Chapter 31 Sleepless Nights
Chapter 31 Sleepless Nights
The safe house was supposed to be a place. Instead it felt like a pressure cooker. It was tucked in the Hudson Valley on fifty acres of wooded land. The land was registered under seven layers of companies. The sprawling modern compound should have felt secure. But with nine children three of them newborns, two exhausted doctors, an army of guards and the constant shadow of an immortal group hunting them for their bodies peace was a fantasy.
Iris stood at the nursery window at 3:17 a.m. She was rocking Violet against her chest while Rose and Lily slept in their bassinets. The triplets were miracles. Fragile, demanding and perfect. Violet’s small hand clutched Iris’s shirt. She already understood the world was trying to take her. Across the room Lucien sat in a rocking chair with Theo asleep on his lap. The six-year-old had finally allowed himself to trust his father. The sight of Lucien’s hand gently stroking his son’s dark hair made Iris’s throat tight with emotion.
“They should be sleeping through the night by now " she whispered. Exhaustion weighed on every syllable. "Instead we’re all running on fumes and fear.”
Lucien looked up. His storm-gray eyes were bloodshot but soft when they met hers. The stab wound in his side pulled with every movement.. He refused stronger painkillers. He wanted to stay sharp. "They’re alive Iris. All of them. That’s more than I dared hope for forty-eight hours ago.”
Hope, Aurora and Dawn had claimed the room next door. The three enhanced girls formed a sisterhood born from shared trauma. Elias had appointed himself protector of the ones. He was curled up on the couch in the living area with Lila and Noah. All three were wrapped in one blanket. Claire was recovering in the master suite. Her body was still healing from the triplets’ birth. Her heart ached for the sister she had only just found.
The human reality of their expanded family hit hardest in these hours. Nine children. Nine precious, terrified resilient hearts depending on them. Iris sometimes caught herself counting them loud. She was terrified one might vanish if she looked away.
A soft knock sounded. Captain Reyes entered, limping severely now but still moving with care. "The perimeter is clear for the moment. Sophia and Serena are monitoring the dark web feeds from the war room. There’s no chatter about The Continuum for three hours.. That silence feels worse than noise.”
Lucien gently laid Theo down beside Elias. He joined Iris at the window. He wrapped his arms around both her and Violet creating a cocoon of warmth. "We need rest. All of us. Tomorrow we start making plans. New identities, relocation options, long-term protection.”
Iris leaned into him breathing in his scent. After everything he still smelled like home. "I keep thinking about what Victor said. About the cloned bodies with our faces. What if they already succeeded with some of them? What if there are versions of us there right now doing their bidding?”
The thought had kept her awake every night since the revelation. Lucien’s grip tightened. "Then we’ll find them.. We’ll bring them home too. No one gets left behind. Not anymore.”
They put Violet down. Slipped into the master bedroom. The moment the door closed the weight of everything crashed down. Lucien pulled Iris into his arms. Kissed her. The kiss started desperate. Deepened into something slower more profound.
Clothes came off with trembling hands. Lucien laid her on the bed. Worshipped every inch of her body with his mouth and hands. He was memorizing her in case the world tried to steal her. When he finally slid inside her it was deep and slow. Their bodies moved together in exhausted rhythm. There were no words this time. Gasps, whispers of love and the sacred act of reaffirming they were still here still together still fighting.
Iris came first clinging to him as waves of pleasure mixed with tears. Lucien followed, burying his face in her neck. He held her like she was the real thing left in his world.
They fell asleep tangled together. Rest was short-lived.
At 5:42 a.m. the entire compound erupted with alarms.
Lucien was up instantly grabbing his gun. Iris pulled on clothes while Lucien checked on the children. Captain Reyes burst in. "There are drones overhead. Multiple signatures. They’re not attacking. They’re watching.. We just received a package at the outer gate.”
The package was a wooden box. Inside lay a single lock of hair tied with a pink ribbon and a note: Theo misses his real mother. Come get him before we finish what Victoria started.. The Continuum
Theo’s hair.
The boy had been asleep in the living room the time. When they checked he was still there.. A second lock of hair identical lay on his pillow.
They had taken samples and grown duplicates faster than anyone thought possible.
Elias woke up. Saw the hair. His young face hardened with fury. "They’re making copies of us. Like toys.”
The revelation spread through the house like wildfire. Aurora and Dawn immediately began scanning for tracking signals. Hope started crying saying the "loud voices" were back. The newborns woke up screaming in unison as if sensing the threat.
Dr. Amara under guard for her earlier betrayal offered the next devastating piece. "The Continuum has accelerated the program. They don’t need months anymore. They’ve perfected maturation chambers. The clones can be brought to consciousness in days, not years.”
Lucien’s protective rage boiled over. He slammed his fist into the wall cracking the plaster. "They want to replace us with versions they control. They want to erase our children’s souls and wear their bodies like suits.”
Iris gathered all the children close the older ones who tried to act strong. "We are not going to let them. You are not copies. You are real. You are ours.”
The next twist came through the secure line from Sophia in a secondary safe location.
“We just intercepted a transmission. Victor Lang isn’t working with The Continuum anymore. He’s fighting them. He has Claire’s location. Is offering to trade her and the location of the main maturation facility… in exchange for Lucien. He wants to put his consciousness into Lucien’s cloned body and use him as the new figurehead.”
The betrayals and shifting alliances made Iris dizzy. Everyone was a pawn. Everyone had their agenda.
As dawn broke the compound’s outer sensors detected movement. Not drones this time. Ground teams. Dozens of them. The Continuum had found them faster than expected.
Captain Reyes organized defenses while Lucien and Iris prepared the children for emergency evacuation. The plan was to split up. Some by road some by tunnels leading to a helipad two miles away.
In the chaos of packing emergency bags and comforting children a video call came through from an unknown secure source.
The screen showed a woman who looked like Iris. But older harder, with silver streaks in her hair. She sat in a clinical room holding a baby that looked identical to the triplets.
“Hello, daughter " the woman said softly. "I’m not Elena. I’m the original. The woman whose eggs and DNA started everything. Elena was my clone. I’ve been in hiding for thirty years.. This little one…" She kissed the baby’s head. "This is your child. A boy. Conceived naturally the night before the crash. They told you the pregnancy was lost. They lied.”
Ten children.
Iris dropped to her knees. Lucien caught her his face drained of color.
The woman. The Elena. Continued. "The Continuum is coming for all of you.. I have something they want more than the children. Me. If you can get to the coordinates I’m sending I will give myself up in exchange for your family’s safety. It’s the way.”
The call ended with coordinates and a final warning: They are already inside your walls.
Alarms blared again. This time the breach was internal.
One of the guards. A man who had been with them for years. Turned on the group eyes glowing with the unnatural light they had seen in Victoria. He grabbed Lila before anyone could react.
Lucien moved like lightning tackling the man and fighting hand-to-hand while Iris shielded the children. Aurora and Dawn joined the fray with efficiency. The guard was subdued,. Not before he revealed the final horrifying truth through Victoria’s stolen voice:
“Every single one of you has been implanted with dormant triggers. Even the newborns. At midnight tonight unless you surrender to The Continuum they will all activate, at once. Your entire family will turn on each other.. You will watch.”
