Chapter 240

Chapter 240
Kara

The cold hit me like a physical force as I stepped into the courtyard, but the heavy white fur cloak Emma draped over my shoulders kept the worst of it at bay. The aisle between the seated guests seemed impossibly long, every face turning toward me.

Don't look at them, Blake commanded through the bond. Look at us. Only us.

I lifted my gaze to the three men waiting at the altar, and suddenly nothing else mattered. They stood in a triangle formation, black suits stark against the white snow, silver ties catching the light. Blake's longer hair was pulled back, emphasizing the sharp angles of his face and the intensity in his pale blue eyes. Cole had trimmed his beard close, making him look younger, more vulnerable. Asher stood with military precision, but I could see the tremor in his hands, the way his wolf prowled just beneath his skin.

Through the bond, their emotions hit me like a tidal wave: anticipation, possessiveness, love so fierce it bordered on pain, and underneath it all, a thread of disbelief that I was actually here, actually choosing this, actually theirs.

My feet found their rhythm, carrying me forward through the snow. With each step, the mate bond thrummed stronger, pulling me toward them like coming home.

I passed Dmitri, his weathered face creased with emotion. Victoria's hand went to her mouth, her eyes glistening. My parents rose together, both crying openly. Dr. Harrison beamed. Anna and Sol watched with tear-streaked faces, their gratitude palpable.

But it was my mates' reactions that undid me. Blake's scent exploded outward—gunpowder and leather and mine—wrapping around me like a second cloak. Asher's black ebony fragrance followed, creating a wall of protection. Cole's mint and ozone scent wove through the others, cool and clean and home.

When I finally reached them, standing in the center of their triangle, the world narrowed to just us. Blake's hand trembled as he reached for mine. Asher's eyes had gone completely gold, his wolf so close to the surface that his skin seemed to glow. Cole's smile was watery, his usual composure shattered.

You came, Blake sent, and I realized with a jolt that some part of him had genuinely feared I wouldn't.

Where else would I be? I sent back, pouring every ounce of certainty I had into the bond. This is where I belong.

The relief that flooded back nearly brought me to my knees. Asher's hand immediately steadied my elbow, his touch gentle despite the barely controlled strength beneath it.

Dmitri stepped forward to officiate, his voice carrying in the frozen air. "We gather today under the witness of moon and stars, of pack and blood, to formalize what fate has already written." He looked at me, then at each of my mates in turn. "This is no ordinary mating ceremony. Three Alphas, one Luna. A bond that defies tradition and creates new precedent."

His gaze swept over the assembled wolves. "This pack has seen darkness. Has seen what happens when power is abused, when the weak are crushed beneath the strong." His eyes found mine, warm with pride. "But today, we witness something different. Today, we see three Alphas who chose to change. Who looked at the mate fate gave them and decided to become worthy of her."

Victoria made a small sound, quickly stifled. Marcus's hand found hers, their fingers interlacing.

"Let any who would protest speak now," Dmitri said formally, "or hold their peace forever."

The silence that followed was absolute.

"Then let us begin." Dmitri's gaze settled on Asher. "Alpha. State your vow."

Asher stepped forward, taking both my hands in his. His palms were warm despite the cold, steady despite the tremor I'd seen moments before. Through the bond, I felt him gathering his thoughts, his emotions, everything he wanted to say but had never found the words for.

"Kara," he began, his voice carrying clearly despite its roughness, "from the moment we realized you were our mate, I knew my life had changed forever. But it took me too long to understand how it should change. How I needed to change."

His thumbs brushed over my knuckles, a gentle rhythm that anchored us both.

"I spent years believing strength meant control. That being Alpha meant never showing weakness, never admitting fault, never letting anyone see the cracks." His eyes, pure gold now, held mine. "You showed me that real strength is acknowledging those cracks. Apologizing for them. Working every day to be better than the person you were yesterday."

Through the bond, I felt his shame for the past, his determination for the future, his overwhelming love for me and the children I carried.

"I vow to protect you and our children with everything I am," he continued. "Not by caging you, not by making decisions for you, but by standing beside you as you make your own choices. I vow to listen when you speak, to trust your judgment even when my instincts scream otherwise, to be the partner you deserve rather than the tyrant I was raised to be."

His voice dropped, became almost intimate despite the crowd around us.

"I vow to spend the rest of my life proving that you were right to give us another chance. That you were right to believe we could change. That you were right to love us despite everything we'd done." He brought my hands to his lips, pressed a kiss to each knuckle. "You are my mate, my Luna, my salvation. And I am yours, completely and forever."

The black ebony of his scent wrapped around me, warm and protective, no longer suffocating but sheltering. Through the bond, I felt his wolf's complete submission, his human heart's total devotion.

I love you, I sent through the bond, my throat too tight for words.

I know, he sent back, and there was wonder in it. I know, and I will never take it for granted.

Dmitri nodded, then turned to Blake. "Alpha. State your vow."

Blake's hand found mine, his grip almost painfully tight. Through the bond, I felt his struggle—the words he wanted to say warring with the emotions threatening to overwhelm him.

"I'm not good at this," he said finally, his voice rough. "The pretty words, the romantic shit. That's not me." He laughed, but it came out shaky. "But you know that. You know all my ugly parts, all the ways I fucked up, all the times I chose cruelty over kindness because I was too much of a coward to admit what I really felt."

His pale blue eyes were bright with unshed tears.

"I spent years hurting you because I didn't know how to handle what you made me feel. Because I was terrified of needing someone the way I needed you. Because admitting I loved you meant admitting I could lose you, and that scared me more than anything."

He pulled me closer, until I could feel the heat of him even through the cold.

"But I'm not scared anymore. Or maybe I am, but I'm done letting fear make my decisions." His free hand came up to cup my face, thumb brushing over my cheekbone. "I vow to love you loudly. To make sure you never doubt for a second that you're wanted, cherished, adored. I vow to be the safe place you can always come home to, the arms that will always catch you when you fall."

His scent—gunpowder and leather—flared around us, no longer aggressive but warm, welcoming.

"I vow to be the father our children deserve. To show them every day what it means to love someone fiercely and completely. To make sure they never question whether they're wanted the way you had to." His voice broke. "You saved me, Kara. From myself, from the monster I was becoming. And I will spend every day of forever being worthy of that salvation."

Baby, I sent through the bond, my heart aching with the depth of his emotion.

My star, he sent back, and kissed me before Dmitri could protest—a fierce, claiming kiss that tasted of salt and promises.

When we broke apart, both breathing hard, Dmitri was smiling despite himself.

"Alpha," he said to Cole. "State your vow."
