Victory the darkness is gone!
Victory the darkness is gone!
Aria’s POV
The air in the cave is heavy and still, thick with the smell of blood, smoke, and burned shadows, and as I stand just behind Darius, watching the rise and fall of his chest as he holds his sword high, I know with every part of my being that this is the moment everything has been leading to, the moment every night of fear, every wound carried by our warriors, every desperate prayer whispered into the dark has brought us to, because here in the heart of this hollow mountain there is no turning back, no chance for retreat, only the end, and whether that end comes for us or for Lilith and Ethan depends on what we do in these final breaths.
Ethan already lies broken on the stone floor, his blood pooling beneath him, his breath shallow and ragged as the last of his strength seeps away, his eyes filled not with defiance anymore but with a hollow regret, though even now I cannot tell if he regrets the choices he made or only the simple truth that he lost. Yet it is not him my gaze lingers on, not his body trembling with the nearness of death, but Lilith, who still stands, her hands clutching the Heart of Hades as if it is the last thing keeping her upright, her body swaying but her voice still sharp as she screams, pouring the last fragments of her darkness into the air, calling forth shadows that are already shrinking, already recoiling from the light that clings stubbornly to these stone walls.
Darius does not falter, his sword raised high, his shoulders squared, his stance rooted as though he is carved into the very ground, but I can see the way Lilith’s shadows still cling to her, thick as tar, wrapping around her body, shielding her chest, and I know even his strength will not be enough to cut through them, because darkness does not fear steel, darkness only fears light, and in that instant, I understand what must be done, what only I can do.
I take a step forward, my body aching, my soul weary from all that has already been given, yet as I move, I feel the bond between Darius and me flare with life, golden and fierce, pulling at me like a tide, reminding me that I was never meant to stand apart from him, that our strength is not divided but one, and when his eyes flicker toward me in that breathless silence, I see that he knows it too. He does not need to ask. I do not need to explain.
I lift my hands, and the light rises inside me, not in small sparks or fleeting glimmers, but in a wave so vast it feels as though the very air cannot contain it, a flood pouring from every corner of my soul, from every memory of those we lost, every promise I made to protect, every hope of a world no longer haunted by Lilith’s shadow. It burns through me until my lungs feel aflame, until my heartbeat is no longer mine but the heartbeat of something far greater, and with a cry, I send it into him, into Darius, into the blade he holds like an extension of his very spirit.
The sword bursts into radiance, golden light wrapping around its steel, pouring from the edge like fire given shape, chasing the shadows back from the stones, scattering them into nothing, searing away the creatures that still clung stubbornly to the corners of the cavern. The glow is so bright it hurts to look at, yet I do not look away, because in that light Darius does not look like a warrior alone, he looks like the will of the Moon herself, a weapon forged not in iron but in love, in trust, in the unshakable bond that binds us.
Lilith staggers, her face contorting, her eyes widening with something I have never seen in her before — fear. She thrusts her arms outward, and from her palms pour the last strands of her darkness, desperate tendrils of black fire lashing toward us, but they break apart before they can even reach him, dissolving the instant they touch the brilliance wrapped around his sword. The sound of her scream is piercing, rattling the stone, trembling through my bones, yet it is not the sound of triumph or rage anymore, but the sound of a woman who finally understands she has lost.
“Darius,” I whisper, though my voice carries like a vow in the silence between us, “end it.”
He does not hesitate. With a roar that shakes the cavern like thunder, he drives the sword forward, the light blazing so fiercely that for an instant I cannot tell where his strength ends and mine begins, because it is both of us, together, pouring everything we are into that final strike. The blade pierces straight through the veil of shadows, through the Heart of Hades pressed against Lilith’s chest, and there is an explosion of sound and light as darkness collides with radiance, a blinding eruption that swallows the cavern whole. For a heartbeat, there is nothing but the glow, a light so pure it feels like it is remaking the world, and then, slowly, it fades.
When my vision clears, I see her crumpled form on the ground, her fingers twitching weakly as if she still tries to hold onto something, her lips parting in a whisper that never leaves her throat, her body trembling as the shadows flee her for the last time. The Heart of Hades shatters, shards scattering across the stone like pieces of broken glass, and then they vanish into the cracks, leaving no trace, no power, no hope for her to cling to. Her body stiffens, her eyes glaze, and then she lies still, her face frozen in disbelief, her darkness gone forever. The cavern exhales. The air clears. The silence that follows is not heavy anymore but freeing, a silence that feels like dawn after endless night.
My knees weaken, the drain of pouring so much of my light into Darius leaving me trembling, yet before I can stumble, he is there, his arm around me, holding me steady, grounding me against his chest. His sword is still warm with the glow of my power, but it is fading now, dimming until it is only steel again, though in my heart I know it will never be only steel, not after this night, not after it carried the strike that ended the darkness.
Around us, the warriors lift their heads, their breaths ragged, their eyes wide with the same realization that floods through me: it is over. Truly over. The shadows are gone, the creatures are nothing but smoke, Ethan lies unmoving, Lilith lies cold, and the weight we have carried for so long has finally fallen away. I lean into Darius, my hand pressed against the steady beat of his heart, and when his eyes meet mine in the dim glow of the cavern, I see the truth reflected there, the same truth that echoes in my chest: we fought, we endured, we bled, and we did not fall. We are alive. We are together. And the darkness has been silenced. For the first time in so long, I let myself breathe. The air tastes like victory.
