Chapter 146 Trust no one
“Alex dear, have you guys quit going to work? Are you scared?”
“Damn it,” he cursed angrily. Then sent a message to Thomas.
“Yes, boss.” He responded instantly.
“To the new apartment,” Alex said and ended the call.
“He is so fucking lucky I couldn't call or text him,” Alex said angrily.
Lucas gazed at him and held his hand. “Alex calm down, don't think much about this guy, since he didn't say what he wanted, then he is just messing around. Why not try to ignore him until he said what he wanted?”
Alex swallowed at Lucas’s words. Within him, he muttered, “He already gave him terms but I won't give it to him. I can't live without you Lucas.”
Silence stretched and Alex tried to compose himself. Then he started sounding serious. “Baby, do me a favour.”
Lucas tilted his head. “Anything.”
“Don’t trust your Dad completely.”
Lucas’s brows pulled together faintly. “Alex…”
“I know he’s your father,” Alex said gently, squeezing his hand. “And yeah, he said he’s sorry. That’s fine. But baby please…” His voice lowered just a little. “Don’t believe everything so easily, at least not yet. Just… be careful, for now, okay.”
Lucas held his gaze for a moment, conflicted, but he could see it wasn’t coming from doubt. It was a concern and protection.
So slowly, he nodded. “Okay, love,” he said softly. “I understand.”
Alex’s shoulders relaxed slightly at that. He lifted their joined hands and pressed a soft kiss against Lucas’s knuckles. “Good,” he murmured.
Lucas leaned closer, resting his head lightly against Alex’s shoulder despite the awkward angle, his fingers tightening around his.
Outside, the night stretched endlessly ahead.
Inside, they held onto each other, quiet, steady, and certain.
The car moved on smoothly through the quiet night, the city lights flickering past like distant stars.
He had barely gotten halfway home when his phone rang again from Thomas' call.
Alex connected instantly and answered. “Talk, Thomas.”
“Boss,” Thomas said, his voice tight. “The boys caught someone snooping around.”
Alex’s grip on the steering wheel tightened slightly. “Where exactly?”
“Near the house. He was kind of watching the place.”
Alex’s eyes darkened.
“Who is he?” he asked coldly.
“He’s not talking,” Thomas replied. “Won’t say who he is or who sent him.”
A brief silence followed, it felt heavy, and dangerous. Then Alex spoke, his voice dropping.
“Since he won't talk, hold him and put him in ropes.”
“Yes, boss.”
“Don’t touch him yet,” Alex added. “I’ll handle him myself.”
Thomas didn’t hesitate to respond. “Understood sir.”
Then the call ended.
Alex chuckled slowly, his gaze fixed on the road ahead. He muttered under his breath, “They will soon get tired of watching.”
Lucas asked, “They caught someone watching the house?”
“Yes, I will have a talk with him tomorrow since he won't talk to my men.”
The car slowed, then came to a smooth stop inside a quiet, dimly lit parking lot.
Lucas glanced around, confusion flickering across his face as he unbuckled his seatbelt. “Alex…” he started, looking back at him. “Did you rent a new place because of Mac?”
Alex stepped out of the car first, then rounded to Lucas’s side, opening the door for him.
“Rent?” he repeated with a faint smirk. “No.” His tone shifted, calm, but firm. “I bought it.”
Lucas blinked, surprised. “You… bought it?”
“For our safety,” Alex added, his expression growing serious as they started toward the building. “Baby… they bugged my house.”
Lucas stopped walking.
“What?” His voice dropped.
Alex turned back to him, his gaze steady. “I don’t know how they did it, but they did. That’s how he knew everything, what we were doing, inside the house.”
A chill ran through Lucas. For a moment, he just stared at Alex, the weight of that sinking in.
Alex stepped closer, his tone softening. “So we’re staying here for now, okay?”
Lucas hesitated… then nodded slowly. “Okay.”
The moment they stepped inside, the atmosphere shifted. The warm lighting, the clean space and quiet, felt safe.
Lucas moved further in, his eyes scanning everything with growing curiosity. The living room was spacious but cozy, the furniture modern without feeling cold. The place felt… lived-in, even though it was new.
He walked toward the window, then to the kitchen, then down the short hallway, taking it all in.
“It’s nice,” he murmured, almost to himself.
Alex leaned casually against the wall, watching him instead of the apartment. “Do you like it?” he asked.
Lucas turned, a small smile forming. “Of course. Who wouldn’t like such a cozy place?”
That was all Alex needed. In two strides, he closed the distance between them and pulled Lucas into his arms.
Lucas let out a soft breath as he settled against him, his hands naturally finding their place on Alex’s chest.
“No one can watch us here,” Alex murmured, his voice low, almost a promise.
Lucas tilted his head slightly, looking up at him.
“Rather…” Alex continued, a faint edge slipping into his tone, “we’ll be the ones watching them.”
Before Lucas could respond, Alex leaned in and pressed a soft kiss to his cheek. Then the other side. It was slow and intentional.
Lucas’s breath hitched, a quiet smile playing on his lips as his fingers curled lightly into Alex’s shirt.
And then Alex’s lips found his.
This time, he didn’t pull away quickly.
The kiss was deeper and possessive, but still gentle enough to remind Lucas that, despite everything… he was safe there with him.
The night unfolded slowly, tension melting into something softer and deeper.
What started as a simple touch turned into lingering glances, quiet laughter, and lingering kisses that refused to stay light. Every worry, every fear from the day seemed to fade the more they entangled, replaced by warmth, and comfort.
Alex held Lucas like he was something fragile and precious, and Lucas clung to him like he was home.
And somewhere between whispered names and soft breaths, they gave in completely, losing themselves in each other. It wasn't out of desperation, but out of something far more certain and sweet.
Morning came too soon, as a sharp vibration cut through the quiet room.
Alex groaned, barely stirring as his phone buzzed against the bedside table. He ignored it, pulling Lucas closer, burying his face slightly into his hair.
Silence returned but then it rang again.
This time, Lucas shifted, blinking awake as the persistent sound dragged him out of sleep. “Alex…” he murmured, nudging him lightly. “Your phone…”
Alex let out a low breath, clearly unwilling. “Ignore it.”
“It might be important,” Lucas said softly, though his voice still carried sleep. “Pick it up.”
Alex exhaled, reluctantly reaching for the phone. The moment he saw the name on the screen, whatever trace of sleep was left in his eyes vanished.
It was, Mac. His jaw tightened as he answered, deciding not to give in to fear anymore. “What do you want, Mac?”
Lucas’s eyes snapped open at the name.
A low chuckle echoed from the other end. “My dear Alex… are you sleeping in a hotel now?”
Alex’s expression darkened instantly. “That’s none of your business. If you have nothing useful to say, get off my phone.”
Mac laughed again, clearly amused. “Woah, woah… you sound good today. Very confident.” His tone turned teasing. “What’s the secret, darling?”
