Light and Darkness clash.
Light and Darkness clash.
Aria’s POV
The battlefield is chaos, and all I can hear is the sound of steel clashing and wolves howling, the ground shaking under the weight of so many bodies fighting, but my focus is pulled again and again to the place where Darius and Ethan are locked in their deadly dance. I should keep my attention on the shield I am holding with Florence and the witches, because Lilith’s shadows are crawling like snakes across the walls and reaching for the Lycans, but my heart will not let me look away from Darius for long, because every time Ethan’s blade strikes his body I feel the echo of that pain deep inside me, and I know that if he falls, all of this will be over.
Florence stands next to me, her voice strong as she chants the words that hold our protection together, and the other witches form a circle with her, their hands raised, their eyes glowing, silver threads of light streaming from their fingers and weaving into the barrier that pushes against the darkness. The air whispers with the power of it, and my own light burns from my hands, golden and steady, but every wave of Lilith’s power slams against us like a storm, and I can feel my arms shaking, my breath catching, as if the shadows are trying to drag me into the dark with them.
Lilith herself stands just beyond the gate, her eyes glowing with cruel fire, her body wrapped in smoke that moves as if it is alive, and at her chest, the stone pulses, that cursed Heart of Hades, each beat stronger than the last. Every time it glows, another rush of blackness sweeps toward us, crawling along the ground, spilling into the air, searching for cracks in our light. She is more powerful than I have ever seen, but she is also furious, because we have not broken, and that fury pours out of her in a laugh that makes my blood run cold.
“You shine, little Queen, but flames always die. You cannot hold forever, and when you fall, when your light fades, I will take what you love most. I will rip your King from your hands, and you will watch him kneel before me,” Lilith calls out.
Her words stab through me like knives, and for a heartbeat, my knees weaken, because she is right about one thing: I feel every strike Ethan lands on Darius, every wound tearing into me as if it is my own. My bond to him is so strong that I cannot shut it out, and sometimes it feels like I am standing in the fight with him, bleeding when he bleeds, gasping when he is struck. For one terrible moment, I see it in my mind, clear as day: Ethan’s blade piercing his chest, Darius falling to the ground, his blood pouring across the stone. The image nearly crushes me. But I force the fear down. I drag air into my lungs, lift my shaking hands higher, and push more light into the shield, because if I fail, he will die.
“You will never have him, Lilith! You will never have us!” I shout, my voice rough with emotion.
The bond burns hot inside me, not a leash but a lifeline, not weakness but strength. I let it guide me, fill me, strengthen me, until my light blazes brighter. It spills across the battlefield like a wave of fire, golden and steady, crashing into the crawling dark and tearing holes through it. The Lycans who had started to waver lift their heads, their eyes glowing brighter, their snarls rising again, and they throw themselves at the enemy with new fury, claws ripping, teeth tearing, fighting with the strength of wolves who know their Queen still stands with them. Florence’s chanting grows louder beside me, her silver hair whipping in the wind, her face pale with strain, but her voice never faltering.
“Do not weaken, Aria!” she yells. “Stand firm! Darius needs you!” Florence shouts.
Her words steady me, but it is Darius who keeps me rooted, Darius who holds me up when my own body trembles. I see him in the chaos, his sword flashing again and again, every strike hard and certain, his movements slower now from wounds but never weak, never breaking. Ethan presses him with madness, his strikes wild, his roars shaking the ground, his obsession spilling out of every swing, but Darius holds.
My chest aches with pride, but also with fear, because Ethan lands a strike, his claws raking deep across Darius’s side, and I feel the tearing pain like it is my own. My legs buckle, my light flickers, and for one terrifying moment, the shadows surge through the crack, reaching for the Lycans behind the shield. I scream and shove back with everything in me, pouring my soul into the glow, until golden fire bursts from me like sunlight breaking through storm clouds. The darkness shrieks as it burns away, and the warriors howl with it, their courage blazing again.
Lilith’s face twists in rage, the shadows writhing around her as the Heart glows brighter. She screams a sound that rattles the stone beneath us, and the earth itself shudders as she throws her power against us. The witches cry out, sweat running down their faces, some staggering, but they do not let go, they do not give in. Their silver threads hold, tangled with mine, the barrier groaning but unbroken.
“I will not break,” I whisper, my voice shaking but firm, and I push harder.
The bond surges again, hot and sure, and I can feel Darius through it, his rage, his strength, his vow that he will not fall. I take it into myself and let it fuel me. My light grows brighter and brighter, gold so fierce it almost turns white, and when it slams into Lilith’s black tide, the air itself shakes, the walls groan, the ground splits with the force of it. For a moment, everything holds still. The shadows freeze, the witches pause in their chant, even the warriors seem to falter in their strikes, because the clash between my light and her darkness is so strong it feels like the whole world is waiting to see which will win. In that stillness, my eyes find Darius again.
He and Ethan are locked in place, blades grinding against each other, their roars filling the night. Sparks fly around them like falling stars, their muscles straining, their wills clashing as fiercely as their swords. Ethan’s face is twisted with rage, his obsession burning wild, while Darius’s eyes are steady, fierce, promising he will never bow. My chest seizes, my bond pulse so hard it hurts, and I know this fight is not only about the crown or the throne or the kingdom, it is about us, about everything we are and everything we refuse to give up. The world erupts around us again, shadows screaming, light blazing, steel clashing, and still my eyes do not leave him. Darius and Ethan have finally met again, and nothing will pull them apart until one of them falls.
