Chapter 20 Fractured Alliances
The morning sun shone through the windows of Crescent Valley High, but the light didn’t reach me. I sat at my usual spot near the lockers, with my fingers tracing the edge of my books, and I felt the pain in my chest that hadn’t left since yesterday. The halls were alive with chatter, laughter, and gossip, but all I could hear was the echo of what had happened, the fight, Ethan’s sudden power, and Selene’s laughter.
I kept my head down, pretending as if I belonged here, like the last twenty-four hours hadn’t rewritten everything I thought I knew about friends, enemies, and myself.
“Luna.”
I froze. That voice, it was low and deliberate, it made the pain in my chest spike.
It was Kai.
He leaned against the locker across from mine, with his eyes scanning the hallway before flicking to me. Je looked calm, and composed, like he was perfectly in control. Dangerous, as always. I wanted to hate him for how he made me feel pulled, exposed, and undeniably alive, but I couldn’t.
“You okay?” His voice was quiet, but the edge of concern was unmistakable.
I forced a laugh. “Fine. Just… tired.”
He didn’t press further, he just offered that faint, knowing smirk, the one that made my chest seize. Then, before I could respond, the hall filled with the thunder of footsteps, it was Ethan.
My stomach dropped. I wasn’t sure I was ready for him, not after the night before. And yet, he came, walking with the same determined stride he always had, his hazel eyes scanning until they locked on mine.
“Luna,” he said, and his tone was soft, hesitant, almost like he was testing the waters.
I swallowed, gripping my books tighter. “Ethan.”
He stopped a step away, far enough to give me space, close enough that I could see the tension in his jaw.
“About last night… I...”
“Don’t.” My voice was sharp, and cutting before I could think better of it. “Don’t tell me what I already know.”
He flinched, but didn’t retreat. “I didn’t mean for it to happen like that. I didn’t want to...”
“You didn’t want to what?” I asked, my voice softer now, but edged with suspicion. “Show me you’ve been hiding something all this time? Or scare me half to death?”
“I...” He stopped, struggling. The hall around us buzzed, with students oblivious to the tension between the three of us. “I didn’t mean to… I can explain. I will explain.”
Before either of us could continue, a sharp laugh cut through the hall. Selene... Of course. She leaned against the wall near the cafeteria entrance, with her arms crossed, the familiar smirk on her face was like a blade drawn just for me.
“Aw, look at this,” she said, her voice sounded sweet, loud enough for a few passing students to glance our way. “Trouble in paradise?”
I could feel Kai’s gaze sharpen behind me, protective, and a warning I didn’t need him to say.
Ethan shifted, stepping slightly between Selene and me, though his hesitation was evident.
I wanted to push both of them away. I wanted to run. But instead, I just lifted my chin.
“Not now, Selene,” I said, trying to keep my voice even, controlled.
Selene tilted her head, and her eyes glinted. “Oh, it’s always now with you, Luna. Always hiding, always pretending you’re normal. But guess what? I saw something last night too.”
My pulse jumped. She knew. My stomach twisted.
Kai stepped forward slightly. “Careful,” he said, his voice low, and it carried a predatory edge. “Don’t push her.”
Selene ignored him, letting a moment of silence stretch, savoring the power she held by simply standing there.
“Secrets have a way of showing themselves. Funny, isn’t it? Some of us can’t hide who we really are.”
Her gaze lingered on me, sharp and knowing, before she finally turned and walked away, with the echo of her laughter trailing behind her.
I exhaled, my legs were suddenly weak. Ethan placed a hand on my shoulder. “You okay?”
I shook it off. “I’ll be fine,” I said, though the lie sounded empty even to me.
Kai didn’t move. He just watched her leave, the tension in his body coiling, and ready. His eyes flicked to me. “You need to be careful,” he said, low enough for only me to hear. “She won’t stop, not until she knows exactly what you’re capable of.”
“I know,” I murmured. My voice was barely a whisper, but the weight of it sat heavily in my chest.
The day passed in a blur of ordinary tasks and hidden anxiety. Classes dragged on, with the chatter of students around me a meaningless mumble as my mind replayed Selene’s words.
Ethan stayed close, quiet, and apologetic, and yet I couldn’t trust him fully...not until he explained, not until I knew why he had powers I didn’t understand.
Kai, of course, stayed his usual distance, offering a small, and fleeting gesture of care, an extra glance, a brush of hands in the hallway, a presence that grounded me even as it teased at the tension simmering between us.
By lunch, I was sitting alone in the cafeteria, trying to eat without thinking, when Ethan slid into the seat across from me.
“We need to talk,” he said, his voice low, and urgent.
I folded my arms. “I think we already tried that.”
“No, really.” His eyes were earnest, and pleading. “I can’t tell you everything here, not where everyone can overhear. But I can tell you this… I didn’t choose this power. And I didn’t choose to put you in danger. But now that it’s here, we need to figure it out. Together.”
“Together?” I echoed, my voice dripping with skepticism. “You want us to trust each other after last night?”
He nodded. “I don’t expect you to forgive me... Not yet.
But I need you to believe me when I say I’m on your side. Always.”
The sincerity in his eyes was impossible to ignore, and despite everything, a small part of me wanted to believe him. But another part, the part that remembered betrayal and fear, shouted at me to step back.
Kai’s presence in my mind was a silent reminder, a steady connection keeping me from tipping too far into either extreme. I glanced toward the window, and for a fleeting second, the shadows in the hall seemed to twitch. My instincts prickled, that someone was watching.
I turned slowly, scanning the cafeteria. At the edge of my vision, a figure leaned against the doorway, with its arms crossed, and a phone glinting in its hand. Recording? Observing? My stomach twisted. Whoever it was, they’d seen something they shouldn’t have.
Ethan stiffened beside me, noticing my gaze. “Who...”
Before I could finish, the bell rang, and the hall erupted into motion. Students flooded out, with laughter and shoving, lockers slamming. I stayed seated, with my heart hammering, and my mind racing.
Kai appeared in the doorway, silent as ever, his eyes scanning. When they met mine, there was no question, he knew. The bond between us pulsed faintly, connecting me even as the world around us spun out of control.
I had friends, allies, and enemies all circling like predators. The forest wasn’t the danger anymore; it was here, in plain sight, where anyone could watch, record, and twist what they saw.
And suddenly, the cafeteria didn’t feel ordinary anymore. It was a battlefield, and every glance carried risk.
I looked at Ethan, and then Kai, and realized the truth I’d been trying to ignore; I couldn’t do this alone. Not anymore.
And someone, somewhere, had just caught a glimpse of the power I could no longer hide
e.
The next move would be mine, but every choice carried consequences I wasn’t sure I could survive.
