Chapter 33 Trust No One
The safe house was a place. It smelled like a hospital and something metallic. Iris sat on the floor at 4:12 a.m. With a lot of blankets and pillows around her. Ten kids were sleeping after a night of crying and asking questions that no parent should ever have to answer. Elias had his arm around two of the kids. Three other kids were sleeping in a ball still on high alert. One little boy was curled up against another mans leg. Three babies were sleeping in a pod nearby.

Iris could not sleep. She was too scared. Every time she closed her eyes she saw people who wanted to hurt her. Her hand kept going to her stomach. She was not pregnant. She was scared of what might happen.

The man sitting next to her Lucien was hurt. He had a lot of scars and wounds. He did not want to take medicine because he wanted to feel everything. He wanted to be ready if the bad people came back.

A woman, Captain Reyes was walking around the room. She was checking the windows to make sure they were safe. Her leg was hurt,. She did not want to rest. "It is too quiet outside " she said. "That is what scares me."

Those words were very scary to everyone.

A doctor, Amara Soto was sitting at a desk with three computers. She was very tired. She was still working. Some other women, Sophia and Serena were taking turns sleeping and watching the kids. They had guns with them all the time. Another woman, Claire was holding one of the babies. She was very tired and scared.

Iriss father, Thomas Vale was sitting in a corner. He looked very old and tired. He was reading some files on a tablet. He had been hiding for a time but now he was ready to fight for his family.

Suddenly one of the kids woke up. Started crying. "They are dreaming again " she said. "The other kids like us. They are scared and angry." Another kid reached out. Took her hand. "I feel it too " she said. "They are fighting against the people who made them."

The kids were connected in a way that scared the adults. What if the bad people used that connection to hurt them?

Lucien stood up. He was in pain. "We cannot stay here " he said. "The bad people will come back. Hurt us. We need to split up and hide."

Iris did not want to split up. "We need to stay " she said. "Every time we split up something bad happens."

then a computer screen turned on. A man, Victor Lang appeared on the screen. He was smiling,. He was a bad person. " Morning " he said. "I have an offer. If you give me the kids I will destroy the machines that make more kids like them."

Then the screen showed another woman, Claire, who was tied up and hurt. "Do not give them anything " she said. "Save the kids. I love you Iris."

The screen turned off. The room was quiet for a moment. Then everyone started talking and yelling.

Lucien was very angry. "I will kill him " he said. Iris felt something inside her change. She was not scared anymore. She was angry and ready to fight.

The family made a plan to fight back. Some of them would launch a cyber attack on the peoples computers. Some would. Rescue Claire. Lucien, Iris and Thomas would take the kids to a place.

Just as they were about to leave the babies started crying. They were not crying like babies but like they were trying to communicate with each other. Their eyes were. They were reaching out to each other.

The doctors computers started beeping. "The babies are special " she said. "They are talking to each other and to something."

The computer screen turned on again. A young man appeared on the screen. He looked like Lucien and Iris. "Hello, Mother and Father " he said. "My name is Adam. I am one of the kids. I have been working against the people for four years. I have an army of people who want to help us.. There is a problem. One of you is not who you think you are. One of you is a fake."

Everyone was. Scared. They did not know who to trust.

Adam sent them a file with clues to find the person. The file said that the fake person still had a seed in their brain. They did not know they were a fake.

The family started to look for the person. They checked each others eyes and voices. They looked for any signs that someone was not who they said they were.

One of the kids pointed at Claire. "Auntie Claire is not right " she said. The Claire-person. Took one of the babies. "I have a message from Victor Lang " she said. "If you do not give us the kids I will hurt this baby."

The room was chaotic. Everyone was. Yelling. Lucien charged at the Claire. Iris was screaming. The kids were moving fast.

Then Thomas Vale clutched his head. "No not again " he said. His eyes. Another voice came out of his mouth. "My son, my daughter " she said. "Did you think I would die easily?"

The family was shocked. Thomas Vale was not who they thought he was. He was a fake.

Lucien had to make a choice. He had to choose between saving his wifes father or protecting the kids. He chose the kids.

As the sun started to rise the family got a message, from Adam. "I am coming to help you " he said. ". I am not alone. I have a key that can disable the bad machines.. It will also take away the kids special powers. Some of them might not survive."
