Chapter 35 Emotional Crack

Chapter 35 Emotional Crack
The emergency lights at the compound flickered like a dying heartbeat. They cast shadows across the walls. Iris stood in the middle of the chaos. She had her arms around as many of her children as she could hold. Ten small bodies pressed against her. Some were crying. Some were trying to be brave. All of them were terrified. Elias stood in front of Lila and Noah. He was like a shield. Hope, Aurora and Dawn stood to-back. Their enhanced senses picked up every footstep. Whispered command from the enemy. Theo clung to Iriss leg. His face was buried in her thigh. The three newborns wailed in their pod. Their tiny cries cut through Iris.

Lucien stood in front of them. He was like a wall of muscle and fury. His pistol was raised. Blood still seeped from the wound in his side. His storm-gray eyes burned with a fathers rage. It had crossed into something. "No one touches them " he growled. His voice was low and lethal. "Not while I'm breathing."

Captain Reyes limped into position beside him. Her rifle was steady despite her injuries. Sophia and Serena guarded the entrance. Claire held two of the triplets against her chest. Her face was pale but resolute. Thomas Vale. Iriss father. Had taken a spot near the newborns. His hands were shaking as he loaded a weapon.

The twelfth child. The template. Was still out there. She wore Iriss face. She was waiting to strike.

A new transmission crackled through the speakers. Victor Langs voice filled the room. He sounded smooth and mocking. "You've fought hard for them Graves. How noble.. Did you ever stop to wonder why the neural markers only respond to genuine love? Because love is the key. It opens every door.. Right now your love is going to destroy them."

The lights died. Darkness swallowed the room. The childrens cries grew louder. Iris felt hands clutching her. They were desperate and trusting. They were breaking her heart with every touch. "Mommy don't let them take us " Lila whimpered.

"I won't baby. I swear it."

The emergency generators kicked in with a groan. The red lights returned. They revealed the nightmare standing in the doorway.

It was her. Another Iris-clone. She was perfect in every detail. She had the warm brown hair and green eyes. She had the small scar on her left wrist.. Her smile was wrong. It was too serene. Empty.

"Hello, sister " the clone said softly. She used Iriss voice. "I've come to take our children home. The real home. Where they'll never be afraid again."

Lucien fired without hesitation. The shot hit the clone in the shoulder.. She didn't flinch. Instead she laughed. It was Iriss laugh. Twisted with something ancient and cold.

"You still don't understand " the clone whispered. "I'm not a copy. I'm the evolution.. I carry something none of you do. The original consciousness of Councilor Blackwood. Hes been waiting inside me for years."

The emotional crack inside Iris widened into a chasm. This thing wearing her face speaking with her voice claiming her children. It was the violation. She stepped forward. She shielded the ones behind her. "You are not their mother. You will never be their mother."

The clone tilted her head. She studied Iris with interest. ". I remember every lullaby you sang. Every promise you made. I was there in their dreams while you were fighting. They already love me more."

Lila started crying. "Mommy… which one are you?"

The question shattered Iris. She dropped to her knees in front of her children. Tears streamed down her face. "I'm the one, baby. The one who carried you. The one who would die for you. Feel my hands. They're warm. They're yours."

Lucien moved beside her. He pulled all the children into a protective circle. His voice was raw when he spoke. "This is our family. Blood, clones, experiments. It doesn't matter. You are ours.. We are yours."

The clone wasn't finished. She raised her hand. The children suddenly convulsed in unison. They cried out in pain. The neural markers were reactivating. Hope screamed the loudest. Her small body arched as the voices in her head grew louder.

"They're coming " Hope gasped. "All the copies. Hundreds of them. They're marching on the compound now."

Outside the sound of approaching vehicles and helicopters grew louder. Victor Langs voice returned over the speakers. "You have ten minutes to choose. Deliver the ten children to me. I activate the full hive protocol. They will turn on each other. Parents against children. Siblings against siblings. Love will become the weapon that destroys you."

The emotional weight crushed the room. Iris looked at Lucien. They were both bleeding, exhausted and utterly human in their terror. This wasn't about survival anymore. It was about watching the family they had bled oceans for tear itself from the inside.

Dr. Amara suddenly cried out from her station. "I found something! A hidden file in the crash data. There was never one crash. There were three. The first one was staged by your father, Thomas to try to save you Iris. The second by Victoria to steal the embryos. The third… by Adam."

All eyes turned to Adam. He had just arrived with his team. Adam. Their firstborn. Stood in the doorway. He was breathing hard. He had blood on his hands.

"I tried to stop it " he said. His voice was breaking. "I caused the third crash to destroy the lab.. I was too late. The twelfth child. The template. Was already grown.. She's not just a copy. She's the consciousness. The first mind they ever transferred. Shes been alive for over fifty years jumping from body to body.. She wants this family because we represent the perfect genetic bridge. The one that can finally let them live forever without rejection."

Eleven. Twelve. The numbers kept growing. The horror kept deepening.

As Victors forces breached the perimeter and gunfire erupted again Lucien made a decision. It cracked his soul open.

"We split up " he said. "I take the enhanced children and draw them away. Iris you take the ones and the newborns through the tunnels to the secondary extraction point. Adam will lead you."

Iris grabbed his shirt. Her eyes were wide with panic. "No. We stay together. We promised."

He cupped her face. His forehead was pressed to hers. Tears mixed with the blood on his cheeks. "If we stay together they take us all once. This way at least some of you survive. I love you Iris. More than my life. Tell the children I loved them enough to die for them."

They shared a kiss. It was desperate and salty with tears. It was full of every word between them. It was a kiss that tasted like goodbye and at the same time. When they broke apart both were crying openly.

The children sensed what was happening. Elias stepped forward. He was like the boy he had been forced to become. "I'm going with Dad. I can help."

Lila clung to Iris. She was sobbing. "Don't leave us Daddy."

The emotional crack inside the family widened into something that felt irreparable. Lucien hugged every child, even the newborns. He whispered promises and love into their hair. Then he looked at Iris one time.

"Find me when its over " he said. "No matter what face I'm wearing."

He left with Aurora, Dawn, Hope and Adam. They drew the bulk of the enemy forces away in a diversion. Iris took the ones and the newborns through the emergency tunnels. Claire, Sophia and Serena were beside her. Captain Reyes covered their retreat.

The tunnels were dark and narrow. They were filled with the sounds of their breathing and the childrens quiet sobs. Every step away from Lucien felt like tearing her heart out.

Through the tunnel lights flickered. A new voice came over the speakers. It was the child, the original template. She spoke with a voice that was both ancient and childlike.

"Mother. I've been waiting for you for long. Come find me. I have something to show you. Something that will change everything."

The tunnel exit opened into a clearing. A single black helicopter waited.. Standing beside it was a little girl. She looked like Hope. But with older knowing eyes.

The twelfth child had come to them.

"I'm not here to hurt you " she said softly. "I'm here to offer you a choice no one else can. I can save all of them.. I need one thing in return."

She stepped closer. Her eyes were glowing.

"I need to become part of this family. For real. Not, as a copy. As your daughter. The one you never got to hold. Let me stay.. I will destroy The Continuum from the inside."
