Chapter 24: Enter Cipher

Chapter 24: Enter Cipher

Rain lashed against the city like a warning, washing the neon colors into a smear of light. The storm had arrived early, rolling in on thunderclouds that mirrored the tension brewing within Alex Chen.

He stared at Felix, who was still catching his breath, damp from the run, nerves frayed.

"Start talking," Alex demanded. His voice was low, steady, but there was an edge to it now, the kind that came after too many upgrades and not enough sleep.

Felix swallowed hard. "Cipher isn’t like the others. She's not just augmented—she's... rewritten."

Eris, who had remained eerily quiet during Felix's outburst, stepped forward. Her synthetic eyes scanned him like a biometric reader.

"Define 'rewritten,'" she said.

Felix shifted, tugging nervously at the strap of his weather-stained satchel. "They used a corrupted variant of the Upgrade System on her. Unlike you, she doesn't resist the conditioning. She's a weapon, pure and loyal. No hesitation, no remorse."

Alex leaned against the wall, folding his arms. "And she's coming here?"

Felix nodded. "The message you intercepted? It was her way of letting you know. She likes the chase."

Eris turned to Alex. "We should relocate. Now."

But Alex shook his head. "No. If she wants a confrontation, we give her one—but on our terms."

By nightfall, the apartment had transformed into a digital fortress.

Eris deployed a series of cloaking drones outside the building, distorting thermal readings and blocking visual scans. Inside, Felix worked at a makeshift terminal, rerouting network traffic to mask their signal. Alex stood at the center of it all, watching, calculating.

Status: Neural Sync – 91%
Combat Efficiency – Enhanced
Cognitive Response – 3.9x

His thoughts moved like electricity, ideas linking and evolving in real time. But with every percentage gained, he felt a little more distant from his own body, from his emotions.

He didn’t flinch when Felix said, "She’s already in the district."

Eris looked up. "Estimated time?"

Felix frowned. "Fifteen minutes. Maybe less."

Alex cracked his knuckles. "Then we get ready."

Cipher moved like shadow.

She wore a sleek black bodysuit, no identifying marks. Her hair was tied in a precise braid, face emotionless, eyes glowing faintly violet—a side effect of the altered System. Her movements were fluid, silent, impossible to track by ordinary surveillance.

She walked straight through the shielded perimeter like it wasn't there.

Eris caught the breach first.

"We’ve been breached," she said flatly. "Cipher is inside."

Felix blanched. "How did she—?"

Alex was already moving.

He pulled the pistol from beneath his desk—custom-built, loaded with EMP-charged rounds—and nodded at Eris. "Keep Felix safe. If she gets through me..."

Eris held his gaze. "She won't."

The hallway lights flickered as Alex stepped out. The building was old, its bones creaking with every gust of wind. He moved quickly, boots silent, nerves like wire.

Halfway down the corridor, he saw her.

Cipher was standing at the far end, staring straight at him. No pretense. No hiding.

She smiled.

"Alex Chen," she said, her voice smooth, metallic. "You’ve grown."

Alex raised the gun. "You won’t leave this building."

She tilted her head. "Neither will you."

She moved first.

It was like fighting a phantom. She closed the distance in a blink, forcing Alex into immediate defense. He fired two rounds—she dodged both. The third clipped her shoulder, sparking a small arc of electricity, but she didn’t slow down.

She hit him hard.

The world spun as he crashed into the wall. He barely had time to roll as her blade-arm extended from her wrist, slicing through the air where his neck had been.

Adrenal Boost – Triggered
Pain Threshold – Suppressed

Alex retaliated with a sweeping kick that staggered her long enough for him to launch a neural spike—Eris’s custom override code—into her proximity sensors.

She blinked, momentarily stunned.

He fired again—three direct hits to the chest.

Cipher stumbled.

Then smiled again.

"You're learning," she said, before vanishing into a blur.

Inside the apartment, Felix was pacing.

"We have to help him," he said.

Eris didn’t respond. She was wired into the building’s control grid, rerouting power to key defensive lines. But even she knew it wouldn’t be enough.

Then the feed cut out.

"She took out the cameras," Eris said.

Felix grabbed a handheld stun gun. "I’m going."

"You’re not trained."

"Neither was he, once."

Alex ducked behind a steel doorframe as Cipher lunged again, her blade embedding into concrete. He triggered a floor trap—one of Eris’s inventions—a concussive shockwave that sent Cipher crashing into the ceiling.

She dropped, rebounded, and finally seemed... interested.

"You’re not like the others," she said.

"I’m not yours to control," Alex snapped.

Cipher’s smile faded. "Then I’ll erase you."

Felix arrived just in time to see her leap at Alex again. He didn’t think—just raised the stun gun and fired.

The jolt wasn’t enough to down her, but it stalled her long enough.

Alex moved fast, planting a pulse mine against her back.

It exploded.

Cipher screamed, the synthetic part of her system shorting for a few precious seconds. Alex seized the opportunity, slamming a neural inhibitor against her temple.

Her body jerked.

Then collapsed.

They stared at her body, both of them breathless.

Felix whispered, "Is she... dead?"

Eris arrived, scanning Cipher's body. "No. But her neural link is damaged. She won’t be operational for hours."

Alex stood over her, watching the light fade from her eyes.

Upgrade Available: Behavioral Override Protocol – Disabled Cipher

He dismissed the prompt.

"We're not like them," he said.

Eris nodded. "But we’ve just declared war."

Alex looked down at Cipher.

"Then let’s make sure we win."
