaw tightened. “Then we don’t make mistakes. We find him first.”

The city streets grew emptier as we moved, the occasional honk of a distant car or bark of a stray dog punctuating the silence. The night air smelled of rain, asphalt, and something else… something acrid and metallic. I flinched. The shadows around me stiffened, reacting instinctively.

“There,” I whispered again. A narrow alleyway between two abandoned warehouses. The faintest glow of movement shimmered at the far end.
Kai’s hand tightened around my wrist. “Stay close.”

We moved together, silent as ghosts. My shadows flowed ahead like scouts, brushing against crates and dumpsters, slipping through cracks in the walls. Ethan’s energy was stronger here. He wasn’t just hiding…he was waiting, prepared for us.

As we rounded a corner, a figure stepped out from the darkness. Tyler. Or what Tyler had become under Ethan’s control. His movements were jerky, unnatural, and his eyes glowed faintly in the shadows.

“Kai,” I hissed, but it was too late.

Tyler lunged at us, faster than I expected. I barely had time to react, summoning my shadows like steel whips. They struck him mid-air, sending him crashing against a dumpster. His body hit the metal with a deafening clang, but he struggled to rise.

Kai didn’t hesitate. He pounced, shifting partially, claws extended, eyes burning. Tyler tried to fight back, but it was clear even he was fighting against Ethan’s control.

“Luna!” Kai barked, and I moved immediately, extending my shadows to hold Tyler down. The mist of darkness that had infected him at the school shimmered and twisted in my grasp. My power flared in response to his resistance, and I felt a pulse of energy reverberate through my veins.
“He’s draining him!” Kai growled, and I realized Tyler’s energy was feeding Ethan, connecting them. “You have to stop it!”

I forced my shadows deeper, wrapping them around Tyler in intricate coils. He screamed, a sound both human and unnatural, and the mist separating from him shimmered, hesitated, and then pulled back. My shadows absorbed it, writhing, humming with the energy I’d just taken in.

Tyler collapsed, unconscious but alive. I let my shadows retreat slowly, exhausted but satisfied. Kai landed beside me, panting. His wolf instincts flared for a moment, sharp and protective, before he regained control.
“He’s close,” Kai muttered, voice low. “Ethan’s watching us now. He’s going to escalate, and he’s going to be ready for the next step.”

I shivered. “And we’ll be ready too. We have to be.”

Kai’s eyes softened, but only for a moment. “Luna… this isn’t just about protecting you. It’s about stopping him before more people get caught.”

I nodded, swallowing the lump in my throat. The weight of everything—the Blood Moon, Tyler, Ethan, the shadows…pressed on me, but I couldn’t let fear control me. Not now. Not ever.

We moved out of the alley, disappearing into the night. The city stretched ahead, dark and dangerous, alive with unseen threats. But for the first time, I felt something solid, like a plan forming, and a purpose beyond survival.

Ethan had started this hunt…but we were about to turn the tables.

And this time, he wouldn’t see us coming.
