Chapter 37,,

Lucas

My alarm went off, and I immediately hit snooze. I was already awake for more than an hour already, I just lay in bed with no intention of leaving anytime soon. I noticed when Sophie got out of bed earlier, and I silently watched her get ready.

She doesn't work, so where was she headed this early? I waited till she did her final twirl in front of the mirror and her usual mirror pictures before I sat up on the bed.

"It's still very early, Sophie..." I started, and her face went sour. "Won't be bad if you spent the morning at least with your daughter before leaving. She barely sees you these days.." I said and got down from the bed. My voice had no expressions, and neither did my face hold any visible emotions.

I just wanted to hear what lies she had to tell this morning, and I was certain she wouldn't disappoint.

"Lucas..." Sophie moaned softly as she walked up to me and cupped my face. "I'd really love to, but I have something really important to do this morning, and it just can't wait.." she replied, and I stared at her blankly. I shrugged my shoulders and walked away from her.

"Have fun," I said and shut the door to the bathroom. I heard her muffle some words, but I made nothing out of anything she said. Her engine revved downstairs before I even finished having my bath, and I smiled inwardly.

"Being smart is clearly not one of your great possessions, Sophie.." I muttered as I dried my hair out and got ready to leave. Her car has a tracker, which she insisted we both install on our cars during the first year of our marriage.

What she doesn't know is that the tracker has been there all this time, and she clearly forgot about it because I never installed the follow-up app on her phone.

I got into my car and immediately called my assistant. "Meet me at Fourth Avenue. We have somewhere important to be." I said and put down the phone.

Looking at the tracker on my phone, I watched her drive through town and stop at a gift shop, and then towards Emily's address.

"Yeah, that's what I thought.." I thought to myself and hit the accelerator. I picked up my assistant, and we hit the road. I wasn't angered. All the rage I had piled up in my head had already vanished away.

"Go on and ask.." I grunted, and my assistant cleared his throat. I noticed how uncomfortable he was getting as I drove past the speed limit, but even after giving him the opportunity to ask whatever question was bothering him, he remained quiet.

We finally arrived at Emily's house and sure enough, her car was parked in the lot, but she covered the back with a car wrap just to make sure she doesn't get caught by someone who knows her.

"I see..." I said to myself and smiled. Voices rattled from inside the house, and I could hear Emily's distinct voice. It wasn't shaky anymore. As if she had gathered strength from all the pain she was enduring because the more I stood outside the door and listened, the prouder I became of how resilient she had become.

But if anything was to go south, it was an uneven fight between herself and then Jack and Sophie.

"Knock," I ordered my assistant, and he shook the door vigorously.

"Who's there?" A male voice thundered, and I gestured for my assistant to stop. The locks clicked, and Jack held the door open.

"Who are you?" He asked my assistant, who happened to be the first person he laid eyes on. He turned towards me, and his eyes froze.

"Move aside.." I ordered, but I could see hesitation in his eyes, but he eventually stepped aside for me to walk in.

Sophie froze. Our eyes locked, and an immediate flood of tears followed. Typical Sophie.

"Are you alright, Emily?" I asked, and Sophie's eyes darted towards Emily immediately.

"I'm alright, M... I mean, Lucas dear.." Emily responded and moved close to me.

"How do you two know each other?" Sophie growled, but I didn't give her a response.

"Get ready. We have somewhere important to be, " I said to Emily and nodded before rushing upstairs.

I sighed heavily and walked over to one of the sofas, sinking into it. Sophie fiddled with her fingers as she approached me, but my attention remained on my phone screen.

"Lucas, listen... this isn't what it looks like. I'm only here to help Jack talk to his wife. She's been cheating on him countlessly and he didn't know how else to make her change so he pleaded with me to help him and you know how I can be when it comes to helping my own friends out..." she explained, but I remained calm.

"Lucas, can you just listen to me?"

She eventually got tired of pouring water on stone, so she sat beside me and kick-started her emotional blackmail. Tears poured down her face, and she turned a bright red.

"You really don't even trust me, Lucas... you don't believe a word I say, and yet you–"

"I'm ready!" Emily announced, and I finally looked up from my phone. I smiled softly as she came down the stairs in a bright floral sundress. Her hair was held up halfway while the rest flowed down her slender shoulders.

The bruises on her face were more than evident, and I managed to control myself from removing all the teeth from Jack's mouth.

"Let's go.." I said and walked her out of the house.

"If you take one more step, Emily, you'll regret it!" Jack threatened, and Emily hastened her steps.

I paused and turned to Sophie. "I understand what it feels like to be away from someone you love. I can't do that to you because of who you are to me." Her eyes stopped producing fake tears, and she tried to close the distance between us, but I held out my hand for her to stop.

"The divorce papers will be finalized soon. You will soon be free to be with your lover." I dropped, and her eyes widened.
