Chapter 40

Chapter 40
POV: Darius

The crackle of the fire whispered into the stillness. Stars above shimmered, and yet beneath that peaceful sky, something restless crawled a sense that our victory was only the beginning.

Alice stirred, her violet eyes reflecting starlight.

“I feel… changed,” she whispered softly.

I brushed a strand of hair from her face. “You did everything tonight. You defeated the Keeper.”

She tucked her head into my shoulder. “But the Keeper’s purpose… he didn’t vanish. He paused.”

Silence followed.

Kael jumped to his feet, pacing. “He admitted it himself. Balance. The world… he’s still watching.”

Luca tilted his head. “Maybe it’s time to leave. Make camp further from the temple. Bet the Keeper has allies.”

Alice closed her eyes tightly. “We can’t. I know where we will go next.”

“Where?” I asked.

She sat up, gazing toward the dark silhouette of the temple behind us. “I need to find Selene’s source. Not the darkness. But the origin. There’s… something lost in the heart of this place.”

Her words were hushed, but urgent.

Kael frowned. “We just risked our lives chasing cosmic horrors. And now you want to go backwards into the mountain?”

Alice nodded. “I want answers. And I think… so does the Keeper.”

The Heart of the Temple

By dawn, our camp was broken. We guided Alice deeper into the mountain’s belly, crossing broken halls and subterranean springs. Stone walls pulsed faintly with arcane runes Selene’s echoes.

“Everyone stay close,” Alice whispered, her voice low, confident.

Kael led with his blades drawn. I held my sword poised. Luca conjured a faint glow at his palm to light the way.

We descended into a vaulted chamber. In its center lay a shallow pool, milky water swirling above a hidden stone disc, cracked and marred.

“This is it,” Alice breathed.

I leaned in. The carvings around the pool glowed as she stepped forward.

“I can hear her,” she said.

Selene’s voice faint, like a distant lullaby, echoed through the cavern.

A shimmer appeared beneath the surface. Ripples turned to shapes.

We watched as a figure formed in the water Selene’s face, eyes closed and peaceful, lips moving as if speaking.

“Who has the right to wake the Guardian?” the voice echoed, sorrowful and powerful.

Alice swallowed. “I do.”

Selene’s visage faded. The pool’s glow intensified, illuminating every rune and drake-fanged archway.

Then the ground trembled violently.

Kael’s swords clanged as he steadied himself. I caught Luca’s elbow; the chamber was collapsing.

We bolted upward, the temple screaming in protest.

Before we reached the exit, a loud snap echoed. Part of the ceiling gave way, blocking our retreat with rubble.

Alice glared at me. “Darius now.”

I dropped to one knee, placing the sword’s tip against the sealed stones. My blade vibrated at the resonance of the pool’s spell.

Alice whispered an incantation. The stones shifted, a gateway opening within the mountain’s flank.

The Price of Power

We hurried through the portal into an illuminated cavern massive, cathedral-shaped. Glowing crystals dripped from the ceiling. At its heart, suspended above a dais, floated a runic sphere cradled by arcs of light. Inside it, I glimpsed...power. Raw, ancient. Something like creation twisted into a pulse of energy.

Alice’s breath caught. “This… this is the Source.”

As if on cue, the air stilled. The temperature dropped. Heaven and Earth drew in a single breath.

From behind us, Lazarus stepped forward our old friend Luca's former mentor. But his eyes glowed obsidian. His lips curved.

“Beautiful,” he whispered, eyes resting on Alice. “You’ve found it.”

My blood froze.

“Lazarus?” Luca gasped.

He shook his head. “Not anymore. The Keeper... gave me this chance. He's a henchman no longer. I choose to feed the balance.”

Alice stepped between us, hands trembling. “You can’t.”

He chuckled. “You think after tonight’s performance, he’ll let you walk away with it? No. The Keeper sees balance is only achieved when both ends are fed. I have chosen.”

Her voice trembled with fear and betrayal. “Luca why?”

Luca, once her brother in magic, now smiled with distant grief. “Sacrifice is part of harmony.”

I drew my sword. “You won’t take her. We won’t let you.”

He flicked a hand. “Then you leave me no choice.”

Lava-like energy rippled from the sphere, weaving into his arms. I saw the edge of his mind flicker then harden as he prepared to strike.

Kael charged, swinging across the chamber. I followed, but before we could reach him he vanished. The air erupted with force.

We tumbled across the crystalline tiles. Kael grunted; I heard him strike a pillar. Luca stumbled, coughing.

Alice’s eyes burned violet. She raised her hands. The runic sphere responded tendrils of raw magic licking into her fingers. She seemed torn two waves colliding inside her.

“Stop!” I screamed.

Her cry stopped me. “He’s right.” Her voice shattered. “I can’t destroy the Source. But I can’t let him take it.”

She closed her eyes. She focused. The sphere pulsed violently.

Lazarus appeared again across the dais, but her magic burned higher concerted, begging mercy.

The sphere’s glow enveloped them both. I shielded my eyes.

When the light dimmed Lazarus lay collapsed, drained. The sphere toppled its glow gone. Alice staggered forward and caught it before it hit stone. Then the cavern shook violently. Crystals collapsed. Stone cracked.

“This room..." Kael shouted. "Failing."

I caught Alice. “Time to go.”

A New Balance

Outside, the tunnel was blocked by debris. But Alice had the sphere. She rose, her robes glowing faintly.

We found another passage, carved but hidden behind statues of ancient Guardians. It led upward to the forest, bathed in moonlight.

When we emerged, dawn was breaking.

Luca limped to the open sky. Lazarus sat, shaken by the loss of Source, freed or punished maybe both.

Alice held the sphere. It was dark, but it pulsed like a beating heart. “We saved you,” she whispered.

Luca knelt, head bowed. “I… sought to feed the balance. But I fed my own ambition.”

Alice wiped tears from her cheek. “It’s okay.”

Kael offered help. Luca just nodded, too broken for words.

Choices Forged

That evening, the fire still glowed outside the temple ruin. We sat in its warm breath. The Source rested before us, balanced precariously on a stone plinth.

Alice placed her hands around it, smiling at the glow flickering between her palms.

“I won’t use it to dominate,” she said softly. “It’s safe. A gift. A promise.”

I gripped her hand. “And I promise, we’ll stand with you.”

Kael rested his blades aside and raised a tin cup. “To unity.”

Luca lifted his own, silent but present.

Our strange fellowship sat in quiet victory haunted and hopeful. We had found a new balance by resisting the old. By confronting not only the cosmic terror, but also the human hunger for power.

We had survived the Keeper’s wrath, the Source's might, and our own ambition.

The mountain breathed its ancient sigh behind us as forest life returned wind, birds, new growth.

Balance, it seemed, might not be confined to cosmic scales. It could be forged, imperfectly, by broken people choosing light over enthrallment.

And by dawn, we would set out as guardians not saviors.

Because sometimes, the hardest fight comes from resisting the power of destiny… and choosing ourselves instead.
