Meeting The In-laws

Meeting The In-laws
Kayla’s POV

Later that evening, after we’d had some much-needed time to ourselves, Nathan drove us to the Vargas family estate.

The moment we passed through the massive wrought-iron gates, my jaw dropped.

The estate was breathtaking…more like a palace than a house.

Sprawling manicured lawns stretched endlessly, illuminated by elegant pathway lights.

The main mansion rose like something out of a fairytale, with grand columns, floor-to-ceiling windows glowing with warm light, and a fountain sparkling in the courtyard.

Trees lined the long driveway, leading up to a grand mansion that looked like it belonged in a magazine. There were marble columns and several luxury cars parked neatly like they were on display.

I suddenly felt very small.

This is his world. Wealthy. Powerful. Established.

And here I was…a single mother who had been scraping by in tiny apartments and running a small bakery. What if his mother took one look at me and decided I wasn’t good enough?

I was already bracing myself for the classic rich-mother scene…the one where she’d slide an insane check across the table and tell me to disappear from her son’s life. I’d seen it in too many dramas.

But the moment we stepped inside, everything flipped.

Nathan’s mother, Eleanor Vargas, came rushing toward us with open arms. She was elegant, graceful, and radiating warmth.

“Kayla, my dear!” she exclaimed, pulling me into a tight, genuine hug that smelled like expensive perfume and fresh flowers. “I’m so sorry for how I treated you at the hospital. I was rude, judgmental, and completely out of line. Can you ever forgive me?”

I stood there stunned, arms hanging awkwardly before I hugged her back. “It’s… it’s okay, Mrs. Vargas. Really.”

“Please, call me Eleanor.” She pulled back and smiled brightly, then reached into her pocket and brought out a delicate antique necklace with a beautiful sapphire pendant. “This has been in our family for generations. It belonged to my mother, and her mother before her. I want you to have it.”

Before I could protest, she stepped behind me and fastened it around my neck. The pendant rested cool and heavy against my collarbone.

“I can’t accept this,” I whispered, touching it.

“You can and you will. You are my son’s wife,” she said softly. “I can’t wait to meet my grandson. I’m going to spoil that boy rotten.”

The entire evening was surprisingly peaceful and warm.

During dinner, the table was filled with laughter and easy conversation.

Nathan’s father, Richard, was quiet but kind, asking me gentle questions about the bakery and listening intently when I spoke about Caden.

At one point, Nathan pouted dramatically. “Mom, you’ve barely looked at me since we got here. Am I not your son anymore ?”

Eleanor waved a dismissive hand. “I might as well disown you and adopt Kayla as my daughter. She’s so respectful and carries such a regal aura. Perfect daughter material.”

Nathan’s eyes widened in mock horror. “Woah, woah, Dad! Hold your wife. She can’t steal mine!”

Richard chuckled deeply, sipping his wine. “Your mother has made up her mind, son. You’re on your own.”

The whole table erupted in laughter. I found myself genuinely relaxing, smiling more than I had in weeks. They treated me like I already belonged.

The conversation continued to flow easily…stories about Nathan as a stubborn child, Eleanor asking me about my favorite recipes, Richard sharing funny stories about Nathan’s early days as a police officer.

The entire evening felt…normal. Warm. Like I've always been a part of their family this whole time.

When dinner ended, Eleanor insisted the servants pack several containers of food for us. “You’ve been through so much, dear. Let this rest in your freezer so you don’t have to cook for a few days.”

I hugged them both tightly before we left. “Thank you. I’m really glad I got to meet you.”

Eleanor hugged me back. “We’re your family now, Kayla. Never forget that.”

In the car on the way home, I turned to Nathan.

“I’m really happy I met them,” I said softly.

He smiled, eyes on the road. “They said the same about you.”

After a comfortable silence, he asked, “So…it’s official now. When do you want to have our wedding ceremony?”

I thought about it. “I need to talk to Caden first.”

Nathan’s hands tightened slightly on the steering wheel. “What if he doesn’t want me as his father? What if he doesn't like me?”

I laughed softly. “What are you talking about? Caden would be thrilled. He’s always wanted a daddy. And you’re a cop…he thinks cops are real-life superheroes like Superman and Batman.”

Nathan visibly relaxed, a big smile spreading across his face. “I can’t wait to meet him.”

My heart felt full as I watched the city lights pass by, reflecting on everything that had happened.

From rock bottom to this…a husband who loved me and who wants to be a part of Caden's life, a supportive family, and hope for the future.

My phone rang minutes later. It was Holly.

I scoffed playfully and picked up.

“You traitor!” I started immediately. “You knew the marriage was real this whole time and didn’t tell me? I thought we were best friends!”

Holly laughed. “I would’ve told you, but you would’ve messed everything up! I know you, Kay. You would’ve panicked and run. I only wanted what was best for you. Please forgive me?”

I sighed. “Fine. I’ll forgive you…but on one condition.”

“Anything!” Holly said dramatically. “As long as it doesn’t involve me staying away from David or being celibate.”

I grinned mischievously.

“You have to be my maid of honor…and wear the ugliest, most ridiculous pink frilly dress I can find. With a giant bow. And you have to give a speech about how I’m the best thing that ever happened to you while wearing it.”

Holly gasped in horror. “You evil woman!” and I couldn't help but laugh. Because somehow, my life was beginning to feel perfect.
