Chapter 157: The First Seal Break

Luna’s POV

The forest didn’t feel like it was collapsing anymore. It felt like it was deciding.

The ground below the cracked opening pulsed again, but slower this time. Controlled. Almost… patient. Like something enormous had realized it didn’t need to rush.

That thought made my stomach turn. Kai pulled me back another step. “Don’t look down.”

“I have to,” I whispered.

Because I could feel it now. Not just hear it and not just sense it.

I could feel it noticing me back.

Ethan wiped dirt from his mouth, still shaken. “Okay, I officially hate this place.”

Selene didn’t move. Her eyes stayed fixed on the crack. “That’s not a breach,” she said quietly.

Kai snapped his gaze to her. “What did you just say?”

Selene exhaled slowly, like she was choosing honesty for the first time.

“It’s not escaping,” she repeated. “It’s testing the surface response.”

A cold silence dropped between us and Kai’s grip tightened on my arm.

“…testing?” he said carefully.

Selene finally looked at him. “The Core doesn’t break seals randomly. It probes them. Learn where pressure is weakest.”

My chest tightened instantly. “So it’s…” I swallowed. “Thinking?”

Selene’s eyes flicked to me. “It always was.”

The ground below us trembled again…but differently now and less violent and more deliberate.

Like something below the earth had shifted its attention fully onto me.

A low vibration rolled through my bones and suddenly my knees weakened slightly. Kai noticed immediately. “Luna.”

“I’m okay,” I lied automatically.

But the truth was, I wasn’t sure what “okay” even meant anymore.

Because the mark under my collarbone wasn’t burning now.

It was responding. Rhythmically.

In time with the heartbeat below.

Ethan stepped closer, uneasy. “Why does it feel like it’s syncing with her?”

Selene answered without hesitation. “Because she’s not resisting anymore.”

My head snapped up. “I am resisting.”

“No,” she said calmly. “You’re adapting.”

Kai turned sharply toward me. “Luna, focus on me.”

I tried. I really did.

But the sound below the forest was louder now. It was not in my ears, it was inside my chest. Inside my breath.

Like something was gently pulling a thread tied directly to my heart.

A memory flashed. And a silver door with my hand on it. I was not opening it, i was unlocking it. I staggered.

Kai caught me again, frustration breaking through his control now. “What are you seeing?”

“I didn’t just open it,” I whispered.

Selene went still and Kai froze. Then Ethan frowned. “Open what?”

My voice shook. “I think I… started it.”

Silence hit like a physical force, that even the wind stopped moving.

Then…

The crack in the earth widened slightly.

Not violently. It was almost polite. As if confirming my words. Then Selene’s expression sharpened. “That changes the timeline.”

Kai looked at her sharply. “What timeline?”

She finally spoke like someone laying down a truth she couldn’t avoid anymore.

“The Core isn’t fully awake yet,” she said. “But Luna just triggered its awareness cycle.”

My breath caught and Kai’s voice dropped. “Meaning?”

Selene looked at me directly. “Meaning it knows your name now.”

The forest went cold. Not metaphorically, but the temperature dropped instantly and I felt my breath turned visible in the air.

And then something inside the crack moved closer slowly, heavy and intentional.

A shadow rose just below the surface, it was too large to understand fully, too defined to ignore and my pulse spiked.

“No…” I whispered.

Kai stepped in front of me instantly. “Stay behind me.”

But I couldn’t look away anymore. Because whatever was down there, it wasn’t just awakening.

It was responding to me specifically.

The mark on my chest flared again…but this time, instead of pain, I felt something else underneath it. It was recognition. It was like a lock turning.

Selene’s voice broke the silence.

“Don’t let it establish full synchronization.”

Kai shot her a look. “How?”

Her answer was immediate. “Sever the emotional anchor points.”

Ethan frowned. “What does that mean?”

But I already understood. I felt my stomach drop. Because I could feel it too.

Three threads and three pulls.

It was Kai, Ethan and Selene.

All of them tied into me in different ways. And below it all…

The Core was using those connections like pathways.

Kai stepped closer to me, voice lower now. urgent but controlled.

“Luna. Look at me.”

I did.

And for the first time tonight…The noise below the forest paused.

Like it was listening to him too and Kai noticed.

So did Selene.

Ethan looked between us. “Okay… why did it stop?”

Kai exhaled slowly.

“Because it’s learning how we affect her.”

My throat tightened. Then Selene nodded faintly. “Good. Then we can still contain the reaction cycle.”

Kai snapped at her. “We are not ‘containing’ her.”

“I didn’t say her,” Selene replied evenly. “I said the system.”

That distinction hit wrong in my chest. Because I realized something then, that none of them were talking about me like I was just a person anymore.

I was a point of access.

A threshold.

Something between worlds. Then the ground shifted again…but this time, it didn’t crack further. It was sealed slightly.

My eyes widened.

“…it’s closing?” I whispered.

Selene shook her head once. “No.”

She looked at me sharply. “It’s waiting for your next response.”

Kai went still beside me and Ethan cursed under his breath. “That sounds worse.”

It was. Because I understood what Selene meant.

This wasn’t an attack. It was a negotiation and the Core wasn’t breaking free yet.

It was studying me. And deciding what I was going to become.

The forest stilled completely again.

No wind, no sound and no heartbeat. There was just silence.

And in that silence, for the first time…I heard it clearly not as a sound, but as a thought forming under the ground.

LUNA ASHFORD.

My blood ran cold and Kai grabbed my hand instantly and Selene stepped back slightly for the first time.

Ethan looked like he was about to speak…but nothing came out. Because the moment my name was acknowledged by it…

Something inside me answered back, but not fully and not consciously. It was just enough.

A pulse, a connection tightening. And I realized, with terrifying clarity, that The Core didn’t just know I existed now.

It was waiting for me to respond properly. And whatever I chose next…

Would decide how much of it came up to meet me.
