Chapter 42 Chapter 42
Selena
“Of course not.” I lied, trying not to look them in the eye to avoid appearing suspicious.
There were so many people that I needed to protect. Reporting Theodore directly would only bring home to me.
Smith nodded.
“We are going to move around to wait for Mr Rashford to wake up.”
I nodded. “Alright, thank you.” With that, they left.
I balled my hands into fists. It could only be Theodore. It has to be.
It was too cruel. How could he do that? He could harm anyone, but not Grandfather Rashford who only had Martin.
It was his building, so he shouldn't have to go through this because of his refusal. It was oppression.
I turned to look at Martin, but he was already staring at me, his eyes worried. Right now, I wanted nothing more than to confront Theodore, but I couldn't leave Martin by himself.
I walked back to Martin who was now looking at the door.
“It's fine. Godfather should be out soon, then you’ll spend time with him and everything will be fine.”Ireassured, rubbing his hair.
He nodded, but I could see the doubt in his eyes. He didn't have to go through this.
“Let me have my phone?” I asked, giving him the space to decide. He nodded and handed the phone over.
I took my phone and dialed Halley’s number. It ranged from the first to the second time.
“Girl! Josh said you spent the night out, don't tell me you took my advice and slept with your boss.” She yelled.
I closed my eyes, opening it with a sigh. “I did sleep at his place but didn't sleep with him. I need your help.”
The line grew silent and then, “What happened? Are you good?”
Her asking the questions so worriedly gave me a flash of deja vu.
Things weren't always as stable as they are now. In the past, I had called Halley in a pool of my blood, but things changed after I met Noah.
I shook my head not to think deeply of it.
In the next few minutes, I spent explaining everything to her while she got dressed to come take care of Martin. I ended the call.
“Are you leaving?” I looked down at Martin.
“I’m not leaving, but I need to go somewhere. My friend would take care of you while I go. I just need to sort out something?”
He didn't look convinced and I understood him.
“I promise I will be back. My bestfriend Halley would be here and you don't have to worry. She is nice.”
He nodded this time and we went back to sit on the chair, my hands holding his.
Soon Halley came rushing in.
“Girl, I doubt I’ll be finding you easily, I was about to call.” She held a bag with her.
I had asked her to shop for clothes and food.
Martin fixed his eyes on her as I stood to welcome her.
“I’ve spoken to Martin already, so I’ll be leaving now.” I needed to speak to Theodore. Each minute that passed made me angrier.
Halley nodded, dropping the bag on the chair. I looked at Martin and he nodded.
With a smile, I walked out of the hospital, calling a cab immediately.
I had checked. Before leaving Theodore’s place in the car, I had checked my location on the map.
The place has been so desolate that it has piqued my curiosity making me wonder where I was. Thanks to my memories I could recall something from the address.
I typed the address on the map and it brought up exactly that.
Soon, the cab stopped in front of me and I handed him my phone for the location.
The journey was filled with uncertainty, anger, and worries. Each minute I clenched my fingers, my legs tapping on the car floor, and finally, the car stopped in front of the penthouse.
I took a deep breath looking at the place, then I pressed the bell.
Immediately, the door beeped open.
How did the door recognise me so easily to open up? Or was Theodore expecting me to be back here because of what he did?
I scoffed, walking inside the living room.
But Theodore was on the stairs, his phone in his hands, his eyes gazing at me like he was expecting me to be here.
Why?
My eyes traced to his phone in his hands.
He must be receiving the good news that the operation was successful.
“What are you doing here, Selena? You bolted out of here earlier like your legs were on fire.” He came down, his green eyes lazy as always as he walked to stop in front of me.
I clenched my hands in a fist and opened my mouth. Anger was surging out with each second that passed. “You didn't have to leave him in that condition. Using such a brutal method to get what you want is oppressing and it isn't right. Martin only has his grandfather, how could you harm him?” I questioned, anger buzzing at my nail tips. But instead of answering me Theodore turned, walking to the coffee maker.
“Is that why you came back?”
“What?”
Now I’m dumbfounded. How can he act that way, making coffee when lives are at stake? I walked closer to him, my face red from anger.
It was so unfair.
“How can you be so emotionless? Someone is battling for their life for something they own. What makes you think you can do that?” I yelled, my voice shocking from the tears blurring my eyes. I bit my lip trying to keep it back in.
What makes them think they had control over the less privileged?
“You have more resources to get new places, new buildings. Why did you have to do that!” My eyes flared and then he stopped his movement.
slowly his face turned to look at me, and for a second, just for a second my breath caught but I didn't stop, I couldn't.
“Why are you so cruel? You are human too. Just because you are untouchable doesn't give you the right to harm others. Why is it so easy for you to kill and destroy others? How can you be so cruel?”
Maybe my eyes have gone blurry, because the next thing I heard was steps approaching and then he was in front of me.
Before I could think, my neck was held in a tight grip and I dragged up, my legs swinging, finding the floor.
