Chapter 45 Chapter 45
Selena
I should just ignore him and go straight inside, but knowing Noah, he would do anything to follow me inside. So with my hands to my side, I walked to him, standing in front of him.
Making peace was better. I nodded internally.
“I don't know what you want or why you are here, but I had a crazy day today, and I really need to rest. So, let’s get over why you came here.” I spoke, staring deeply at him. Hoping I had come off a little intimidating.
He leaned forward, his once crossed legs balancing on the floor as he stared back at me.
“I have so many questions to ask, but there is one that is really bothering me.” He rubbed his hair back, his gaze narrowing.
Noah was trying to be cold. I could see it in the way his eyes turned icy. He was hiding his feelings of wanting to lash out at me. Maybe yell.
I waited, not saying anything.
“What are you to Theodore? Why was he so all over you?”
I sighed deeply. “I don't think you are in the right place to ask that, but if you really want to know….He is my boyfriend. So we are good?”
I waited. Waited because he would be running after me when I turned to leave.
I should be happy for the look in his eyes. The glam of betrayal that he held in his eyes, the way his hands clenched into a fist.
I should be happy, but why does it actually hurt? Why does my heart still feel pain for him? I had gotten jealous at the party seeing other women with him. Even getting drunk, and leaving myself vulnerable to Theodore.
My heart still wants him.
“Are you serious, Selena? That’s Theodore we are talking about. If my father is evil, then Theodore was a master with a cuff to my father’s neck. He is cruel. You know that.” He raised his voice, Frustration breaking his facade.
I scoffed. “So what if he is powerful? Everyone craves power, don't we?”
“What?”His eyes flashed in disbelief.
“Yes. You crave power too. That's why you joined your father’s company. So what’s wrong with me for looking for someone like him? You aren't better.” I was getting pissed now. How dare he lecture me?
He took a step closer and I moved back. “You know I don't crave for power. You know I hate it, and I will always hate anyone oppressive. I only went back because I want you back, and this’s the best protection I can give you.”
I scoffed. What a liar.
He had also joined the company just to get hold of me by asking Theodore. How was he different?
“Who am I being protected from?” I asked and that question seemed to throw him over the edge.
I took a step closer to him, but now, my emotions were building up, and my attempt to contain them was faltering.
I stopped in front of him and hit his chest with my fingers. “It was fine if everything was cruel.” Like a river, memories of us flowed in my head. “Because I had you. I could always fall back to you even if everything goes wrong, but what did you do?”
Fuck, I was a bullshit, allowing tears to fall down my cheeks with him standing in front of me.
He stepped forward, wanting to touch my face, but I took a step back.
“You can't protect me anymore. You don't have the right to condemn Theodore when you aren't better. I’m choosing Theodore because he has the upper hand, and he likes me, and can give me everything I want.” I turned, backing him before cleaning my eyes.
“And during the party, you could see I could wear whatever I liked.”
Yeah, that was to tick him off.
“Your body was exposed, Selena. You aren't that way.”
I laughed. I laughed loudly, throwing my head back. “I’m not the naive Selena anymore. One who had let you cheat under her nose. I can do whatever I want and it isn't your business.” I turned back to him, locking our gaze, then I glared before turning back to head inside the building.
I expected him to follow me, but he didn't. Even when I was inside the elevator, I expected it to open to see him standing in front, but it didn't.
My words must have gotten to him.
I breathe slowly, placing my hands on the couch, leaning on it as I get inside my apartment.
I needed to forget about Noah from now on. I could take anything, but I couldn't take cheating, not from anyone.
My phone beeped and I took it out of my pocket and then swiped the screen.
It was the lady again.
–You were able to get close to even reach his room, that’s impressive, so you won’t be held responsible for failing to bring the document.”
A smile crept on my face at that but it was soon replaced.
“Get closer to Theo, Selena. Not only as an assistant, but as a woman. Since he wants you then you should let him. That way your mission can get to an end earlier, maybe two months shorter, and then you’ll have whatever you want.”
Go closer to Theodore?
I frowned. I was already in trouble for speaking rudely to him. There was a sure fired letter, already sitting at my office table, waiting for me to come in tomorrow.
I placed my hand on my head. It was pounding badly and I wanted nothing more than to rest.
What I was expecting was a sacking letter presented at my desk, but what I wasn't expecting was books sent to my table with instructions to study them as an assistant to the boss.
wanting to know the sender, I had messaged Anastasia as she was the only one with access to my office after Theodore.
And to my pleasure, she told me about the boss's schedule. Theodore was moving to another country for work soon and I was leaving with him.
But I couldn't understand why I wasn't fired.
I should be.
Though I was relieved, I couldn't help but be bothered.
Now the foreign language books are in my hands as I walk down the hall. I don't know how I was going to study it, but I had to do it soon.
I have to do everything to stay longer on Theodore’s side for the mission. Though he had allowed me to stay, I doubt our fake pretense of dating each other still exists.
Deep in thought, I failed to watch where I was going and the next thing I knew, my shoulder bumped into another and I groaned in pain, the books in my hands falling.
“It's hurt,” I muttered, bending down to pick the book, but looking up to see who I had bumped into, my breath caught in horror.
Valeria.
Her full face was red with bruises.
“Oh my God, what happened to you?” I asked, my eyes widened, my hands stretching to her face.
But instead of the usual bravery Valeria has always shown, she backed out, fear in her eyes as she looked at me.
“Sorry for bumping into you, I wasn't looking straight. I’ll take my leave now.”
