Chapter 30
Author POV
Knoxville's determination drove him to seek out Electra, and Henry obligingly chauffeured him to her company. As they arrived, Knoxville parked his car in the garage and stepped out, Henry following closely behind.
Knoxville's heart raced as he pushed through the revolving door, Henry at his side.
Upon entering, they were greeted by the receptionist's warm smile. "Welcome, gentlemen. How may I assist you?"
"I'm here to see Electra," Knoxville announced, his voice firm.
The receptionist's expression turned apologetic. "I'm afraid she's currently in a meeting with her team. Would you mind waiting?"
Knoxville nodded curtly, and they made their way to the waiting room. Plush leather sofas and polished wood accents enveloped them in comfort.
As they sat, Henry turned to Knoxville, concern etched on his face. "Are you sure she's not going to be upset seeing you here?"
Knoxville scoffed, his jaw set. "I have to face her, no matter what. This can't be avoided."
Henry raised an eyebrow. "And you think she'll listen to you and break up with Maxwell?"
Knoxville's eyes burned with conviction. "I'll make her understand. She deserves better than someone like Maxwell."
Henry's expression remained skeptical, but he said no more.
The waiting room's silence grew, punctuated only by the soft hum of the air conditioning and Knoxville's racing thoughts.
Finally, the receptionist reappeared. "Electra will see you now."
Knoxville stood, his heart pounding in anticipation. This was it – his chance to reclaim Electra's heart.
With a deep breath, he strode toward Electra's office, Henry following closely behind, offering silent support.
"I think you should wait out," Knoxville said to Henry, his voice low.
Henry nodded in understanding and took a seat in the waiting room.
Knoxville took a deep breath, steeling himself, and pushed open the door to Electra's office.
"Welcome, sir. I'm sorry for keeping you waiting," Electra said, her voice professional.
As she looked up from the files on her desk, her eyes widened in surprise.
Knoxville's presence seemed to catch her off guard.
Electra stood, her movements fluid, her expression swiftly shifting to anger.
"What are you looking for?" she demanded, her voice icy.
Knoxville stepped forward, his hands open in a calming gesture.
"Electra, please calm down. Let's talk," he urged.
Electra's eyes flashed, her jaw clenched.
"About what?" she asked, her tone biting.
Knoxville took another deep breath, his heart pounding.
"About us," he replied, his voice firm.
The air hung heavy with tension.
Electra's gaze narrowed, her anger palpable, radiating like heat from her piercing stare.
"Point of correction, Knoxville," she said, her voice icy and deliberate. "There's no us, nothing like us."
Knoxville's face contorted in pain, his eyes pleading.
"What about what we shared?" he asked, his voice cracking.
Electra burst into laughter, its sound cold and mirthless.
"You always seem to amaze me, Knoxville," she said, her chuckle dripping with sarcasm.
"What did we share?" she repeated.
Her expression turned glacial.
"Everything we shared died off five years ago," she declared.
Her words sliced through the air like a dagger.
"The moment you divorced me and cheated on me with my friend," she stated.
Each word cut deeper.
Electra's eyes flashed.
"You shattered my trust, Knoxville. You destroyed me despite trusting you so much."
"I am sorry, Electra. I am sorry for breaking you," Knoxville pleaded, his voice laced with desperation.
Electra's eyes flashed, her anger reigniting. "I don't want your apology, Knoxville," she spat.
Her voice trembled. "And I don't want to hear any of your excuses. It's obvious what you did. You cheated on me, took everything from me, and left me on the streets in the dead of night."
Electra struggled to calm her racing nerves. "You must think me foolish, that I'd forgive you just like that and let go of everything," she scoffed.
Her gaze turned icy. "All I want now is to see you in pain," Electra declared.
Knoxville's face contorted. "Is that why you're dating my half-brother?" he asked.
Electra's smirk was a razor-sharp slice of sarcasm. "Maybe," she drawled.
Her eyes glinted. "Maxwell makes me happy. He's everything you're not."
Knoxville's eyes narrowed. "You're using him to hurt me," he accused.
Electra's smile grew. "Perhaps," she admitted.
"You know how fate has a way of doing things," Electra said.
She settled into her chair. Her eyes never left Knoxville's. "Perhaps you're surprised, or maybe you knew how I met Maxwell," she mused.
A sly smirk played on her lips. "But one thing is certain: this world works according to fate."
Electra's voice dripped with conviction. "Everything seems like a coincidence, but I've come to realize that it's all interconnected."
Her gaze pierced Knoxville's. "And I must say, I'm enjoying the twist of fate that brought Maxwell into my life."
Electra's smirk deepened. "Especially since it's a constant reminder of what you lost."
Knoxville's eyes flashed. A mix of pain and regret.
Electra's eyes sparkled. "Fate has a way of righting wrongs."
"But two wrongs never make a right," Knoxville said, his voice laced with conviction.
Electra's laughter was icy. "Look who's preaching to me," she sneered. "Just admit you're disappointed I'm not broken, like the way you left me."
Knoxville's face contorted in pain. "I've always wished you happiness, Electra. I searched for you after that night."
Electra's expression hardened. "Who told you I'd take you back? You're the last person I want to have anything to do with again."
Knoxville's eyes burned. "You don't know, Electra. Maxwell is worse."
Electra's smile twisted. "I expected you to say that. People like you know nothing but ruining others' reputations."
Knoxville's jaw clenched. "You're blind to the truth."
Electra stood, her voice cold. "You can leave now."
"Please, Electra, can you just listen to me?" Knoxville asked, his tone calm and pleading.
Electra's expression remained resolute. "I said get out of here," she repeated firmly.
Her voice left no room for argument. "You're my past, and I refuse to go back to it. Understand?" she declared.
Her eyes flashed with determi
nation. Knoxville's face fell, but he nodded slowly.
With a heavy heart, he turned and walked out of her office, the door closing firmly behind him.
