Chapter 90: The Fall Setup

Chapter 90: The Fall Setup
CHAPTER 90 – The Fall Setup

The first sign was not the headlines.

It was the silence.

Marcus felt it early in the morning, before his coffee cooled, before the sun fully rose above the glass towers outside his office. His phone sat on the desk, screen dark. No missed calls. No rushed emails marked urgent. No assistants knocking to ask for decisions that usually could not wait.

Silence like that was never peace.

It was a warning.

Marcus leaned back in his chair slowly, eyes narrowing as the stillness pressed in. He had lived too long inside boardrooms and negotiations not to recognize it.

Silence meant something was being prepared.

By mid-morning, the quiet cracked with accusations.

His legal assistant entered the room without knocking, her face tight, eyes strained. She placed a tablet on his desk without speaking.

Marcus looked down.

“ANONYMOUS TIP FLAGS SUSPICIOUS TRADING ACTIVITY.”

He scrolled.

More links appeared.

More alerts.

Regulators reviewing patterns. Analysts raising concerns. Financial bloggers suddenly discovering irregularities they had never noticed before.

Then the headline that mattered most appeared.

“MARCUS HOLDINGS UNDER INVESTIGATION

Marcus closed his eyes briefly.

So this was Victor’s move.

The legal team arrived within minutes. The conference room filled with tense bodies and muted voices. Charts glowed on the screen. Timelines were drawn. Transactions highlighted in red.

“These trades were not executed by you,” one lawyer said carefully. “But they were routed through a subsidiary under your authority.”

Marcus folded his arms. “Authority doesn’t mean I approved them.”

“No,” another lawyer replied, “but it creates responsibility.”

“Responsibility can be proven,” Marcus said evenly.

“Yes,” the lawyer agreed. “But damage happens faster than proof.”

Marcus looked at the screen again.

The pattern was clean. Too clean. Whoever built this knew exactly how to hide fingerprints while leaving shadows.

Victor hadn’t just attacked.

He had designed a fall for Marcus.

Bella.

Her phone vibrated once. Then again. Then didn’t stop.

She was reviewing a funding proposal when her assistant rushed in, face pale.

“Bella,” she said quietly. “It’s Marcus.”

Bella’s heart dropped.

She grabbed her phone and opened the news article.

Her chest tightened so sharply she had to sit down.

Marcus.

Under investigation.

The words blurred for a moment.

Her first reaction was disbelief.

Marcus was careful. Obsessive, even. He documented everything. He trusted systems, not shortcuts.

Her second reaction was anger, hot, immediate, shaking.

This wasn’t coincidence, this wasn’t discovery.

This was punishment.

She dialed his number before finishing the article.

“I know,” Marcus said the moment he answered.

Bella swallowed hard. “They’re framing you.”

“Yes.”

“For me,” she said, voice tight.

“No,” he corrected gently. “For standing where I chose to stand.”

Her eyes burned.

“What do you need?” she asked.

“I need you visible,” Marcus replied. “Calm. Grounded.”

“I don’t feel calm.”

“You will,” he said softly. “You always are when it matters.”

She pressed her lips together, fighting the urge to cry.

“I won’t let him destroy you,” she said.

Marcus didn’t answer immediately.

“Whatever happens,” he said finally, “don’t let him move you.”

The line went dead.

Bella sat there, phone still in her hand, feeling something sharp settle in her chest.

Victor had stopped negotiating.

Nathaniel did not wait for confirmation.

The moment the headlines broke, he knew this Victor doing.

Victor was telling them all the same thing, I can touch whoever I want.

Nathaniel stormed into his legal department, jacket still on, tie loose, eyes dark.

“I want an injunction filed now,” he said flatly. “Immediate challenge.”

One of the attorneys hesitated. “If this is federal.”

“Then we slow it,” Nathaniel snapped. “Procedure. Jurisdiction. Anything that buys time.”

Time mattered.

Because Victor didn’t need a conviction.

He needed damage.

By noon, regulators held a briefing.

Carefully worded. Noncommittal but dangerous.

At twelve-oh-three, one word slipped into the conversation.

Warrant not issued.

Prepared.

Pending.

Bella watched the broadcast from her office, hands clenched tight.

“They’re building this,” she said hoarsely.

Her assistant nodded nervously. “It’s too fast.”

“No one moves this fast unless they planned it,” Bella replied.

Her phone buzzed again.

Marcus’s name climbed trending lists.

Speculation hardened into judgment.

“He’s too clean.”

“Power always hides dirt.”

Bella felt something inside her snap.

She grabbed her coat.

Victor Hale watched the fallout with calm interest.

He sat comfortably, drink untouched, eyes focused on the screen where Marcus’s name scrolled endlessly.

“Predictable,” Victor said.

Elena stood nearby, arms crossed. “You’re pushing too hard.”

Victor smiled faintly. “No. I’m closing the circle.”

“You’re forcing reactions.”

“That’s how truth comes out,” he replied smoothly.

Elena studied him. “And if Bella doesn’t break?”

Victor’s smile sharpened. “Then we see who she can’t afford to lose.”

At 3:17pm, Nathaniel’s legal maneuver landed.

The warrant stalled.

Temporarily.

Nathaniel leaned forward, hands on his desk, breathing hard.

But relief didn’t come, because Victor never played a single move.

The knock came at Marcus’s office door just after five.

Three men entered, dark suits.

Badges.

The room shifted instantly.

“Mr Marcus?” the lead officer asked.

“Yes.”

“We have an order for your temporary detention pending investigation.”

Marcus stood slowly.

Bella arrived moments later, breathless, heart racing.

She saw them escorting him toward the elevator.

“Marcus!” she called.

He turned.

Their eyes met.

There was no fear in his gaze.

Only certainty.

“This isn’t the end,” he said calmly.

Her voice broke. “I know.”

Nathaniel arrived seconds too late.

He took in the scene in one glance.

“Where are you taking him?” he demanded.

“Procedural holding,” the officer replied. “No charges yet.”

Yet.

Marcus looked at Nathaniel.

“No more delays,” he said quietly. “Protect her.”

The elevator doors closed.

Bella stood frozen, breath shaking.

Nath
aniel felt something heavy settle in his chest.

Victor had crossed a line.

And this time, the cost would be high.

Victor received confirmation minutes later.

“Detained,” his aide said.

Victor leaned back slowly.

“Good,” he replied. “Now let’s see who breaks.”
