Chapter 41 Chapter 41

Chapter 41 Chapter 41
Selena

“I’m looking for a patient named Rashford. He has a grandson named Martin, they were rushed here a while ago.” I spoke hurriedly to the nurse at the reception.

She nodded checking her system and I looked around, seeing if I could get a sense of Martin.

“Mr Rashford is in surgery, his grandson must be at the front of the door waiting. Go right.”

“Thank you,” I muttered, running off to the right, my step heavy on the floor.

“Martin,” I called out as I sighted him sitting on the long iron bench looking at the door that flashed ‘in operation’ on its front.

He turned to me, and I could see the relief that washed over his face, but his face soon morphed into tears. I walked faster to him.

“Come here,” I knelt, hugging him to my shoulders.

His cries echoed in the hall, and his shoulder shook.

I let him cry out the pain, my hand patting his back softly—gently as I hugged him tighter.

“It’s okay. It’s okay. Everything will be fine. It’s okay.” I spoke like a mantra. He was heartbroken, and my heart ached seeing him like that.

I rubbed his head softly, allowing him to grip the fabric of my clothes in his fist, my eyes on the operation door. I

Just what happened to Mr Rashford?

Was he attacked? What did Martin see? I would have to ask him later when he is stable.

My legs started to hurt from kneeling, but I could only grit my teeth tightly, giving space for him to pour everything out.

Slowly, his breath lowered and gentle hiccups followed, warming my heart.

“It’s fine Martin. ‘I’m here now. Grandfather would be fine.” I rubbed his head gently.

He was such a strong boy. Not breaking down till I came.

Slowly, he moved away from me to look at me. I pursed my lips at his red eyes, before looking at his clothes.

Anger filled my heart instantly.

His clothes were covered in blood. How could the cops let him stay like that? They should have gotten him clothes or something.

Martin looked at his shirt, maybe because of me staring at it, and he moved back, away from me. his hands leaving mine… I grabbed hold of them back and brought him closer.

“It’s okay. I don’t mind it, I promise. I will get new clothes for you soon, so just hold on.” He nodded, and I forced a smile at him, to assure him.

I wanted to know everything that happened, but asking him would only make him remember everything. I’ll have to exercise patience and ask later.

Two cops started walking towards us, and I stood up, gently pushing Martin behind me to face them.

“Hi, I’m Mr Smith, the inspector in charge of the case, and this’s Mr Santiago, my colleague,” He introduced his friend.

“And you are…?” The blonde one—Mr Smith asked, his eyes latching onto me like I was a threat.

I took his hand in a shake. “Call me Selena.” I took my hand back, and he nodded.

“Selena, from my understanding Mr Rashford doesn't have any other relatives apart from Martin, so who are you?”

“Uh….” I opened my mouth and closed it.

Who was I? How could I describe myself? I couldn’t say I was from T&M and had met Mr Rashford concerning the building now.

Being from T&M alone had automatically put me at the bad end. They will separate me from Martin, seeing me as a threat.

“She is my aunt. Grandpa knows her and asked that I call her if anything happened to him.” Martin moved out from behind me, his tone sharp as he looked at them.

I sighed heavily, not even realizing I was holding my breath.

“Oh,” they both nodded, now confirming my identity.

“Because Rashford is still being operated on, and it might take some time. Hopefully it turns out to be good.”

I wanted to roll my eyes. Can’t he just shut up and be sensitive about his words? Martin was here and he was a child for Christ's sake.

I held Martin’s head and brought him closer to me.

“Can I speak to you for a second?” I asked them. I needed to know what happened, even just a tiny bit. Smith nodded, and I turned to Martin.

“Here,” I gave him my phone. “I’m going to speak to him over there. Then when I am back, you’ll change and eat, and then wait for grandpa okay?” His eyes grew teary, but he nodded and I ruffled his hair with a smile.

I allowed him to sit before leaving with the cops.

We walked a good distance and stopped. Martin could still see us, but he won’t be able to hear us.

“Please can you tell me what happened?” I asked.

They looked at each other.

“Since the child knows you. Then you are the only relative right now.” The other spoke and I nodded.

“We are still waiting for Mr Rashford to tell us what really happened. But he was found in a pool of blood in his room. According to Martin and a neighbor, Grandpa has been visited by someone with documents. Martin’s also called them bad people.”

I turned to look at Martin whose eyes were in the operating room.

“Since there is no CCTV around, it will be hard to get anyone. We are only hoping that he wakes up soon. Plus there wasn’t an object of assault in the scene.”

It couldn’t be right? It couldn’t be Theodore's handiwork.

He couldn’t have really asked for him to be killed, but it seemed possible. That was his fortress, and there was no other person after the building except him.

He had taken the project from me, wanting to use a cruel way to solve it. Who had he sent? Valeria? One of his men?

He must have decided to use a more brutal approach seeing that Mr Rashford wasn’t compelling. But how could he be so cruel? He didn’t even care about the child.

My hands clenched into fists, my teeth biting into my lips. I tasted blood.

“Do you know anyone that have ill intentions towards him?”

I looked up at the cop.

“I…..I.” I opened and closed my mouth.
