Chapter 138: The Truth Buried Deep

Chapter 138: The Truth Buried Deep
Every instinct screamed at her not to open it.
Instead, she checked the peephole.
Nothing.
Just an empty hallway.
Lexi swallowed hard.
Was she imagining it?
She backed away, reaching for her phone to call Julian.
But before she could, a piece of paper slid under the door.
Lexi stared at it.
Slowly, she approached.
The paper was plain white. No markings. No signature.
Just five words, scrawled in a rough, angry hand:
You’ll never be safe again.
—
Lexi’s blood turned to ice.
She called Julian immediately.
He answered on the first ring.
"Lexi?"
She couldn’t even get the words out at first.
"Julian," she whispered, voice shaking. "Come home. Please."
He didn’t ask questions.
"I’m on my way."
Fifteen minutes later, he burst through the door, gun in hand, eyes wild.
Lexi ran to him.
He caught her up against his chest, one hand cradling the back of her head.
"Talk to me," he said fiercely.
She showed him the note.
Julian read it once. Twice. His jaw clenched so hard she thought his teeth might break.
He pulled out his phone, barking orders to security, to the police, to private investigators.
Within an hour, the building was locked down.
But Lexi knew it wouldn’t matter.
Whoever was coming for them wasn’t afraid of cameras or guards.
They wanted her to know they were coming.
They wanted her to be afraid.
And it was working.
—
Later, lying in bed with Julian’s arms wrapped around her like a fortress, Lexi stared at the ceiling, wide awake.
"We should leave," she whispered.
Julian kissed her temple. "Soon, my love. I have one last thing to finish first."
Lexi turned to look at him.
"What is it?"
He smiled — sad, beautiful.
"Our future."
She didn’t understand then.
Not fully.
But she would.
Soon.
Because love, no matter how fierce, couldn’t always protect you from the storms that found you.
And their biggest storm was still coming.
The next morning, Julian woke Lexi with a soft kiss to her forehead.
"Come with me," he whispered.
Lexi blinked up at him, still half-asleep. "Where?"
He smiled, that rare, boyish smile that melted her from the inside out. "Just trust me."
She sighed dramatically but allowed him to pull her out of bed. He helped her dress warmly — a cozy sweater, jeans, boots — and guided her downstairs, where a sleek black car waited.
The city sped past them in a blur.
Lexi leaned against the window, curiosity building. Julian had been secretive for days, dodging questions, deflecting with kisses and smirks.
Now, he was vibrating with excitement like a man on the edge of revealing the biggest secret of his life.
She found herself smiling, despite everything.
Whatever it was, she knew it would be unforgettable.
Because it was Julian.
And when he loved, he loved with terrifying, breathtaking intensity.
—
The car pulled to a stop in front of a private gate on the outskirts of the city. Lexi frowned, looking around.
Beyond the gate was a wide stretch of land — trees, gardens, a winding path that disappeared into the distance.
Julian got out first, coming around to open her door.
He offered his hand.
Lexi took it without hesitation.
They walked in silence, hand in hand, until the trees parted and she saw it.
A house.
No — not just a house.
A masterpiece.
It sat nestled between the woods and a sparkling private lake. Glass walls reflected the morning sun. Wide terraces wrapped around it like open arms. It was modern, yet warm. Grand, yet inviting.
It was... perfect.
Lexi stopped, staring.
Julian turned to her, searching her face.
"This is ours," he said quietly.
Lexi’s mouth fell open. "What?"
He squeezed her hand. "I built this for you. For us. A home. Away from everything that hurt us."
Tears burned her eyes.
"You built this?" she whispered.
"Every piece," he said. "I picked everything. The floors. The colors. The garden. I wanted you to have something that was ours. Untouched by anyone else. Untainted."
Lexi pressed a hand to her mouth, overwhelmed.
"I know I’ve hurt you," Julian said, his voice thick with emotion. "I know I can't erase the past. But I can give you this. A new beginning."
Lexi launched herself into his arms, hugging him tightly.
He laughed softly, holding her as if she were the most precious thing in the world.
"Come on," he said. "There’s more."
He led her inside.
The interior was even more beautiful. Light poured through the massive windows. The furniture was soft, luxurious without being cold. Photos already hung on the walls — candid shots of them laughing, holding hands, stolen kisses.
Lexi’s heart ached with how much love was in every detail.
Julian had thought of everything.
Every single thing.
He led her upstairs to a massive bedroom overlooking the lake. A walk-in closet already filled with clothes in her size. A bathroom that looked like it belonged in a palace.
And at the center of the bedroom — a massive four-poster bed draped in soft white linens.
"Our room," Julian said, watching her carefully.
Lexi turned to him, tears streaming down her cheeks.
"Julian..." she choked.
He cupped her face in his hands, his thumbs brushing her tears away.
"I love you," he said fiercely. "I will spend the rest of my life proving it to you. If you’ll let me."
Lexi nodded, unable to speak.
He kissed her then — slow, reverent, full of promises.
And for a moment, everything else fell away.
There was no fear.
No danger.
No past.
Just them.
Just love.
Just hope.
—
But hope was fragile.
And sometimes, it hid deadly secrets.
—
Later, while Julian took a call outside, Lexi wandered the house alone, smiling as she explored every room.
Until she reached a small office at the back.
The door was slightly ajar.
She hesitated, then pushed it open.
Inside, the room was filled with sunlight. A large desk. Shelves lined with books. A beautiful painting of a lake.
And a single folder lying open on the desk.
Lexi knew she shouldn’t look.
But something — some sixth sense honed by too many betrayals — made her step closer.
She picked up the folder.
And froze.
