Chapter 156: The Thing Beneath the Mountain
Luna’s POV
The moment it woke up…The forest screamed.
Not metaphorically and not in my head. Every tree around us groaned violently as if something under the earth had grabbed the roots and pulled.
Birds exploded from the treetops and the ground cracked wider below our feet.
And the heartbeat below Crescent Forest became deafening.
I pressed my hands against my ears instinctively, but It didn’t help. Because the sound wasn’t outside me anymore. It was inside my body.
Inside my blood.
Kai grabbed my arm before I stumbled into the widening crack. “Luna!”
I looked down, and silver light pulsed from the opening below, like veins under my skin, and something moved deep underneath it. It was huge, ancient and it was watching. My breath caught.
“It sees me.”
Selene’s expression sharpened instantly. “Don’t let it lock onto you.”
“What does that even mean?!” Ethan snapped.
No one answered him. Because suddenly…The symbol beneath the forest floor flared brighter. And pain exploded behind my eyes. I gasped violently as memories slammed into me again. It was not a dream and visions. It was a memory. I remembered seeing a woman standing below a blood moon with silver hair and amber eyes. Just like mine. People kneeling around her in fear.
Then another image with a massive black chamber below the mountain.
And in the center was a living mass of silver light chained below ancient symbols. It was breathing and hungry. Then a voice echoed through the memory, and the core cannot survive without a vessel.
I staggered backward hard enough to nearly fall and Kai caught me again.
“What did you see?”
My breathing turned uneven. “It was never trapped,” I whispered.
Selene went still. “What?”
Then I looked at her slowly.
“The Core wasn’t imprisoned down there…”
A cold spread through my chest. “It was being fed.”
Silence hit instantly, even the forest seemed to pause and Kai’s face darkened.
Selene’s expression shifted into something dangerously close to realization.
And Ethan looked completely lost.
“I really hate being the only normal person here,” he muttered weakly.
Then another shake hit. It was stronger this time and the crack in the ground widened violently. And a pulse of silver energy burst upward….And suddenly every mark carved into the trees around us ignited with symbols.
Ancient ones and hundreds of them.
“This whole forest…” I said.
Kai looked around grimly. “It’s a seal.”
The truth slammed into me fully then. Not just the mountain and not just the clearing. All of Crescent Forest. Every tree and every trail. Every ritual site.
One massive prison. Or maybe worse…One massive cage holding something alive under it. The heartbeat thundered again. Closer now, and then…a voice echoed from below. It was not through the air. It was through me.
HEIR.
I froze instantly and Kai saw it immediately. “What did it say?”
I swallowed hard. “It called me the heir.”
Ethan cursed under his breath.
Selene stepped forward slowly. “That means the bond is complete.”
“No,” Kai said instantly.
But uncertainty flashed through his eyes. And that terrified me more than anything else tonight.
“What happens if it fully bonds with her?” Ethan asked quietly.
Nobody answered. Which was the answer enough. The mark below my collarbone burned hotter suddenly. I gasped. As silver light burst across my skin again, faster this time, crawling up my throat like living veins.
Kai grabbed my face carefully. “Look at me.”
I tried. But something below the mountain pulled harder, it was not physically, it was emotionally and instinctively. Like it recognized me and like it had been waiting for me. The terrifying part was the part of me that wanted to answer.
“You need to fight it,” Kai said sharply.
“I’m trying!”
“No,” Selene said quietly.
Everyone looked at her. She stared directly at me.
“That’s the problem.”
My pulse spiked. “What?”
“You’re resisting the wrong thing.”
Kai’s eyes darkened instantly. “Don’t.”
But Selene continued anyway.
“The Core doesn’t create monsters, Luna.”
I stared at her.
“It reveals what already exists.”
The words hit somewhere deep. Too deep. Because underneath the fear…
Underneath the panic… There was something inside me that was changing.
It was not becoming evil. It was becoming more. And I didn’t know if that was better or worse. The heartbeat below suddenly accelerated.
The forest reacted violently and branches snapped. Wind exploded through the clearing.
Ethan stumbled backward as the ground shook harder than before.
“Kai,” he shouted, panic finally breaking through his voice. “Something’s coming up!”
He was right. The crack below us widened again…And a massive claw burst through the earth. It was not a wolf and not a human. It was something else entirely. It was black bone and silver veins pulsing below its surface.
Far too large to belong to anything natural.
My breath stopped and Kai moved instantly, shoving me behind him.
Selene actually stepped back for the first time all night. Even she looked shaken.
The claw dug into the forest floor slowly, then another emerged beside it and the mountain trembled. And from somewhere deep underground…Something began pulling itself toward the surface. The Core wasn’t asleep anymore.
It was trying to rise.
