Chapter 28 - Truth
Odd.
I turned to look at him, and he gave me a reassuring smile while looking down at me.
"Well, I think I understand given that Mr. Moonblood was the one who prevented you from getting into that accident in the first place," Dana remarked, moving to the opposite side of the bed and sitting down there. "I'm just relieved to hear that you're okay, C.
"And if you're anxious to know, the baby is doing fine as well, which is a huge relief. Dr. Mathers shared his thoughts.
"Dr., you have no idea how happy it makes me to hear that. I responded to his remark with a broad grin plastered across my face. I had no idea that I was crying until I felt Mr. Moonblood's hand cleaning my cheeks with a soft and silky handkerchief.
"Oh, thank you. I uttered these words while accepting the handkerchief he had offered me and drying my tears.
"In all honesty, it felt very much like a miracle had taken place. Dr. Mathers continued, "There is not even so much as a scratch on you, Ms. Beaufort. It is without a doubt a miraculous occurrence."
The fact that he brought it up made me realize that apart from my body aching, I do not have any bandages or scrapes on my body, nor do I have any other indication that I was involved in that collision. It's almost as if that event never took place at all.
When Joe finally did speak up, his voice was scratchy, and he said, "Honey, I'm glad to see that you're okay and well. The little one as well. As he got closer to Mr. Moonblood, he shook his hand and expressed his gratitude. "I am indebted to you, and there aren't enough words of gratitude that can express how much we appreciate your help."
I was surprised to hear my father practically muddle his speech as a result of his emotions because it's not something you witness very often. When I got closer, I could see that he had unblinked tears in his eyes, and it hurt my heart that I was worrying him so much. "How did it happen? How did you manage to rescue my little girl?"
"Pray do tell, Mr. Moonblood. You didn't tell us what happened other than the fact that the cops interviewed you. Dana inquired, sounding almost as if she were challenging him but without directly saying so.
"I was nearby when I saw Clara standing absolutely still in her spot as the truck started moving in her direction," he said. "I was quick on my feet and was able to pull her out of the way just in time to avoid the collision between the truck and her car."
I didn't know how, but I had the distinct impression that he was saying something that he had previously practiced or rehearsed and that the statement was completely scripted, something that the vast majority of people, including the police, would find to be perfectly reasonable and acceptable.
Lidia gave me a thoughtful look before asking, "Well, ain't you lucky, hun? Even though Mom was already crying, she went over to Mr. Moonblood and hugged him without saying a word. " We are eternally grateful to you, Mr. Moonblood, for rescuing our cherished daughter. Lidia spoke up while Joe was trying to comfort her.
At that very moment, Mr. Moonblood turned his attention toward me and remarked, "It was an honor and my pleasure to save your daughter. If I were in the same situation, I would never for a moment question whether or not I should try to save her."
Oh, my goodness.
The way he stared at me made me want to collapse into a puddle and drown in my tears. The fact that he never took his eyes off of me and that I could feel every passionate word he uttered caused my heart to race rapidly the entire time.
"Thank you, Mr. Moonblood. I stuttered as I answered. "But that’s not what I remember happening. I mumbled under my breath.
After a few uncomfortable seconds, Dr. Mathers finally revealed the identity of the woman he was with. She goes by the name Priscilla, and apparently she is Dr. Mathers' wife. I recall Dana talking about Priscilla when she came home after her freshman year of college, since they had been friends and roommates back in the day at the college where they both attended.
After some time had passed, my parents said their final goodbyes for the day. However, Mr. Moonblood did not leave at any point and remained in the room even after everyone else had left and only Dana was left behind. We were silent for a bit, but I just couldn't seem to put together some of the pieces of the accident in my memory, which I have been curious about ever since I woke up.
"Hey there, Dana."
"Hmmm?" After a moment of staring at the screen of her phone, she raised her head.
"I'm curious. What exactly happened to me?" I asked.
"What do you mean by that? You were involved in an accident, yet you came out unscathed." She answered directly to my question, although I did see her stare at Mr. Moonblood for a fraction of a second before she did so.
"I am aware that I was involved in an accident. To put it plainly, I came very close to losing my life because of it." I expressed my frustration by using the word.
"I'm not sure whether I understand what you're trying to ask. She asked when she noticed the heartbeat monitor blinking a few more times. "You're getting stressed out, and that's the last thing any of us want. Maybe we should just call it a day and move on. You have to take some time to rest and get better quickly."
"I believe you, Mr. Moonblood, were the one who was able to save me, but not in the way that you described. I spoke my mind despite the fact that I was apprehensive. "At the very least, tell me the truth," I pleaded.
"I have done so already. Alaric Moonblood spoke with a great deal of conviction. "I removed you from danger by pulling you out of the way."
"With your body, you shielded me from harm, and I... I halted for a moment to check and see if he had heard me. "I know what I saw, and I know how I felt when you placed yourself in between me and that truck!"
"C..." While holding my hand, Dana made several attempts to calm me down. "I understand that this may be too much for you to take in, but you may be confused with everything, particularly given the fact that what you are experiencing is extremely traumatic. Perhaps we should allow you a little bit more time to relax."
"It doesn't matter." I murmured as I buried myself deeper under the blanket, which turned out to be very comfy, and turned my back on the man who had just saved my life.
"Let's give her some space. She has a lot of healing to do." As Dana left the room, I was able to overhear what she had to say.
I initially believed that he had left in the same direction as Dana, but after a few seconds, I heard him move from where he was standing and say, "I'll be back. Have a peaceful night's sleep."
