Chapter 30 Night of Sparkling Secrets
The next day at school, the gym glittered under strings of golden lights, each one casting tiny sparkles across the polished tiled floor. Glitter, ribbons, and balloons crowded the corners, the air buzzing with excitement and the faint hum of the speaker testing music. Crescent Valley High had never looked so alive. And yet, for me, it all felt… too loud, and too bright. My senses were on high alert, picking up too many whispers, and too many shadows.
“Luna, over here!” whispered Marcy, waving frantically while balancing a stack of streamers. I forced a smile and hurried over, juggling the ribbons, trying to focus on something normal. But my mind kept drifting. Kai had been unusually quiet this morning, he was watching me from across the gym, with his jaw tight, and his eyes scanning every corner like he expected trouble.
Not that I could blame him. My instincts screamed that tonight wasn’t going to be simple.
“Hey,” he murmured, stepping beside me as I adjusted the streamers. His hand touched mine, deliberate, and grounding. “Stay close.”
“I…yeah,” I said, my heart stuttering as his gaze swept the room. His presence was comforting and suffocating at the same time, and I realized he wasn’t just protective, he was possessive in the way that made butterflies explode in my chest. He reached down, carefully straightening a strand of my silver hair that had fallen across my face. “You’re mine tonight,” he said quietly, almost to himself, but I felt the weight of it. My stomach fluttered, but a part of me stiffened at the intensity.
Before I could reply, the gym doors squeaked open. Ethan appeared, looking casual in a dark blazer that somehow made him blend into the shadows. His hazel eyes glinted in the string lights, warm on the surface but sharp underneath. He gave me a smile, it was easy, and charming…But I couldn’t shake the strange tension it carried, the feeling that he was watching more than he let on.
“Need a hand?” he asked, moving toward the punch table. He nudged it slightly, enough to tip a few cups of juice, but he caught them just in time with an almost practiced motion. I blinked at him. Too precise, and too intentional. He chuckled. “Oops.”
I felt my powers tingle, like a subtle vibration through the air. Something about him didn’t feel right. And yet, Kai seemed oblivious, tightening his grip on my arm as though daring anyone to try trouble.
As the night wore on, small dramas bubbled up, like Marcy and Jenna arguing over who got the best spot for the photo backdrop, a vase of glittering flowers toppled narrowly missing a cluster of balloons, and the music cut out for a split second, leaving an awkward silence.
“Technical glitch,” muttered one of the students, but my instincts told me it wasn’t. My pulse quickened, and I felt the familiar hum of energy shift around me. The lights flickered again, with shadows stretching unnaturally across the gym floor.
Kai leaned closer, murmuring in my ear, “Something’s off. Don’t let your guard down.”
I nodded, feeling the buzz of my powers like static under my skin. And then I saw him…Ethan. He was leaning casually against the side wall, watching the crowd with a faint, and unreadable smile. But his eyes… they weren’t friendly. There was a darkness behind them, subtle but undeniable, like he was enjoying the chaos in a way no one else could see.
A sudden crash made everyone jump. A string of balloons fell near the stage, scattering across the floor, and the speakers let out a screeching feedback before cutting entirely. Panic rippled through the students. Whispers flew. Marcy shrieked, “Who did that?”
Kai’s eyes narrowed instantly, and he moved closer to me, positioning himself like a shield. “Stay calm,” he said, with his voice low and urgent. “Watch him.”
“Who?” I asked, glancing around.
His jaw tightened. “Don’t…don’t get distracted. Just…watch.”
Ethan appeared again, far too conveniently near the fallen decorations, adjusting the tablecloth as if he’d been helping all along. But the way he moved, was deliberate, silent, and precise… it made my skin crawl. He glanced at me, and that same smile flickered across his lips, knowing, and secret.
I could feel my powers stirring, and alert, as if warning me of the threat I couldn’t fully name yet. Shadows along the edges of the gym flickered in response, bending slightly toward me. My chest tightened with the pull of energy, sensing Ethan’s subtle manipulation and something I couldn’t fully understand.
Kai noticed it too. He grabbed my hand, and his fingers tightened around mine. “Luna,” he hissed, “don’t try anything. Not yet. We need to see what he’s doing.”
I wanted to protest, I wanted to reach out, but I obeyed. There was a chill behind his warning, one that made me realize how serious this could get.
Ethan wasn’t just mischievous… He was dangerous.
The DJ finally got the music back on, and the gym erupted into clapping and laughter, trying to forget the small chaos. Students began dancing, the glittering lights reflecting in the polished floor. I tried to calm my racing thoughts, but I couldn’t shake the feeling of Ethan’s eyes on me, always there, and always calculating.
Kai leaned close, touching my hair back from my face again. “Dance with me,” he murmured, low and possessive. “And don’t let him near you.”
My heart jumped, and I felt a rush of warmth and adrenaline. I nodded, letting him pull me into the small space near the edge of the dance floor. He moved like a shadow, protective, and unrelenting. Every step we took, every subtle touch, was filled with unspoken words, like stay safe, I won’t let anything happen, I’m obsessed with you.
Ethan’s shadow lingered at the edge of the gym, watching, and calculating.
He made no move, but the energy around him shifted, darker, and more subtle. My instincts flared again, a warning I didn’t fully understand. He was hiding something, something dangerous, and I could feel it even if I couldn’t name it.
As we danced, the music swelled, and the lights reflected off the gym mirrors.
Laughter and chatter filled the air, but I felt the undercurrent…Ethan’s influence…and my powers pulsed faintly in response. Kai’s hand remained firm on my waist, his other hand clasping mine. He leaned close enough that I could feel his breath, low and steady, murmuring words only I could hear.
“You’re not going to leave my side tonight,” he said, almost a growl. “No one touches you. Not him… Not anyone.”
I shivered, not from the cold, but from the intensity, the possessiveness, and undeniable pull of his feelings. And as much as I wanted to fight it, I let myself sink into the moment, trusting him, and needing him.
From the shadows, Ethan smiled, faintly, and almost imperceptibly. His eyes glinted in a way that chilled me, like he knew more than I did, and like tonight was only the beginning.
Prom was supposed to be a night of glitter, laughter, and music. But even as I swayed in Kai’s arms, I realized the truth, that…danger had already found us, and Ethan’s shadow stretched longer than anyone suspected.
And I, Luna Ashford, stood at the heart of it…caught between the boy who would protect me with everything, and the one who hid secrets I couldn’t yet see.
The night was sparkling, but shadows were already moving…
