Chapter 158: When the Forest Learns Your Voice

Luna’s POV

I didn’t speak. But something in me did, it was like a pressure behind my ribs tightened, and like my body had leaned forward without permission.

The moment it happened, the silence in the forest shifted, but was not broken.

It was like it answered.

Kai felt it instantly and his grip on my hand tightened. “Don’t,” he said quietly. Not a command, but a warning.

Ethan stepped closer, voice low. “What did she just do?”

“I didn’t do anything,” I whispered.

But even I didn’t believe that anymore. Because the ground under us reacted with a slow ripple that moved through the cracked earth, and it was like something below had exhaled in recognition.

Selene’s eyes narrowed. “It acknowledged her response.”

Kai snapped his head toward her. “Stop saying it like she’s a signal transmitter.”

Selene didn’t look away from the ground. “That’s exactly what she is becoming.”

My stomach twisted. “No,” I said quickly. “I’m not becoming anything.”

The mark under my collarbone pulsed once and hard. The forest answered immediately. And a second pulse rose from below.

Boom.

This time, the sound wasn’t just in my chest. It echoed in the air.

Ethan staggered back slightly. “Okay…yeah…nope. That’s new.”

Kai stepped closer to me, lowering his voice. “Luna, listen to me carefully.”

I forced myself to look at him and his expression had changed. Not fear and not confusion. It was a calculation. Like he had just made a decision he didn’t want to make.

“You need to stop reacting to it,” he said.

“I’m not reacting.”

“You are,” Selene cut in. “Every emotional spike, every instinct, every memory response…it’s mapping you.”

Kai shot her a sharp look. “Enough.”

But she didn’t stop.

“The Core doesn’t need force anymore,” she said quietly. “It just needs her pattern.”

My breath caught. “Pattern?”

Selene finally looked at me fully. “You’re not just bonded to it, Luna. You’re syncing with it.”

Silence hit. Heavier than before, and the forest didn’t feel like it was under us.

It felt like it was inside the conversation.

A faint vibration returned under my feet, but this time softer and more patient. And almost… curious. Kai tightened his jaw. “We need to stabilize her before it completes alignment.”

Ethan frowned. “And how exactly do we do that without, I don’t know, explaining what any of this even is?”

No one answered him. Because Selene stepped forward slightly, voice lowering.

“There are three anchors in her system response profile,” she said.

Kai’s eyes darkened immediately. “Don’t.”

But she continued anyway.

“Emotional anchoring,” she said. “One stabilizes her instinct. One destabilizes her. One corrupts the balance entirely.”

My chest tightened instantly. I already knew. Even before she said it.

Kai, Ethan and Selene.

I took a shaky step back. “No.”

Kai reached for me immediately. “Luna…don’t spiral.”

“I’m not spiraling!” My voice cracked harder than I meant it to.

The forest responded instantly. And a sharp pulse surged upward from below.

Pain shot through my skull. I gasped, dropping to one knee.

Kai caught me before I hit the ground. “Luna, be careful!”

My vision blurred. And for a second …I wasn’t here.

I was somewhere deeper below. Inside.

A vast chamber stretched endlessly under stone and silver light. And something massive moved behind sealed barriers. It was not attacking and not escaping. It was listening and waiting for direction.

A voice…not mine…echoed softly through the space.

ANCHOR DETECTED.

I snapped back into my body violently. Gasping.

Kai held me steady. “What did you see?”

My hands shook.

“It… it called me an anchor.”

Silence.

Even Ethan went quiet and Selene exhaled slowly. “So it’s already classifying her.”

Kai’s voice dropped dangerously. “Classifying her as what?”

Selene met his eyes. “The interface.”

The word landed like a blade and it felt as if my breath stopped.

“No,” I whispered. “I’m not that.”

But even as I said it…I felt it. The pull wasn’t just stronger anymore.

It was organized. Like something inside me had been sorted into pathways.

Emotion to reaction. Memory to trigger. Instinct to respond.

And the Core was watching every one of them like a scientist observing a living experiment.

Ethan stepped closer, unsettled. “Okay, I don’t like any of this. Not even a little bit.”

Kai didn’t look away from me.

“Luna,” he said quietly. “Tell me what you’re feeling right now.”

I swallowed hard. Because the truth was terrifying.

“I feel like…” I hesitated. “Like something is waiting for me to choose something.”

Selene’s eyes sharpened. “Exactly.”

Kai turned slightly toward her. “Choose what?”

Selene answered without hesitation. “Which anchor controls her response first?”

Ethan frowned. “That sounds like manipulation.”

“It is,” Selene said simply.

Kai’s grip tightened slightly. Then softer, only for me, he said. “You don’t have to choose anything.”

But even as he said it…The forest pulsed again. And this time, it wasn’t under us.

It was around us. Trees creaked inward slightly. Like the entire forest was leaning closer to hear what I would do next.

The silence returned expectant and was waiting. And I realized something that made my stomach drop completely. This wasn’t a battle anymore.

Not between clans, not between people, and not even between the Core and me.

It was learning how to steer me. And the next choice I made would teach it how.
