Chapter 43 Her Pain

Chapter 43 Her Pain
The mountain bunkers medical bay smelled bad. There was blood, sweat and medicine in the air. Iris sat on a metal stool next to Luciens bed holding his hand. His chest went up and down slowly. The machines beeped steady but slow. The cut in his side opened again during the chaos. Losing blood and stress from Victorias last override made his body weak. Amara worked on him for hours, stitching giving him blood and praying the damage wasn't permanent. Now he lay unconscious his face slack and pale with circles under his eyes.

Iris hadn't left his side since they brought him in. Her body ached from the gunfight escaping and making love in the cave that felt like a lifetime ago.. None of that mattered. Lucien was fighting for his life because he protected their family from the monsters hunting them. The man who stalked her from the shadows became the shield that stood between their children and oblivion.

The ten kids. Nine still truly theirs. Theos lost mind haunting every breath. Slept in the adjacent nursery under heavy guard. Elias refused to leave until Lucien woke. He was finally tired. Lila and Noah slept tangled. The newborns were in incubators their tiny fists moving sometimes as if they sensed the storm still raging. Aurora, Dawn and Hope took turns watching at the door their bodies pushed to the limit. Their spirits strong.

Iris brushed a lock of hair from Luciens forehead her fingers shaking. "You promised you'd always come back " she whispered, her voice cracking. "Don't break that promise now. Our babies need their father. I need you."

A soft knock sounded. Dr. Amara Soto entered, her face drawn with exhaustion. "His vitals are getting better. The neural feedback from Victorias seed is still causing small seizures. We've made it less bad. He needs time.. Rest. Real rest."

Iris nodded,. Her eyes never left Luciens face. "The children?"

"Grace is with them. Shes singing the lullaby you taught her. It seems to calm their dreams for now." Amara hesitated, added gently "They're starting to remember pieces. Elias asked me if the bad lady cut you open while you were sleeping."

The words hit Iris hard. Her buried pain. The suppressed memory of the night Elenas team took their children while she lay unconscious. Came to the surface. She had carried multiples. They were ripped away before she could even feel them move. The pain of that violation buried for eight years now bled fresh through every childs dream.

"I should have protected them " Iris whispered, tears slipping down her cheeks. "Even before they were born."

Amara placed a hand on her shoulder. "None of this is your fault. Elena, Marcus, Victoria… they built an empire on stealing from mothers like you.. You're taking it back. One breath at a time."

Before Iris could respond the bunkers internal comms crackled. Captain Reyess voice was tight. "We have movement on the southern ridge. Not Victors signature. This is something. Unmarked black-ops level. They're not attacking yet. Just watching."

The suspense got tighter. Iris kissed Luciens hand. Stood, wiping her tears. "I'm not losing anyone tonight."

She joined the others in the monitoring room. The screens showed thermal signatures moving through the trees. Silent too coordinated for mercenaries. Sophia zoomed in on one figure. "That's not The Continuum. Those are government black-site operators. Project Elysiums official handlers. They want the children as state assets now."

Another layer. Another enemy. The family couldn’t catch a breath.

Grace stepped forward small but resolute. "The original template. The one controlling the clones. Is with them. She’s offering them the children in exchange for protection. They think they can control the technology better than Victor."

The emotional weight pressed down harder. Iris felt the buried pain rising again. The memory of the scalpel the hands taking her babies the darkness that had swallowed her for years. She pressed a hand to her abdomen the scar from the procedure burning like a brand.

Lucien’s monitors suddenly spiked. He gasped awake eyes wild. "Iris… the children… they’re coming for the babies first…”

She rushed to his side climbing onto the bed and holding him as he convulsed through another micro-seizure. When it passed he pulled her down kissing her with hunger despite the pain. Their mouths moved together tasting salt and fear reaffirming life in the middle of death. His hands roamed her body needing to feel her real and whole. For a stolen minute the world narrowed to them. Two broken souls clinging to each other in the dark.

The alarms blared again.

The southern ridge team had breached the fence. Gunfire echoed through the tunnels. Captain Reyes shouted orders as the family scrambled. Iris and Lucien moved as one gathering the children while the older girls and Sophia provided cover. The newborns were strapped securely. The group ran through the emergency evacuation tunnel hearts pounding, children crying.

Through the tunnel lights flickered. A new voice came over the speakers. The original template, speaking with a voice that was both ancient and childlike. "Mother. Father. I don’t want to hurt you.. They made me choose. The government wants the children as weapons. Victor wants them as heirs. I want… I want to be part of a family. Help me.. I’ll have to take them.”

The tunnel exit opened into a snow-covered clearing. Waiting there was a figure. The original template, a young woman who looked exactly like an older version of Iris holding a small device that glowed with neural light.

“I’m not the enemy " she said, voice cracking with pain. "I’m the first. The one they broke first. Let me help you destroy the technology.. You have to accept me. As your daughter. The thirteenth.”

Thirteen.

The number felt like a curse now. Iris looked at Lucien both of them bleeding, exhausted and utterly human in their terror and love. The buried pain of the accident recall had brought them here. To this moment of choice.

Lucien stepped forward hand outstretched. "If you’re really ours then fight with us. Not for us. With us.”

The template. Who they would later name Seraphina. Took his hand. The device in her hand deactivated the pursuing signals.

As the extraction helicopter descended and the family loaded aboard a final devastating transmission arrived.

It was, from Theo. His mind, somehow transmitted from Victor’s facility. "Mommy. Daddy. I’m still fighting.. They’re making me forget you. Please hurry. I love you.”

The screen went dark.

In the helicopter surrounded by their surviving children and the new daughter who might save them all Iris and Lucien held each other tightly. The kiss they shared was slow, deep and full of every buried pain they had finally unearthed.
